Abstract: the cultivar mandirituba is the only genetic material for chamomile cultivation in southern brazil. besides the limitations regarding floral buds and the yield of essential oil presented by this cultivar, phytosanitary problems have also been observed. the objectives of this work were to compare the genetic materials from the netherlands, denmark and mandirituba and to evaluate the effect of seeding rate on floral heads development and essential oil production, yield and quality. the experiments were carried out at field conditions in piraquara, paraná state, brazil. the essential oil extraction was obtained by hydrodistillation using a clevenger apparatus and the oil composition was analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (gc/ms). the genetic materials from the netherlands and mandirituba presented statistically higher dry mass accumulation than the ones from denmark. however the material from mandirituba showed a great essential oil yield (4.7 ml g-1 ms) and productivity (2.40 l ha-1). the genetic material from denmark and mandirituba showed similar essential oil composition. the density of 1.0 kg ha-1 for cultivar mandirituba resulted on great plant development and essential oil production. the use of 3.0 kg ha-1 of seeds did not increase plant density due to the high plant competition.
Apoio social e saúde entre idosos

Abstract: the present article focuses in the bibliographical review of the liaison between social relationships and seniors' health, as well as in the interpretation and understanding of this problem under the light of two theoretical approaches: a macro, centered in emile durkheim's theory of social integration and other micro, centered in peter blau′s theory of changes, with an emphasis in the theory of equity. the social integration (incidence of contacts) may have negative effects in a senior′s health; however this has to be measured by the quality of the contacts. some of the presented conclusions indicate that social relationships have an effect in health, in the sense that people, in the modern societies, expect reciprocity. when this is not possible, especially during the aging process, people feel dependent, and this can affect health in different ways. on the other hand, when people have health problems they experience a lack of balanced social relationships due to their incapacity to exchange in equal bases. therefore, the author concludes that the link between social relationships and health in the senior population can be a reciprocal association.
Apoio social e saúde entre idosos

Sociologias , 2002,

Abstract: the micropropagation is one technique that makes possible the massal propagation of plants of economic interest. the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of 6-benzilaminopurina (bap) and kinetin (kin) in the multiplication in vitro of the grapevine rootstock 'vr043-43'. the isolation was carried through in culture medium ql, supplemented with bap or kin, in the concentrations of 0; 2,5; 5,0 and 10,0μm. the subcultures had been carried out each 45 days. the number of shoots per explant increased along with the subcultures with bap. however this effect was not observed with the kin that it got resulted similar to the one of the cytokin-free (1,0 shoot/explant). the concentrations of 5,0 nd 10,0 μm of bap had promoted the biggest number of shoots with reduction of the height. the highest concentration of kin (10,0 μm) also had negative effect in the height of the shoots, as well as, in the number of leaves per shoot. the callus formation (100%) was observed with bap and kin in all the concentrations, and in the cytokinin absence it did not have the callus formation. cytokinin bap reduced the formation of roots that was of 100% with the kin and cytokinin-free.

Abstract: the right choice of the culture medium is an important factor for micropropagation mainly because of the mineral component role during the regeneration process. this research was aimed at evaluating the effect of the ms/2, nn, wpm, ql and c2d culture medium on the establishment of nodal segments and multiplication of grapevine rootstock 'vr043-43'. the data was analyzed according to a randomized complete block design with four replications. the culture medium had no significant effect on the number of shoots per explant in the initial culture and subcultures. for the first subculture, the best number of microcuttings per initial explant was obtained using the ms/2, ql and c2d culture medium. for the second subculture no statistical differences were observed between treatments. shoot height in the initial, first and second subcultures increased with ql culture medium. for the first subculture, 83.3% of rooting was found on shoots growing in the ql culture medium. the best results of shoot development for the initial culture of the grapevine rootstock of 'vr043-43' in vitro using nodal segments and its microcuttings multiplication were obtained with the ql culture medium.

