Abstract: The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of the ethanolic extract of Syzygium aromaticum to albino rats. Forty eight Albino rats were employed to test the safety and the anti-inflammatory effect of the extract. Safety of the extract was examined on experimental animal’s model at three dose levels of the extract orally in daily doses for three weeks. Effects of S. aromaticum on rats revealed no significant effect on biochemical or haematological parameters. The anti-inflammatory effect of the extract was tested in four equal groups; groups 1 and 2 were treated with 250 and 500 mg/kg of the extract, respectively, group 3 was treated with indomethacine and group 4 was the untreated control. Carrageenan was used as an acute form inducer of inflammation. Indomethacine, the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), was used as a reference compound. Abstract: The performance of UASB (Up-flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor was investigated in the present study for treatment of flax retting wastewater. Batch and continuous experiments on a pilot scale were designed. The initial seed for granules (bacteria acclimation) formed earlier was from municipal sewage treatment plant with VSS of 18 - 20 g/L. Batch experiments proved that the sludge retention time (SRT) was 77 days. Under steady state conditions, continuous experiments were conducted at organic loading rates (OLRs) in the range of 1.2 to8.6 kgCODs m3·d1, where the hy- draulic retention time (HRT) decreased from 72 to 12 hrs. The results proved that the UASB technology provides good COD removal efficiency from 64.5% to 90.5% as COD loading rate decreased and good biogas production at proper food: micro-organism (F:M) ratios.
Analgesic Effect of Pre-Incisional Peritonsillar Infiltration of Ketamine for Post-Tonsillectomy Pain in Children  [PDF]

Abstract: Objective: Two different concentrations of ketamine 0.5 mg/kg, 0.25 mg/kg were applied to both tonsils perioperatively to check analgesic effect postoperatively in children. This study done at Department of anesthesia and otorhinolaryngology, faculty of medicine, Al-Azhar University hospitals, and the medical ethics committee. The study was conducted in the ENT operating theatre, Al-Azhar University Hospitals, from Jan. 2017 to June 2018. Methodology: We divided patients into 3 groups K1, K2 and S each group 25 patients, group K1 had 0.25 mg ketamine, group k2 had 0.5 mg ketamine and group S had normal saline as a control group. These groups assessed intraoperatively by Heart rate and main arterial pressure (MAP) were recorded at the intervals together with Ventilation parameters. Postoperative pain assessment by using Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Pain Scale (CHEOPS). The sedative condition was assessed with the Wilson sedation scale at 5, 15, 30, and 60 min after entrance to the PACU. CHEOPES was recorded only when patient modified Wilson sedation score was one. Incidences of postoperative complications as: blood loss, dysphagia, nausea and vomiting were noted and demonstrated; hallucinations will be observed and recorded. Results: There were no significant differences among the groups regarding age, gender and weight. There were no significant differences among the groups with respect to the demographic data, duration of surgery or anesthesia, and intraoperative blood loss. As regarding hemodynamics, mean blood pressure was significantly lower in group (K1) than group S (control group) at 20 and 30 minutes after injection of ketamine and significantly lower in group (K2) than group S (control group) at 20 and 30 minutes after injection of ketamine with no difference between group (K1) and (K2). There was a significant statistical difference in analgesia duration per hours and frequency of analgesics used over 24 hours between three groups, the duration was longer in group (K1) and (K2) and frequency of analgesics used over 24 hours (P value < 0.05). Regarding postoperative complications, there was no significant statistical differences as regard nausea and vomiting, but the percentage of dysphagia is significantly higher in group S (control group) than group (K1) and group (K2). Conclusions: In our study, we found that preincisional peritonsillar infiltration of 0.25 mg/kg or 0.5 mg/kg of ketamine given at approximately three minutes before surgery provides efficient pain

Abstract: Astrocytomas are tumors that arise from astrocytes—star-shaped cells that make up the “glue-like” or supportive tissue of the brain. Astrocytomas can appear in various parts of the brain and nervous system, including the cerebellum, the cerebrum, the central areas of the brain, the brainstem and the spinal cord. The main objective of this study was to detect the sensitivity of the CT scan in diagnosis of the brain astrocytoma, in patients who were confirmed as brain gliomas using computerized tomography of the brain versus brain tissue biopsy after surgery. One hundred and one patients were included in this study. Bio-data collected for these patients (age, gender), radiographic appearance, contrast enhancement and the site of the tumor, were statistically analyzed. Out of the 101 patients with brain gliomas, 52 (51.5%) were male whose ages ranged between 1 and 80 years, and 64 (63.4%) cases were diagnosed as astrocytoma by CT. This study concluded that the CT brain was sensitive in the diagnosis of brain astrocytomas.
Effect of Pesticide Residues (Sevin) on Carrot (Daucus carota L.) and Free Nitrogen Fixers (Azotobacter spp)  [PDF]

