Comparison of fatigue behaviour of eight different hip stems: a numerical and experimental study  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, finite element analysis was used to investigate the fatigue behavior of eight different hip stems. All of the prostheses investigated in the analysis are already being used in Turkish orthopaedic surgery. All stems were compared with each other in terms of fatigue, deformation and safety factors. Primary analysis was applied on three of the stems, which were tested experimentally. It was observed that the simulation and the experimental results are in good agreement with each other. After determining the reliability of the numerical method, the analysis was applied on all other stems. To obtain a more realistic simulation, boundary conditions were applied according to standards specified in the ISO 7206-4 standard. Three different types of materials were selected during analysis. These materials were Ti-6Al-4V, cobalt chrome alloy and 316L. Minimum fatigue cycles, critical fatigue areas, stresses and safety factor values have been identified. The results obtained from the finite element analysis showed that all stems were safe enough in terms of fatigue life. As a result of fatigue analysis, all stems have been found to be successful, but some of them were found to be better than the others in terms of safety factor. The current study has also demonstrated that analysing hip stems with the finite element method (FEM) can be applied with confidence to support standard fatigue testing and used as an alternative. Further studies can expand the simulations to the clinical relevance due to complex physical relevance.
Teachers’ Professional Development Needs and the Systems That Meet Them  [PDF]

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify professional development needs of primary and secondary school teachers and to present their views on the systems that meet those needs. The research model utilized in the study was the mixed model type. Findings related to identification of teachers’ professional development needs were collected through quantitative methods whereas findings related to systems that meet those needs were collected qualitatively. The study utilized survey model since it identified teachers’ professional development needs and investigated the systems that meet those needs. The part of the study related to identification of teachers’ professional development needs was quantitative and the section that investigated the systems that met professional development needs was qualitative. Data regarding the quantitative part of the study was collected with a data collection tool composed of 34 items prepared by the researcher and the data regarding the qualitative part of the study was collected, a 5-item data collection tool prepared by the researcher. Working group was composed of a total of 207 teachers selected via “simple random sampling” from the universe. Results showed that teachers needed development in the following areas mostly: “extracurricular and classroom activities”, “instructional programs and evaluation”, “teacher-student relationships” and “organization of instructional environments”. Teacher stated that they met their professional development needs in the following order from the most to least: through own individual studies, social learning among colleagues, in-service training, school administration and educational inspection.
Usability of Polymer Concrete as a Machine-Making Material Regarding Fatigue Strength  [PDF]

Abstract: In many studies conducted on polymer concretes of different structures, some of the mechanical behaviours such as compression, bending, damping, and fatigue have been investigated. Specimens and experimental taxonomy used in the majority of these studies explore the idea of using polymer concrete either as a construction material or as a material for building the body of machine tools. The experimental methodology and specimens used in this study to investigate the fatigue strength were chosen according to the machine-making material. In “rotational flexural fatigue” experiments conducted using high compressive strength composite materials, fatigue strength values were observed to be lower than previous studies.
Determination of Potential Nutritive Value of Sainfoin (Onobrychis sativa) Hays Harvested at Flowering Stage

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the potential nutritive value of sainfoin (Onobrychis viciaefolia) hays harvested at flowering stage from Afsin, Tekir, Pazarcik, Baskonus and Kapicam using chemical composition and in vitro gas production technique. Chemical composition including Crude Protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), ash Condensed Tannin (CT), Organic Matter Digestibility (OMD) and Metabolisable Energy (ME) were calculated. Gas productions were determined at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h incubation times and their kinetics were described using the equation Y = a+b (1-exp-ct). The CP, NDF, ADF and CT content of sainfoin hay ranged from 11.39-17.70, 43.31-47.64, 35.61-43.30 and 4.19-9.95%, respectively. The sainfoin obtained from Afsin and Baskonus had significantly (p<0.001) higher crude protein contents than those of sainfoin hays from Tekir, Pazarcik and Kapicam. The NDF content of sainfoin hay obtained from Pazarcik and Kapicam was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of sainfoin hays from Afsin and Tekir the ADF content of sainfoin hay from Kapicam was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of sainfoin hays from Afsin, Tekir, Pazarcik and Baskonus. The CT content of sainfoin hay from Pazarcik was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of sainfoin hays from Afsin, Tekir, Baskonus and Kapicam. The gas production from slowly soluble fraction of sainfoin hay from Afsin was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of sainfoin hays from Tekir and Kapicam. The ME and OMD ranged from 6.86-7.79 MJ kg ̄1 DM, 47.82-53.17%, respectively. The ME and OMD content of sainfoin hay from Afsin was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of sainfoin hays from Tekir and Kapicam. As a conclusion, the growing site had a significant effect on the chemical composition in vitro gas production, ME and OMD of sainfoin hay harvested at flowering stage. There are considerable variations in chemical composition of sainfoin hay harvested at flowering stages among growing sites. The ME and OMD values of sainfoin hay are negatively correlated with cell wall and CT contents but positively correlated with CP content.
Determination of Potential Nutritive Value of Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Leaves Using in vitro Gas Production Technique

