The Social Sciences , 2013,
Abstract: The term quality, previously associated only to manufacturing and service activities, is now becoming more relevant in the social sciences. In such a context, quality can be seen as a measure for assessing one s living conditions. The objective of this study is to examine to what degree middle-class Mexican families use the quality principles and philosophies -as they are commonly known in productive systems- while functioning as a social entity. Twenty five randomly selected middle-class families from the Northeastern part of Mexico were surveyed by means of a series of questionnaires designed by ten quality experts. From the collected responses, it is clear that within middle-class Mexican families there is a strong awareness of the benefits that can be obtained from the application of the principles encouraged by a culture of quality.

Interciencia , 2006,
Abstract: the history of development of winter wheat cultivation in five irrigation districts in northwestern mexico is analyzed. the accelerated growth of winter wheat yields in northwestern mexico can be described by adjustment of the parameters of the logistic model. a common variation in the analyzed series exists, which is determined by the positive tendency of the series, a product of the green revolution. this event explains 80% of the observed variation. nevertheless, social and economic conditions, and regional geography, suggest differential development. four agricultural developments are defined: borders (mexicali-san luis-río colorado), indigenous agriculture (ejidales colonias yaquis), private agriculture (valle del yaqui and mayo), and pioneers (valle de santo domingo in baja california sur). the development of each group is compared with the national efficiency curve. the purpose is to compare wheat yields in the main irrigated valleys of northwestern mexico during the green revolution and the following stabilization, based on social and historic events. the possibility of increasing productivity as a function of the historic maximum reached at regional and national levels is discussed

Interciencia , 2008,
Abstract: a general description of the seasonal pattern of chlorophyll a (chl-a) and sea surface temperature (sst) in the western gulf of mexico (taumalipas, veracruz, tabasco, campeche, yucatan and quitana roo) is presented, as well as an analysis of the inter-annual variability in the states of tabasco and campeche, as case studies. the time series were estimated from satellite images obtained with the octs-seawifs (1996-2007) y avhrr (1996-2006) sensors. two periods when warm conditions (1997-1999) and cold conditions (2000-2001) predominated were identified, which could be related to changes in the regional ecosystem.

Abstract: objective: to identify what students at the universidad autónoma de tamaulipas school of nursing in tampico, méxico know about pain management. method: this is a descriptive, transverse and correlational study based on a sample of 139 students from academic periods six to eight during 2006. a sample of 30 nursing teachers was used as well, for an insight into their opinion on what students know. two questionnaires were designed. one was for the students, with 33 reactions classified into three dimensions: pain classification, assessment and pharmacological questions. the questionnaire for the teachers included 25 reactions derived from those dimensions. the respective cronbach alphas obtained for these instruments were .85 and .82. the data were processed and analyzed with the spss statistical package (version 13). descriptive and inferential statistics were used. results: forty-one percent (41%) of the students were in the 22 to 24 age group, and 65% were in their seventh academic period. seventy percent (70%) had a high degree of knowledge. as to the teachers, 53% are full-time professors and 47% have 12 to 21 years of experience. seventy percent (70%) said the students have a moderate knowledge of pain management. the pearson correlation showed a significant relationship between the general knowledge index and the three variable dimensions. conclusion: the contents and methodology of the nursing subjects taught as part of essential professional training will have to be analyzed through collegiate work, specifically in terms of therapeutic pain management measures for those who use health services, based on a framework of technical, scientific, ethical and legal security.
Variability of rainfall from tropical cyclones in northwestern México and its relation to SOI and PDO
Atmósfera , 2008,
Abstract: tropical cyclones during september affect the semi-arid northwestern region of méxico with a relatively high frequency, bringing much-needed precipitation. this study provided a better understanding of tropical cyclone inter-annual variability, their relationships with other atmospheric-oceanic phenomena, and their inter-decadal occurrences. daily rain data from 534 meteorological stations were analyzed and used to calculate the percentage of the annual precipitation related to tropical cyclones of the eastern north pacific ocean affecting the region from 1949 to 2002. using interpolation techniques, the stations were grouped in 1o x 1° areas, and the area structure of the tropical cyclone influence was obtained using empirical orthogonal function (eof) variable analysis to identify five regions. representative inter-annual variation series from each region were analyzed to identify changes in the influence of tropical cyclones as part of the annual precipitation. a gradient of tropical cyclone influence was found declining from south to north, mainly in the peninsula area. a regime shift in 1976 is coincident with a shift trend in series from areas with larger tropical cyclones influence. the southern oscillation index (soi) driving is stronger for the northern part of the region, while the southern part has stronger pacific decadal oscillation (pdo) influence.

Abstract: jumbo squid fishery is an important economic activity in the northwest region of mexico. although jumbo squid is mainly exported, in recent years its national market has increased. this article presents a comparative analysis of tastes and preferences regarding the consumption of jumbo squid at the regional level. surveys in six cities in northwest mexico were applied in 2004 and 2006. results show an increase in the consumption of jumbo squid, as well as an increase in frequency and quantity of consumed product.a greater disposition for jumbo squid consumption was found, representing a diet alternative due to its nutritional characteristics and accessible price.
Relationship between ENSO and winter-wheat yields in Sonora, Mexico
César A. Salinas-Zavala,Daniel B. Lluch-Cota
Geofísica internacional , 2003,
Abstract: Winter-grown wheat is one of the main cultivates in river-irrigated valleys of the state of Sonora, northwest Mexico. Although largely determined by technological improvements and management, wheat yields may still reflect year-to-year variations partially determined by climatic factors, including the extreme phases of El Ni o-Southern Oscillation. We analyzed time series of yearly wheat yields for five locations; yield residuals were obtained from a logistic model in order to eliminate long-term trends due to technological development. The series of residuals were found to be significantly correlated to at least one other series. This common variability was extracted by means of Principal Component Analysis. The first component accounted for a 63% of total variance. The amplitude time series of this component was compared to indices of ENSO. El Ni o (La Ni a) episodes seem to result in an increase (decrease) in wheat yields, which is consistent with previous reports of an increased (decreased) precipitation over northwest Mexico during these events.
