Is triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio a surrogates for insulin resistance in youth?  [PDF]
Ant?nio C. Oliveira, Ana M. Oliveira, Nelson Oliveira, Atila Oliveira, Marcele Almeida, Lorena M. Veneza, Ana Luisa Oliveira, Luis Adan, Ana M. Ladeia
Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.53066
Abstract: As elevated triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio has been described as predictor for cardio metabolic disease with insulin resistance (IR) in the background, the aim was to assess the relationship between this ratio and IR in youth. Oral glucose tolerance test was performed in 318 Brazilian students (175 girls, 11.2 ± 3.2 years, BMI_z-score 1.2 ± 1.4 SD). Measurements: BMI, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), lipids, insulin and high sensitivity Creactive protein (hsCRP). Excessive weight and abdominal obesity were defined using BMI_z-score and WC and IR by Homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). TG/HDL-C median was 2.37. There was an association between TG/ HDL-C and WC, systolic and diastolic BP, insulin, HOMA-IR, hsCRP, (p < 0.001). Stratified TG/HDL-C into two groups, based on a cut off point of 2.73 (Group 1: <2.73 and Group 2: ≥2.73). Ad- justing for age, gender, ethnicity TG/HDL-C was an independent variable predicting IR (PR = 1.44; CI: 1.07 - 1.96; p = 0.018). For every 1 (cm) in WC increased there was an addition of 0.04 of the value of TG/HDL-C and in those with TG/HDL-C ≥ 2.73 for every 10 (cm) increase in WC there was an improve of 4% in the ratio. In conclusion: In youth, the TG/HDL-C ratio could be a useful index for identifying groups with IR.
Predispatch of Hydroelectric Power Systems with Modifications in Network Topologies  [PDF]
Silvia M. S. Carvalho, Aurelio Oliveira
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/am.2014.515221
Abstract:

In this article, the primal-dual interior-point methods are used to minimize costs and losses in a predispatch model for the generation and transmission of direct current (DC) power flow in a hydroelectric system with pre-programmed manipulations; i.e., in cases of preventive maintenance, within a period of twenty-four hours. From the computational standpoint, the effort required to solve a problem with and without manipulations is similar, and the reasons why will be also discussed in this study. Computational results prove these findings.

Origens do Brasil meridional: dimens?es da imigra??o polonesa no Paraná, 1871-1914
Oliveira, Márcio de;
Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-21862009000100012
Abstract: this paper discusses the origins of southern brazil focusing on the case study of polish immigration in the state of paraná, between 1870-1920. initially, we present an overview of immigration scientific models in brazilian social sciences. next, we summarize the history of polish immigration in paraná. we discuss the social and political context at the departure areas, the impact of federal and local policies (push factors) over immigrants and their role in the development of the state. after that, we show how they are considered in ancient polish european areas and the role they were claimed to play in the process of independence recovering of the polish state. finally, we present a short discussion about the distance between immigrants and emigrants in brazilian social history.
Diffusion-limited annihilation and the reunion of bounded walkers
Oliveira, M. J. de;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332000000100012
Abstract: we study the long time behavior of a one-species reaction-diffusion process ka ?la where k particles coalesce into l particles. the asymptotic time behavior of the density of particles is derived by mapping the reaction-diffusion process into the problem of the reunion of k random walkers bounded to move in a limited region
Trabalhando em saúde pública pelo interior do Brasil: lembran?as de uma gera??o de sanitaristas (1930-1970)
Fonseca,Cristina M. Oliveira;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232000000200012
Abstract: in this work we introduce some small pieces of interviews made with physicians who had acted in diverse brazilian institutions of public health, mainly in the period between 1930-1970. in these interviews we can find the descriptions of different forms of control and combat of a number of illnesses, the organizational formats of the existing institutions, and the conceptions that guided those professionals. the stories highlight in particular the presence of those professionals in different regions of the country.
A saúde da crian?a na política social do primeiro governo Vargas
Fonseca, Cristina M. Oliveira;
Physis: Revista de Saúde Coletiva , 1993, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-73311993000200004
Abstract: some remarkable features of the brazilian social policies, along the"first government of getúlio vargas (1930-45), are here outlined in an historical perspèctive, focusing on the health policies directed to the children. certain ideological principies that characterized the "varguista" social policy are identified as well as their influence on the organization and functionning of two services for the health of the children: the "hospitals-schools service" and the "laboratory of child-biology", with a special concern for the connections between ideology and public policies.
A trajetória do discurso ambiental em Curitiba (1960-2000)
Oliveira, Márcio de;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782001000100007
Abstract: this work analyses the discourse on the urban environment produced by curitiba's municipal prefecture between 1960 and 2000. contrary to official discourse, which presents environmental works as a result of a technical reflection and a planned action, it is shown how, in curitiba, natural factors and technical solutions to environmental problems were combined in a punctual and non-premeditated way.
O Estado em Durkheim: elementos para um debate sobre sua sociologia política
Oliveira, Márcio de;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782010000300009
Abstract: the fact that there is a political sociology to be found in durkheim has caused polemic and is a controversial matter, in brazil as well as france, particularly because this sub-field does not appear within the author's own division of sociology into sub-areas. this paper argues that there are elements that enable us to recognize a durkheimian political sociology. this is concretized through a detailed examination of the theoretical evolution of his thought since he returned from germany in 1886. following in the tracks of marcel mauss, who analyzed his work, and picking up as well from where his most important biographers (lukes and fournier) leave off, we look at how themes that are properly political (in particular, the state) emerge within durkheimian sociology. we conclude by asserting that it is not through reflection on the issue of power (or the state) in itself, but rather on the social function of this power and/or this state and its relationship to social mores that durkheim's political sociology should be understood.
O ISEB e a constru??o de Brasília: correspondências míticas
Oliveira, Márcio de;
Sociedade e Estado , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-69922006000200008
Abstract: this paper works on the connection between the higher institute of brazilian studies (instituto superior de estudos brasileiros, iseb) and the new capital of brazil, the city of brasília. we analyse the history of the institute as well as the works of his professors alberto guerreiro ramos, hélio jaguaribe and, above all, the works of roland corbisier (director of the institute between 1955 and 1959). there are many points in common between the institute and the nationalist ideologies. however, there is much more. by studying the history of the institute, the sociopolitical circunstances of this period and the policy of jk?s government, we conclude that there?s no causal relation among all of these ideas. actually, there are mutual correspondences and mythical accomplicity among all of these social actors around the general theme of nation's building.
Uso de nuevas herramientas para el control de triatominos en diferentes situaciones entomológicas en el continente americano
Oliveira Filho, Alfredo M.;
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86821997000100008
Abstract: the field results of new tools for triatomine control developed under the sponsorship of who/tdr are reported: a) a slow-release "paint" containing malathion; b) fumigant cans containing cypermethrin and ddvp , and c) sensor boxes for the detection of triatomine infestations. field assays were performed in chile, honduras and paraguay against triatoma infestans, t. dimidiata and rhodnius prolixus, accordingly to a standard protocol designed by a who experts committee. preliminary 6 months post-treatment results for the three countries show an efficient control when insecticide paints were used indoors and in the peridomicilium, keeping reinfestation near zero. the final results presented for chile two years post-treatment confirmed the superiority of the slow-release "paints". sensor boxes were less effective than man/hour captures in the detection of infested houses.