Abstract: Since the pesticides are considered as an essential component for crops production through controlling pests, they have shown a negative effect on crops and soil environment when used intensively. This experiment was conducted at Wadi Soba farm (Sharq Elneel) Khartoum, Sudan. It aimed to study the effect of Sevin residuals on carrot growth and Azotobacter spp. colonies growth. Carrot planted in late February 2013, Sevin pesticide (2.5 L/ha and 5 L/ha) was added to estimate plant height, dry weight, the number of plant leaves and the number of Azotobacter spp. colonies isolated from the carrot rhizosphere (0 - 15 cm). The obtained results showed that the Sevin recommended dose (2.5 L/ha) relatively had a positive effect on the plant height, dry weight, and the number of plant leaves. The average of plant height for recommended dose was 59.67 cm compared to control (53.67 cm) and high dose (27.33 cm). The average of plant dry weight obtained by the recommended dose was 503.33 g and for control was 476.67 g and for high dose was 166.7 g, it decreased 67% from control and recommended dose. The average of plant leaves number were 25.34, 13.66 and 21.33 for recommended dose, high dose and control respectively, the number of leaves increased about 16% by recommended dose and decreased 35% by high dose. The average of Azotobacter spp. colonies obtained by high dose of Sevin demonstrated a lower numbers which were 20 × 104, 5.67 × 106 and 0.33 × 108 compared with control (78.33 × 104, 44 × 106 and 15.33 × 108) and the recommended dose (64 × 104, 33 × 106 and 7 × 108). The high dose of Sevin had a negative effect on both carrot growth and Azotobacter spp. colonies growth.
Effect of Tubular Chiralities and Diameters of Single Carbon Nanotubes on Gas Sensing Behavior: A DFT Analysis  [PDF]

Using density functional theory, the adsorption of CO, CO2, NO and CO2 gas molecules on different chiralities and diameters of single carbon nanotubes is investigated in terms of energetic, electronic properties and surface reactivity. We found that the adsorption of CO and CO2 gas molecules is dependent on the chiralities and diameters of CNTs and it is vice versa for NO and NO2 gas molecules. Also, the electronic character of CNTs is not affected by the adsorption of CO and CO2 gas molecules while it is strongly affected by NO and NO2 gas molecules. In addition, it is found that the dipole moments of zig-zag CNTs are always higher than the arm-chair CNTs. Therefore, we conclude that the zig-zag carbon nanotubes are more preferred as gas sensors than the arm-chair carbon nanotubes, especially for detecting NO and NO2 gas molecules.

Potential mechanism for the effects of dexamethasone on growth of human melanoma cells in vitro  [PDF]

Abstract: This study deals with the inhibitory effects of dexamethsone on the proliferation of a human melanoma cell line in vitro. A retarded cell proliferation was observed in M-5A cells with the presence of specific high affinity glucocorticoid steroid receptors. There was a correlation between the number of glucococrticoid binding sites and the reduction of cell proliferation in term of reduced plating efficiency. Arrest or accumula- tion of M-5A cells in G1 phase or both in G1 and G2 phase appeared to be involved in the growth inhibitory effect by dexamethsone. The magnitude and duration of cell cycle arrest up to 72 hours were dose dependent. There was a correlation between the duration of the disturbance of the cell cycle progression in M-5A cells after dexamethsone treatment and the inhibition of cell proliferation. Synthesis of receptor protein was not specifically stimulated or inhibited relative to the effect on cellular protein content in general. This may conclude that in the melanoma M-5A cell, death after glucocorticoid treatment is somehow related to the glucocorticoid receptor content and to the disturbance of cell cycle distribution.
Cytotoxic Effect of Dexamethasone Restricted to Noncycling, Early G1 Phase of Melanoma Cells  [PDF]

Abstract: This study deals with the inhibitory effects of dexamethsone on the proliferation of a human melanoma cells after separation into different fractions according to their position in the cell cycle using a gravity sedimentation chamber. Fractions with high percentage of G1 cells were more susceptible to the action of dexamethsone than those with a lower percentage of G1 cells. Dexamethsone stimulated the rate of incorporation of radioactive precursors into acid-precipitable materials of melanoma M-5A cells starting 24 hours after treatment for one hour. Moreover, dexamethsone treatment markedly increased the volume of the M-5A cells with increasing the possibility of stimulating the transcriptional/translational activity in the cells. This study may hopefully stimulate the development of new approaches in systemic and/or regional chemotherapy with malignant melanoma using dexamethsone with other alkylating agents to get synergestic interaction.
The effect of plant defense elicitors on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growth and yield in absence or presence of spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) infestation

Abstract: BackgroundThe common bean plants "Phaseolus vulgaris L." is frequently attacked by the two spotted spider mite (TSSM) Tetranychus urticae, causing a substantial decrease in bean plant growth and yield as well as leaflet structure. Therefore, for commercial bean cultivation in the field controlling TSSM infection is necessary. ResultsFoliar application of salicylic acid (SA) or methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on common bean plants before or after two spotted spider mite infestation proved to be effective in reducing infestations. In most concentrations these elicitors significantly improved common bean plant growth i.e. had a positive effect on plant height, number of branches, shoot dry weight and leaf area per plant and bean yield. SA at 100 mg/l had the strongest positive effect. Moreover, application of elicitors significantly altered leaflet anatomical characters i.e. increased thickness of leaflet blade, thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma as well as thickness of midrib region of the leaflet and changed the dimension of vascular bundles. Alternatively, TSSM infestation had the opposite effect on these leaflet anatomical characters.ConclusionWe conclude that SA or MeJA could be used for controlling TSSM infestation, to improve plant growth and to improve bean yield in the field.
The Limit Behavior Of The Trajectories of Dissipative Quadratic Stochastic Operators on Finite Dimensional Simplex

Abstract: The limit behavior of trajectories of dissipative quadratic stochastic operators on a finite-dimensional simplex is fully studied. It is shown that any dissipative quadratic stochastic operator has either unique or infinitely many fixed points. If dissipative quadratic stochastic operator has a unique point, it is proven that the operator is regular at this fixed point. If it has infinitely many fixed points, then it is shown that $\omega-$ limit set of the trajectory is contained in the set of fixed points.