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the potential nutritive value of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) leaves from five pepper species using chemical composition and in vitro gas production technique. Chemical composition including Dry Matter (DM) Crude Protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF) Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF) and ash were determind. Gas productions were determined at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h incubation times and their kinetics were estimated using the exponential equation Y = A (1 - exp-ct). The Organic Matter Digestibility (OMD) and Metabolisable Energy (ME) of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) leaves from five pepper species were estimated. The DM, CP, NDF, ADF contents of leaves from five pepper species ranged from 17.44-19.69, 13.88-18.76, 26.57-32.72 and 15.64-20.98%, respectively. The pepper leaves obtained from Maras species had significantly (p<0.001) higher CP contents than those of Hatay, 46, Balo and Sena species. Although, the NDF content of pepper leaves obtained from Hatay species was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of Maras, 46, Balo and Sena species the ADF content of pepper leaves obtained from Sena was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of pepper leaves obtained from Hatay, Maras, 46, Balo and Sena. The gas production rate, potential gas production, ME and OMD of pepper leaves from Sena was significantly (p<0.001) higher than those of pepper leaves from Hatay, Maras, 46 and Balo. The species had a significant effect on the chemical composition in vitro gas production, ME and OMD of pepper leaves obtained after harvest. Despite there are considerable variations in chemical composition of pepper leaves obtained after harvest among pepper species, pepper leaves had high CP and was quite digestible. It appears that pepper leaves obtained after harvest will provide biomass of an acceptable quality for ruminant animals during critical periods when forage shortage occurs.
Effect of Ensiling of Alfalfa with Sorghum on the Chemical Composition and Nutritive Value of Silage Mixtures

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of ensiling of alfalfa plant with sorghum plant on the chemical composition and nutritive value of silage mixtures using in vitro gas production technique. Chemical composition including; Dry Matter (DM), Crude Protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), Acid Detergent Fiber (ADF), Ash Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA), lactic acid and pH were determind. Gas productions were determined at 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h incubation times and their kinetics were estimated using the exponential equation Y = A (1 - exp ct). The Organic Matter Digestibility (OMD) and Metabolisable Energy (ME) of the resultant silages were estimated. Ensiling of alfalfa plant with sorghum plant had a significant effect on the chemical composition, fermentation parameters, potential gas production, OMD and ME values of the resultant silages. Ensiling of alfalfa with sorghum plant increased the lactate and propionate production, OMD, ME but decreased acetate and butyrate production, CP content and pH of the resultant silage. As a conclusion, ensiling of alfalfa plant with sorghum plant will overcome some of the drawbacks related to low DM and water soluble carbohydrate contents and high buffering capacity of alfalfa plant.

Discrimination in the working life: A sample of tourism sector

Abstract: Discrimination in the working life is one of the most important issues in the tourism sector. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of demographics factors on discrimination in the working life. First, a literature review was conducted and questionnaire was developed from the studies in the literature. In the first stage, before gathering the data from survey, job advertisements in tourism sector were analyzed and, in the second stage, content analysis was conducted on job application forms. In the third stage, data were collected by researchers in face-to-face interviews with 209 employees and were analyzed with PASW statistical programs. Structural and convergent validity of the data have revealed with the explanatory factor analysis. It was tested using a regression analysis to determine the effects of demographics factors on dependent variables. As a result, independent variables have effects on the dependent variable.

Abstract: s a religious institution of caliphate appeared after the death of the Prophet (Mohammed) was under the controlled by many states and families until the abolition of it. Besides, during certain periods, we could see more than one caliphate. After the captured of Egypt by Ottoman Sultan, Yavuz Sultan Selim, caliphate got into a new process. Especially it has been wished to use more effective towards at the end of Ottoman State. But outbreak of World War I, thoroughly focused on the discussions about the authority of the caliphate. After losing the war with the occupation of the territories of the Ottoman Empire and the starting of National Struggle, a new transformation would raise whether in society or state institutions. In this article, general assessments have been aimed to make that happened in the process of the abolition of the caliphate, Parliament’s attitude and Mustafa Kemal Pasha’s approaching to the debate.

Abstract: The notes on death themselves are indicators of the richness of the literary styles in bibliographies which tell us about the people who leave indelible marks on classic literature and vefayat-nama. The authors of tezkires, vefayat-namas and other bibliographic books preferred to use an ornamented language rather than a simple one while they were expressing the death of poets, authors, musicians and velis. In this explanation, it is possible to define our people's point of view about death. The author regarded the death as a change of place, the migrate from this world to the other world and he became the sound of soul. In his explanation, the death is a migration and a journey to heaven. Therefore, these works have a significance in terms of cultural and folklore history.