Abstract: The South-American eel. Two early letters on animal electricity from the Dutch colonies Speculations about the nature of nerve action, including animal spirits, date back to antiquity. Only during the 18th century, when it became possible to store electricity in Leyden jars, did natural philosophers begin to realise that the sensations caused by electric fish are like those produced by these primitive capacitors. The important roles played by amateur observers in the Dutch colonies of South-America, and how they communicated with more established Dutch scientists in the Netherlands, are often relatively overlooked in histories of how the nerves became electrical. In this article we examine two mid-18thcentury letters from South-America to the Netherlands. Both dealt with what would soon be called the electric eel, and were published in the proceedings of the first Dutch Society of Science (in Haarlem). The discovery of the electric nature of the shocks produced by these fish in particular proved to be a crucial step in understanding animal electricity and the true nature of neurophysiology.
Reduced neutron widths in the nuclear data ensemble: Experiment andtheory do not agree

Abstract: I have analyzed reduced neutron widths (Γ0n) for the subset of 1245 resonances in the nuclear data ensemble (NDE) for which they have been reported. Random matrix theory (RMT) predicts for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) that these widths should follow a χ2 distribution having one degree of freedom (ν = 1) - the Porter Thomas (PT) distribution. Using the maximum-likelihood (ML) technique, I have determined that the Γ0n values in the NDE are best described by a χ2 distribution having ν = 0.80 ± 0.052, which is 3.8 standard deviations smaller than predicted by RMT. I show that this striking disagreement is most likely due to the inclusion of significant p-wave contamination to the supposedly pure s-wave NDE. Furthermore, when an energy-dependent threshold is used to remove the p-wave contamination, ML analysis yields ν = 1.217 ± 0.092 for the remaining data, still in poor agreement with the RMT prediction for the GOE. These results cast very serious doubt on claims that the NDE represents a striking confirmation of RMT.
Reduced neutron widths in the nuclear data ensemble: Experiment and theory do not agree

Abstract: I have analyzed reduced neutron widths ({\Gamma}_{n}^0) for the subset of 1245 resonances in the nuclear data ensemble (NDE) for which they have been reported. Random matrix theory (RMT) predicts for the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) that these widths should follow a \c{hi}^2 distribution having one degree of freedom ({\nu}=1) - the Porter Thomas distribution (PTD). Careful analysis of the {\Gamma}_{n}^2 values in the NDE rejects the validity of the PTD with a statistical significance of at least 99.97% ({\nu}=0.801\pm0.052). This striking disagreement with the RMT prediction is most likely due to the inclusion of significant p-wave contamination to the supposedly pure s-wave NDE. When an energy dependent threshold is used to remove the p-wave contamination, the PTD is still rejected with a statistical significance of at least 98.17% ({\nu}=1.217\pm0.092). Furthermore, examination of the primary references for the NDE reveals that many resonances in most of the individual data sets were selected using methods derived from RMT. Therefore, using the full NDE data set to test RMT predictions seems highly questionable. These results cast very serious doubt on claims that the NDE represents a striking confirmation of RMT.
Constraints on the $^{22}Ne(α,n)^{25}$Mg s-process neutron source from analysis of $^{nat}Mg+n$ total and $^{25}Mg(n,γ)$ cross sections

Physics , 2002, DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevC.66.055805
Abstract: I have analyzed previously reported $^{\text{nat}}$Mg+\textit{n%} total and $^{25}$Mg(\textit{n},$\gamma $) cross sections to obtain a much improved set of resonance parameters for states in $^{26}$Mg between threshold and the lowest observed $^{22}$Ne($\alpha $,\textit{n})$^{25}$Mg resonance, and an improved estimate of the uncertainty in the $^{22}$Ne($% \alpha $,\textit{n})$^{25}$Mg reaction rate. For example, definitely two, and very likely at least four, of the states in this region have natural parity and hence can contribute to the $^{22}$Ne($\alpha $,\textit{n})$^{25}$% Mg reaction, but two others definitely have non-natural parity and so can be eliminated from consideration. As a result, a recent evaluation in which it was assumed that only one of these states has natural parity has underestimated the reaction rate uncertainty by at least a factor of ten, whereas evaluations that assumed all these states could contribute probably have overestimated the uncertainty.
Recent Astrophysics Results from ORELA and Possible Future Experiments at ORELA and SNS
P. E. Koehler
Physics , 2002,
Abstract: I present some recent results from experiments at the Oak Ridge Electron Linear Accelerator (ORELA) and discuss their impact in nuclear astrophysics. I then describe some possible future nuclear astrophysics experiments at ORELA and at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) being built in Oak Ridge. The SNS and ORELA are complementary, world-class facilities and both will be needed for important future experiments in nuclear astrophysics.
