Freedom of Conscience is Freedom of Choice: Women’s Reproductive Needs, Rights, and their Therapeutic Implications  [PDF]
Carlos M. Del Rio
Advances in Applied Sociology (AASoci) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/aasoci.2012.23028
Abstract: Using reasonableness, we examine the U.S. Catholic bishops’ opposition to provisions of the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Weaving contributions from theology, philosophy, and jurisprudence, we emphasize the reasonable importance of mental health therapy for women within a relevant Catholic/Christian dialogue, particularly in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on healthcare. We principally identify socially imbedded factors that contribute to ending unwanted pregnancies, and argue that freedom of conscience is indeed freedom of choice within which women’s reproductive needs lie under protections of the U.S. Constitution. We recognize that Catholic tradition originates in the words and behaviors of Jesus. Examining closely these actions toward women, we find no reasonable justification for the bishops’ position against women’s freedom of conscience. We also discovered that revelation does not belong exclusively to the bishops; truth continues to be revealed to all human consciences, and true freedom does not allow for coercion/castigation of dogmatic import. We advocate for women’s ability to openly discuss their struggles to meet their reproductive condundra and to deconstruct their sexual stereotypes in mental health therapy. We provide crucial recommendations to augment choices for women’s reproduction condundra, and incite the need for new epistemic frameworks to address the complexity of female sexuality.
Real-Time Monitoring of Climactic and Geotechnical Variables during Landslides on the Slopes of Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira (São Paulo State, Brazil)  [PDF]
Rodolfo Moreda Mendes, Mário Valério Filho
Engineering (ENG) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/eng.2015.73012
Abstract: The municipalities of Ubatuba, Campos do Jord?o, and S?o José dos Campos are located in the region of S?o Paulo State (Brazil). These municipalities are recognized nationally for having an elevated number of recorded landslides on slopes and embankments. In addition, these municipalities contain multiple areas that are at risk for landslides. Various soil landslides occurred in these municipalities in January 2013, when real-time climactic and geotechnical variables were monitored by automatic rain gauges, humidity sensors and soil temperature and suction devices. The resulting data were used to understand the functions of each variable in the occurrence of land- slides. Analyses of rainfall, humidity and soil temperature were used with field investigations to formulate a hypothesis regarding the predominant rupture mechanism and the role of each monitored variable in the deflagration of the soil landslides that occurred in the three studied municipalities. The geotechnical variable data revealed that both temperature and soil moisture contents played fundamental roles in the deflagration of shallow planar landslides in urban areas. The hourly rain intensity and/or rainfall accumulation for 24 and/or 72 h were responsible for the deflagration of the landslides that occurred in the studied areas, along with the existing anthropic constraints in the risk areas. Significant variations did not occur in the soil suction data during the landslides, principally due to the unsatisfactory sensor precision when reading field suction between 10 and?100 kPA (±25%).
Avalia??o da resistência de 12 híbridos de milho a Pratylenchus brachyurus
Inomoto, Mário M.;
Tropical Plant Pathology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-56762011000500006
Abstract: attack by the root-lesion-nematode pratylenchus brachyurus is, presently, the cause of extensive crop losses in soybean yields in brazil. rotation with maize has been recommended for p. brachyurus management, however only a few resistant maize hybrids are currently available for use in such schemes. two experiments were carried out in greenhouse conditions in order to evaluate the resistance of 12 maize hybrids to p. brachyurus. none of them was entirely resistant to p. brachyurus, but p30k75, dkb-330, ag-7088, dkb-350 and ag-7000 were moderately resistant. thus, the hybrid p30k75, usually considered resistant to p. brachyurus, should be reclassified as moderately resistant. two additional experiments were also performed: one was assessed the effect of two experimental periods (70 and 107 days after inoculation) on nematode reproduction and has indicated that the longer period allowed higher reproduction of p. brachyurus and should be preferred in evaluations of maize resistance to p. brachyurus; and the other showed that p. brachyurus' reproduction was lower in pearl millet 'adr-300' than in maize hybrids and that, therefore, this pearl millet culvivar is more adequate for rotation schemes with soybean in p. brachyurus management than maize.
O risco sistémico
Economia Global e Gest?o , 2010,
Abstract: in a context of widespread ?systemic risk?, agile agents capable of acting effectively in the global market are required. we must anticipate, prevent or overcome, as possible, the adverse events of varying magnitude that are associated with different types of risk, in what concerns people?s safety, environmental degradation, public health or individual income. here we find the need for some kind of regulation of multiple dimensions.
Perspectivas futuras da economia portuguesa: um ensaio exploratório
Economia Global e Gest?o , 2011,
Abstract: in light of the current economic situation in portugal, it is likely that ?social dialogue? will be sacrificed so as to meet the demands of competitiveness which the state will make its priority. equally, the objectives for monetary and financial stability will predominate over those for growth and the reduction of unemployment. and this is a result of the constraints imposed on political power by the leading economic interests in portugal which, in turn, reflect those of the predominant international regulation agencies. nevertheless, a growing valorization of national human resources is possible within the international context. but this means that the state would also need an increasing capacity to contribute, directly and indirectly, to this valorization by following an appropriate reform strategy.
Conhecimento, Inova??o e Território
Finisterra - Revista Portuguesa de Geografia , 2009,
Abstract: the process of globalization and the knowledge-based economy pose new challenges for the development of cities and regions, due to the establishment of new organizational architectures and spatial networks of knowledge. the combination of local and distant networks of knowledge have profound implications on innovation and territorial development, requiring a renewed role in the action of regional and local institutions, traditionally trained to promote local dynamics of innovation. this article specifically discusses the issues of buzz, geographical proximity and agglomeration and distant innovation networks, and provides the theoretical ?background? for the papers published in this special issue on the theme ?knowledge, innovation and territory.?
Sentido e significancia na tradu??o poética
Laranjeira, Mário;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142012000300005
Abstract: when translating a pragmatic text, special attention must given to the concepts, and to the relationship between them, so as to safeguard their communicative function and their tendency to univocality. in poetic translation, there is a predominance of the material elements of the sign and a shift to the higher level of oblique signification, i.e., to the semiotic level of significance, allowing multiple readings by breaking the external referentiality.
Ecletismos em dissenso
Presser, Mário Ferreira;
Estudos Avan?ados , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40142001000100006
Abstract: this article shows some elements to understand the deep dissent among the 'heterodox' brazilian economists from the end of the eighties onwards concerning two crucial themes - stabilization policies and openness to the global economy.

Os comportamentos de risco dos jovens portugueses e a sua mortalidade
Lages,Mário F.;
Análise Social , 2007,
Abstract: this study of mortality in portugal in the last 40 years of the twentieth century seeks to establish the differences between men and women in relation to death, and to identify the behaviours which explain the proportionally higher death rate among men. this trend has been increasing steadily over time, and over an increasing number of years of age, to the extent that young males, from the age of sixteen onwards, no longer fit the ?force? of mortality model which applies for other age groups. the article discusses the possible influence of drug consumption and establishes a correlation between road accidents and mortality. it concludes that this factor alone accounts for a significant part of gender-based differences in mortality rates.
