New Formulation for Semi-Empirical Correlations for Penetration Jets  [PDF]

Abstract: Correlations for the extension of a water vapor jet injected in a liquid pool were historically proposed considering the mass flux (kg/m2/s) as a constant. The results were satisfactory, however adjusting the values by linear regression. Although, it presents the following drawbacks: 1) the formulation is only valid for the specific range of data for what it was created; 2) it does not allow the analytical evaluation of the heat transfer coefficient from the extension equation. This paper proposes a new formulation for the calculation of the mass flux, in such a way to remove both of these drawbacks.

Abstract: the garlic germplasm collection maintained by embrapa hortali?as comprises 89 accessions, representing the genetic diversity of this crop in the country. duplicates of the same genotype increase the cost of maintaining the collection, as well as make difficult their agronomic evaluation. the identification of duplicated accessions of the garlic germoplasm active bank was obtained through analysis of 27 variables of morphological characteristics. genotypic differentiation among thirteen groups was achieved by cluster analysis. the most important features for distinction of these groups through principal components analysis were: plant height with erect leaves at 60 days; plant height with normal leaves at 60 days; leaf insertion angle at 90 days; bulb colour; number of bulblets from sieves one, two, and four; weight of bulblets from sieve two; average weight of bulbs at harvest time; and average bulb weight at threshing time. the most important features for the distinction of group genotype representatives by canonic variables analysis were: plant height with erect leaves at 120 days; plant height with normal leaves at 60 days; leaf insertion angle at 90 days; number of leaves at 60 and 90 days; number of bulbs at harvest time; total number of bulbs; average weight of plants at first day and at 60 days; and average weight of bulbs. genotype representatives of different groups were distinctly characterised on the basis of 34 parameters, complemented by canonic variables analysis.

Landscape dynamics is a geoecological characteristic that defines changes in a landscape spatial structure and function during an established time scale. In this kind of analysis, geoprocessing is an essential tool, because it combines several technologies that help in this work. However, the majority of landscape dynamic investigations do not consider the dimensionality of the data and the information to be used, which is projected not measured from modeled (real) surface observations, and presents underestimated results, mainly in irregular relief landscapes. Considering that, this paper intends to assess the difference between observations on modeled and planimetric surfaces on the interpretation of landscape dynamics. The study was conducted in the massif of Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) using land use and soil cover maps of different times and a digital elevation models (DEM) generated based on a triangular irregular. The results show an increase of dynamic areas values when observations were carried out on modeled surface, as well as the deforestation rate (17.57% or 0.13 km2/year). This survey showed higher values in comparison with observations on planimetric surface, characterizing more realistic interpretations of how the structural elements and analyses made from these are structured in the landscape.

Abstract: a lixi(light intensifier x-ray image) device has been employed in a real-time neutron radiography system. the lixi is coupled to a video camera and the real-time images can be observed in a tv monitor, and processed in a computer. in order to get the real-time system operational, the neutron radiography facility installed at the iea-r1m nuclear research reactor of the ipen-cnen/sp has been optimized. the most important improvements were the neutron/gamma ratio, the effective energy of the neutron beam, decrease of the scattered radiation at the irradiation position, and the additional shielding of the video camera. several one-frame as well as computer processed images are presented. the overall modulation transfer function for the real-time system was obtained from the resolution parameter p = 0:44 ± 0:04mm; the system sensitivity, evaluated for a perspex step wedge, was determined and the average value is 0:70 ± 0:09mm.

Abstract: the present work had as aim the development of simple an analytical method, fast efficient and the determination of corticosteroids (cortisone, corticosterone, acetate of hidrocortisone and acetate of dexametasone) in sanguine samples of rats using an isocratic system of liquid chromatography of high efficiency (clae) with ultraviolet detention. the method involved direct injection of sanguine sample in a chromatographic column with internal surface of phase reverse (isrp-c18), using the composed mobile phase for drain plug phosphate ph 4,0: acetonitrile (65:35 v/v). the detention the analytes was obtained using an ultraviolet detector of changeable wave length (varian model 2550) adjusted in 240 nm and a 4400 integrator sp chromaject (varian associates, inc., sunnyvale, ca, usa). the extraction of the analyte resulted in recovery values between 90% and 108%, and variation coefficient enter 1,1% and 2.5%. the detention and quantification limits of the method were 0,02 and 0,04 μg ml-1, respectively. in conclusion, the analytical method possible the direct injection (on-line) of the sample without previous treatment also presenting some advantages, such as: fast, exactness, precision and specific.
Hospital strain colonization by Staphylococcus epidermidis

Abstract: the skin and mucous membranes of healthy subjects are colonized by strains of staphylococcus epidermidis showing a high diversity of genomic dna polymorphisms. prolonged hospitalization and the use of invasive procedures promote changes in the microbiota with subsequent colonization by hospital strains. we report here a patient with prolonged hospitalization due to chronic pancreatitis who was treated with multiple antibiotics, invasive procedures and abdominal surgery. we studied the dynamics of skin colonization by s. epidermidis leading to the development of catheter-related infections and compared the genotypic profile of clinical and microbiota strains by pulsed field gel electrophoresis. during hospitalization, the normal s. epidermidis skin microbiota exhibiting a polymorphic genomic dna profile was replaced with a hospital-acquired biofilm-producer s. epidermidis strain that subsequently caused repetitive catheter-related infections.
