Investigaciones marinas , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71782007000100001
Abstract: the scallop argopecten purpuratus is characterized by variations in some immunity parameters of the hemolymph when faced with the pathology known as mantle retraction. a relationship between the hemocytic reaction of encapsulation and this pathology was established with light and electronic transmission microscopy. the quantitative comparison of the number of hemocytes, the phagocytic capacity of these cells in the presence of yeasts, and the cytotoxicity of the hemolymph in specimens with and without mantle retraction showed that the hemocytes and serum of scallops with mantle retraction respond differently. when mantle retraction is observed, the number of circular he-mocytes decreases. in exchange, the serum increases its cytotoxic capacity when faced with erythrocytes. on the other hand, when the yeasts were previously incubated in this serum, the phagocytic capacity of the hemocytes decreased. the results show that the pathology known as mantle retraction in the scallop determines a significant variation in cellular immunity and the humoral components of the hemolymph, and an encapsulation response in the presence of coalescent bodies in the mantle

The scallop Argopecten purpuratus is characterized by variations in some immunity parameters of the hemolymph when faced with the pathology known as mantle retraction. Abstract: Learning through aesthetics—in which cinema is included—stimulates learner reflection. Because emotions play key roles in learning attitudes and changing behavior, teachers must impact learners’ affective domain. Since feelings exist before concepts, the affective path is a critical path to the rational process of learning. Likewise, faculty use their own emotions in teaching, so learning proper methods to address their affective side is a complementary way to improve their communication with students. This paper presents experiences of how to use cinema for educating emotions, among students and teachers, to foster reflection and improve teaching skills.
Physiological mechanisms of vascular response induced by shear stress and effect of exercise in systemic and placental circulation.

Frontiers in Pharmacology , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fphar.2014.00209
Abstract: Physiological vascular function regulation is essential for cardiovascular health and depends on adequate control of molecular mechanisms triggered by endothelial cells in response to mechanical and chemical stimuli induced by blood flow. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the main risk factors of cardiovascular pathology, where the imbalance between the synthesis of vasodilator and vasoconstrictor molecules is common in the development of vascular disorders in systemic and placental circulation. In the placenta, an organ without autonomic innervations, the local control of vascular tone is critical for maintenance of fetal growth and mechanisms that underlie shear stress response induced by blood flow are essential during pregnancy. In this field, shear stress induced by moderate exercise is one of the most important mechanisms to improve vascular function through nitric oxide (NO) synthesis and stimulation of mechanical response of endothelial cells triggered by ion channels, caveolae, endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), among others. The demand for oxygen and nutrients by tissues and organs, especially in placentation and pregnancy, determines blood flow parameters and physiological adaptations of vascular beds for covering metabolic requirements. In this regard, moderate exercise versus sedentarism shows potential benefits for improving vascular function associated with the enhancement of molecular mechanisms induced by shear stress. In this review, we collect evidence about molecular bases of physiological response to shear stress in order to highlight the relevance of moderate exercise-training for vascular health in adult and fetal life.
Constructing nearly Frobenius algebras

Mathematics , 2013,
Abstract: In the first part we study nearly Frobenius algebras. The concept of nearly Frobenius algebras is a generalization of the concept of Frobenius algebras. Nearly Frobenius algebras do not have traces, nor they are self-dual. We prove that the known constructions: direct sums, tensor, quotient of nearly Frobenius algebras admit natural nearly Frobenius structures. In the second part we study algebras associated to some families of quivers and the nearly Frobenius structures that they admit. As a main theorem, we prove that an indecomposable algebra associated to a bound quiver $(Q,I)$ with no monomial relations admits a non trivial nearly Frobenius structure if and only if the quiver is $\overrightarrow{\mb{A}_n}$ and I=0. We also present an algorithm that determines the number of independent nearly Frobenius structures for Gentle algebras without oriented cycles.

González A.,Marcelo; Rojas Z.,Patricia; Campalans B.,Mariel;
Investigaciones marinas , 1999, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-71781999002700012
Metazoan parasite fauna of the bigeye flounder, Hippoglossina macrops, from Northern Chile. Influence of host age and sex
González, M Teresa;Acu?a, Enzo;Oliva, Marcelo E;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762001000800004
Abstract: the metazoan parasite fauna of hippoglossina macrops (n = 123) from northern chile (30°s) is quantitatively described for the first time, and the role of host age and sex was evaluated. twelve parasite species were recovered, including 5 ectoparasites (2 monogenea, 2 copepoda and 1 piscicolidae) and 7 endoparasites (1 digenea, 3 cestoda, 2 acanthocephala, and 1 nematoda). the copepod holobomolochus chilensis, the monogenean neoheterobothrium sp., the adult acanthocephalan floridosentis sp. and the hirudinean, gliptonobdella sp. are new geographical and host records. the most prevalent ectoparasitic species were the monogenean, neoheterobothrium sp. and the copepod, h. chilensis. among endoparasites, the acanthocephalans floridosentis sp. and corynosoma australe were most prevalent and abundant. prevalence and mean intensity of infection for most parasitic species were not affected by host sex, however the prevalence of floridosentis sp. was significantly greater in males. intensity of infection was positively correlated with host age for neoheterobothrium sp., and negatively correlated for floridosentis sp. and h. chilensis. the helminth species richness of the host h. macrops was lower compared to related flatfishes from the northern hemisphere. the relationship of the helminth fauna of h. macrops, its feeding habits and ecological habitats are discussed.

To establish if oral contraceptives composed by estrogens and progestogens are useful in the management of ovarian cysts that appear benign in transvaginal ultrasound.
