Abstract: during 19th century and the beginning of the following century, minas gerais was the most important sugarcane plantation area in brazil. in the 1830's, there were 4.150 productive unities working with sugarcane transformation in minas. the sum of all sugar mills in the northeast coast, north of rio de janeiro and the plains of s?o paulo did not reach half of the number of sugar mills in minas gerais. in the same period, it is estimated that 85.000 captives was employed in the fabrication of sugar and of aguardente. that such a large contingent had neither been employed in any other sugarcane plantation area nor in any other period of brazilian slavery history. furthermore, it is estimated that in the 1830's minas gerais produced 33.200 tons of sugar. the sugar production of s?o paulo did not surpass 8.500 tons, and the production of pernambuco was 27.000. the sugar exportation of bahia was not more than 30.000 tons and the amount exported by rio de janeiro did not reach 17.000.

Abstract: This article pretends to understand the degree of participation of the municipal council of Rio de Janeiro, the main local power agency, in the discussion and design of proposals for the question of urban popular housing throughout the period of 1892 to 1902. The reflections on this subject are threefold. First, the key for understanding is a survey on scientific contributions from historians and other researchers, since 1980, on the question of urban popular housing in a kind of historiographic balance. The second and third moment are complementary and try to describe the existing negotiations and discussions between the Council members at the moment when legislative projects on corti os and the construction of workers' vilas were discussed.

Ribeiro, Liany Barros;Magalhes, Vera;Magalhes, Marcelo;
Jornal Brasileiro de Pneumologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-37132012000600009
Abstract: objective: to determine primary and acquired resistance to pyrazinamide in mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated in sputum samples from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. methods: this was a prospective, descriptive study conducted between april and november of 2011 at a referral hospital for tuberculosis in the city of recife, brazil. cultures, drug sensitivity tests, and tests of pyrazinamidase activity were conducted in a private laboratory in recife. results: of the 71 patients included in the study, 37 were treatment-na?ve and 34 represented cases of retreatment. pyrazinamide-resistant strains were isolated in 14 (41.2%) of the 34 patients who had previously been treated for tuberculosis and in none of the 37 treatment-na?ve patients. of the 14 isolates, 10 (90.9%) tested negative for pyrazinamidase activity. a total of 60 isolates tested positive for pyrazinamidase activity. of those, 56 (93.3%) were found to be sensitive to pyrazinamide. conclusions: the high frequency of pyrazinamide-resistant strains (41.2%) in patients previously treated for tuberculosis highlights the need for drug susceptibility testing prior to the adoption of a new treatment regimen.
Metallo-beta-lactamase producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains isolated in hospitals in Recife, PE, Brazil
Magalhes, Vera;Lins, Ana Kelly;Magalhes, Marcelo;
Brazilian Journal of Microbiology , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-83822005000200005
Abstract: out of 24 nosocomial strains of pseudomonas aeruginosa from recife, brazil, 15 (62%) were metallo-b-lactamase producers. such isolates were resistant to main antipseudomonas drugs, except polymixyn b and aztreonam. the enzyme responsible for the carbapenem-resistance belongs to spm-1 class, and the gene involved, blaspm-1, is likely plasmid located.

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651992000200008
Abstract: of 3250 diarrheal stools received for microbiologic diagnosis at a private clinical laboratory in recife, brazil, strains of vibrio were isolated from 55 (1.7%). the study was carried out from may 1989 through may 1991. for recovering vibrio, fecal samples were enriched in alkaline peptone water supplemented with 2% nacl and subcultured on thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose agar (tcbs). of the recovered species, v. parahaemolyticus was most commonly found (24 strains), followed by v. furnissii (15 strains), v. cholerae non-01 (6 strains), v. alginolyticus (4 strains), v. fluvialis (2 strains), and vibrio sp. (1 strain). the low isolation rate of vibrio raises doubts about the cost-effectiveness of the use of tcbs in the routine enterobacteriologic workup of clinical laboratories
Uma outra moderniza??o: transportes em uma província n?o exportadora - Minas Gerais, 1850-1870
Godoy, Marcelo Magalhes;Barbosa, Lidiany Silva;
Economia e Sociedade , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-06182008000200007
Abstract: between 1750 and 1880, minas gerais developed an economy predominantly non-exporting as well as relatively independent of external markets of other brazilian regions and of foreign markets. due to such unique historical evolution, contemporaries had to develop specific understanding and ways of dealing with transportation problems. in nineteenth century, mainly in its third quarter, it were established the conditions for the modernization process of transportation in minas. those conditions allowed such modernization to take place apart from the determinations resulting from the hegemony of a primarily exportation economic model, specially based on hastening the construction of an integrated system. this text enlarges considerations about the history of transportation in the province of minas gerais. it presents and analyses documental evidences which demonstrate it can be mistaken the understanding of modernization of brazilian transportation considering a single model as well as the tendency to generalize to the whole country the historical experience of modernization based upon a railroad system.

Godoy, Marcelo Magalhes;Paiva, Clotilde Andrade;
Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982010000100010
Abstract: this article has the objective of showing the need for evaluating the quality of census information in named lists of inhabitants in the 19th century. the aim is also to propose a classification, according to the quality of the information, for the spatial units of information of the 1831-32 census carried out in the province (now state) of minas gerais, brazil and present preliminary and general findings on the occupational structure of the province on the basis of the mentioned census, as these results take into account the regional diversity of the province at the time. the demonstration of the effect of the quality of the information of occupation on the occupational structure on three levels of aggregation (provincial, regional and district) showed that researchers should not fail to assess the extent and limits of the data available when dealing with historical censuses.

Abstract: During the early modern era, the city of Porto was the scenario of several popular uprisings, which have come to attract the interest of Portuguese historiography. This historiography however tends to analyse each riot as an isolated phenomenon, losing sight of important broad aspects which led to all these popular uprisings. Thus, this study aims to examine comparatively three riots in the city of Porto (1592, 1661, 1757), based on the existent descriptions of these popular uprisings. It was thus possible to conclude that, beyond the riots in the city of Porto, there were many clear motivations, featured places, leaderships and consequences encouraging their outbreak
