Management and Outcome of Pregnant Women with HIV Acquired by Vertical Transmission  [PDF]

Abstract: The majority of children with perinatally acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) do not survive beyond childhood but this is changing due to the benefit of antiretroviral therapy for the perinatally infected cohort, so affected children are now approaching the age to be mothers. The aim of this article is to evaluate the outcomes of pregnant women with HIV acquired by vertical transmission in our centre and encourage the results obtained in “Thirty Years Later: Pregnancies in Female Perinatally Infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus-1”, a review article published in this journal in 2012 [2]. We report 6 patients with eight pregnancies with HIV acquired by vertical transmission. They delivered a total of nine newborns between 2004 and 2013. In any case, mother-to-child transmission was reported. The management of pregnant women with HIV acquired by vertical transmission is complicated, since the patients are the most of the cases young and the compliance to the treatment may be poor. The prematurity was the more frequent complication and the cesarean section was the more frequent form of ending. In our case series, mother-to-child transmission was absent.

Abstract: Los/as lectores/as podrán observar a lo largo de la publicación que aún siendo artículos independientes, todos ellos reflejan la preocupación por profundizar la reflexión sobre temáticas vinculadas a problemáticas sociales actuales, de interés para los cientistas sociales de diferentes disciplinas. Es así que temas referidos a poblaciones “vulnerables”, su significado y significación ocupa gran parte del presente volumen. Cabe destacar la centralidad del individuo en su contexto socio-histórico-político-económico y cultural. Individuos que padecen el estigma, la discriminación en algunos casos, pero por sobre todo siendo destinatarios de una categorización social que los trasciende y que en múltiples sentidos los sujeta.

Abstract: This article shows the most relevant aspects of this lengthy war, both from the polemological point of view, and that of the military profession, the latter specifically oriented towards the basic disciplines that every officer must study: Strategy, Tactics and Organization. At the time, Logistics was an integral part of Strategy, and Communications, still rudimentary, were not yet managed by specialists. Considering the length of the article, the author has not dealt with the military battles, combats or meetings that took place on the Peninsula. RESUMEN: El autor trata de exponer los aspectos más relevantes de esta dilatada guerra, tanto desde el punto de vista polemológico, como desde el de la profesión militar, este último concretamente orientado hacia las disciplinas básicas que debe estudiar todo oficial de Estado Mayor, Estrategia, Táctica y Organización. Explica el autor que la Logística, por entonces, era parte integrante de la Estrategia y las Comunicaciones, por rudimentarias, no estaban constituidas como materia básica gestionada por un cuerpo de especialistas. Dada la longitud del artículo, el autor no se ha centrado en las campa as, ni en las batallas, combates y encuentros que en la Península tuvieron lugar.

Abstract: Aging can be interpreted as an unavoidable process whose end point is the death. Aging entails, in the hemostasis field, some changes that favour blood hypercoagulability. Both the plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), specific inhibitor of the tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), accompanied by the oxidative stress and the marked decrease of the main antioxidant—glutathione are fundamental in the bases of elderly pathologies which can cause death. There is some scientific evidence of the relationship between aging, neuro-degenerative diseases, an excessive production of reactive oxygen species and the decrease of proteolysis in brain. The cerebral plasminogen/plasmin system represents the essential proteolytic mechanism that degrades amyloid peptides (β-amyloidosis) for action of plasmin with effectiveness. This physiologic process is being considered as a preventive neurodegenerative mechanism. At the same time, the decrease of glutathione levels in aging entails a decrease of cerebral plasmin activity and a progressive descent of t-PA activity due to a descent in t-PA expression and an increase in PAI production. All of them entail an increment of amyloid beta peptides (Aβ) production and a lower level of their clearance. Both mechanisms, oxidative stress, direct consequence of the oxygenate metabolism of aerobics cells, and changes in the systemic fibrinolysis and cerebral b-amyloidolytic activity, play a very important role in thromboembolic disease, metabolic syndrome—obesity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia—, type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease, clinical processes that accompany the aging. In this revision we show the importance of the interaction between glutathione, proteolytic t-PA/plasminogen/plasmin system, and the inhibitor PAI-1 in aging physiopathology, whose results suggest the hypothesis of the importance of a therapeutic strategy using the inhibition of PAI-1 as a goal, because it is increased in the different aging pathologic processes.

Abstract: this house is a product of the prolongation and transformation of an existing structure. the lifting of the roof is the principal movement that expands the view of the historical center of the city. from the original beams the new levels are hung; the system is flexible and changes form according to the program's requirements. despite the variation of the central element of the project, the system maintains a geometric order based on the separation of the beams of the original roof, details of the repeating joints and the use of wood as the main material.

Abstract: the purpose of this work is to study the economic repercussions which may be experienced as a result of the participation of women in high-level decision making processes of financial sector businesses listed in the spanish capital markets. an analysis is made of the relationship between the presence of women in posts of entrepreneurial responsibility and the success of the organization, using the theoretical framework provided by the management of diversity. the methodology used is analysis of linear regression, and analysis of variances (anova). the statistical analysis offers the conclusion that the presence of women the boards of the companies studied does not entail any impairment of the results of the business, and therefore, it is not understood that they do not have access to such posts on the same conditions as their male colleagues.
Effects of habitat and landscape characteristics on medium and large mammal species richness and composition in northern Uruguay

Abstract: the increasing world population and demand for food and other products has accelerated the conversion of natural habitats into agricultural lands, plantations and urban areas. changes in habitat and landscape characteristics due to land-use change can have a significant effect on species presence, abundance, and distribution. multi-scale approaches have been used to determine the proper spatial scales at which species and communities are responding to habitat transformation. in this context, we evaluated medium and large mammal species richness and composition in gallery forest (n = 10), grassland (n = 10), and exotic tree plantation (n = 10) in a region where grasslands have been converted into exotic tree plantations. we quantified mammal species richness and composition with camera traps and track surveys. the composition of the mammal community was related with local habitat variables, and landscape variables measured at seven spatial scales. we found 14 mammal species in forest, 11 species in plantation, and 7 mammal species in grassland. two species are exotics, the wild boar sus scrofa linnaeus, 1758 and the european hare lepus europaeus pallas, 1778. the most common species are the crab-eating fox cerdocyon thous linnaeus, 1766, the nine-banded armadillo dasypus novemcinctus linnaeus, 1758 and the gray brocket deer mazama gouazoubira g. fischer, 1814 which are generalist species. our results showed significant differences in mammal species richness and composition among the three habitat types. plantations can have positive and negative effects on the presence of species restricted to grasslands. positive effects are reflected in a wider local distribution of some forest species that rarely use grassland. the most important habitat and landscape variables that influenced mammal species richness and composition were vertical structure index, canopy cover, tree species diversity, percentage of grass, and the percentage of forest and grassland at the landscape
