Keynes’ Analytical System as an Econometric Tool: Examining Macroeconomic Trends in the U.S. from 1950s to 1980s  [PDF]
Manuel A. R. Da Fonseca
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2018.810112
Abstract: The initial goal of this paper is to develop the standard Keynes’ analytical system into a dynamic macro-econometric model, which is then applied to the analysis of macroeconomic indicators for the U.S. from 1950s to 1980s—a period marked by strong volatility of inflation, exchange rates and commodity prices. Based on the results obtained and, in particular, on the model’s structure and exogenous variables, it is possible to single out the main factors that explain the macro-trends observed in the American economy. Further, a second and more important goal is to evaluate if a simple macro-dynamic model can be a relevant tool in empirical analysis of macroeconomic developments. The results obtained indicate that, although the elements of the Keynesian system are most often used in a purely theoretical perspective, a macro-econometric model based on those elements can be successfully used in reproducing overall macroeconomic variables in a certain period—and the determinants of those macro-trends can be traced to the model’s exogenous variables.
Guariguata,Manuel R;
Revista de Estudios Sociales , 2009,
Abstract: the links between tropical forests and global climate change have traditionally focused on mitigation. much less emphasis, by contrast, has been devoted to how management activities may help forest ecosystems adapt to a changing climate. this article discusses how some kinds of forestry management practices can help maintain or enhance the adaptive capacity of natural and planted tropical forests to global climate change. it also outlines some challenges, as well as opportunities, for integrating tropical forest management into climate-change adaptation more broadly. in addition to the use of reduced-impact logging to maintain ecosystem integrity, other approaches, such as fire prevention and management as well as specific silvicultural options aimed at facilitating genetic adaptation, may be needed. the normally higher intensity of management in tree plantations (compared to natural forests) offers additional opportunities for implementing adaptation measures at both the industrial and smallholder level. although the integration of measures aimed at enhancing adaptation to climate change may not involve substantial deviations from current practices, little action appears to have been taken on the ground. up to what point have forestry research and national policies promoted the adoption of management practices (many of which do not need much additional investigation) that assist exploited forests adapt to climate change? prioritizing adaptation in national development and forestry planning can serve as a first step towards incorporating climate change into tropical forestry management.

Cuartas R,Juan Manuel;
Discusiones Filosóficas , 2009,
Abstract: we return to andrés bello's work to integrate his deliberations to the history of philosophy. in 1829, at the request of simón bolivar, bello brought back to america not one but many revolutions: he organized "public instruction" in chile, was principal of the new universidad de chile, redacted the código civil chileno, oriented foreign policy, redacted tratado de derecho internacional, and lastly, happily culminated his gramática de la lengua castellana destinada al uso de los americanos (1847). among these revolutionary tasks, it is worth exploring the aspect of one of them, represented in filosofia del entendimiento. the task thus proposed, however, is not that simple, because the revolution in this work is strong in relation to outdated philosophical systems oriented to the prescription of behavioural canons and to the observation of dogmas.
Germán Espinosa y la lección del maestro
Cuartas R,Juan Manuel;
Co-herencia , 2010,
Abstract: the philosophical interest related language has in germán espinosa’s writing one solution: the pertinence between things and ideas which assure the logic comprehension. it is precisely in this point, where the present article proposes to develop a dialogue with the master. on germán espinosa’s la aventura del lenguaje, the image will be the world’s evaluation, and the poem’s history will be the proper history of man.
Cuartas R,Juan Manuel;
Co-herencia , 2011,
Abstract: the thesis i'm looking to advance is related to wittgestein's "stairway to emptiness, applied to the intellectual relationship between edmund husserl and hans-georg gadamer. an event that is not self evident if we consider that in philosophical discussions the "humanistic tradition plays a role that is difficult to put aside. the proximity between gadamer and husserl has shown gadamer's resistance to "appreciate husserl's complex phenomenology. the latter being put on hold by the difference revealed from the relationship philosophy - science in both authors.
MAURICE MERLEAU-PONTY Y EL ?PAISAJE DE LA FILOSOFíA DE LA EXISTENCIA?
Cuartas R.,Juan Manuel;
Cuartas R,Juan Manuel;
On the viability of democracy: Lessons from postwar Iraq
Manuel R. Torres Soriano
Revista CIDOB d'Afers Internacionals , 2009,
Abstract: The aim of this article is to reflect on the viability of democratisation processes in countries lacking in any previous history of political systems based on political pluralism and citizen representation. Iraq’s most recent history represents a paradigmatic example of the factors that explain the success or failure of processes of establishing and consolidating democracy in the world. The article analyses certain factors of the country’s social, political and economic structure which not only help to explain the development of events during Western occupation, they also demonstrate that the democratisation of Iraq was, and continues to be, an unfeasible objective for the short and medium-term future.
The Influence of the Neoconservative Ideology in the Preparation and Conduction of the Iraq War
Manuel R. Torres
UNISCI Discussion Papers , 2007,
Abstract: Understanding the logic of a war requires us to explore the ideology on which some of its fundamental decisions are based. This article starts from the assumption that the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 was strongly influenced by some of the theoretical tenets of the neoconservative thinking. In this study, some of this conflict's main episodes - threat perception, military planning, political previsions, etc. - are analyzed, interpreting them as an attempt of the decision makers to achieve coherence with the basic preconceptions and ideas of that ideology.
