Abstract: the use of medicinal plants by the general population is an old and still widespread practice, which makes studies of their genotoxicity essential. psidium guajava l. and achillea millefolium l. are examples of plants commonly used in popular medicine. p. guajava l. is indicated for diarrhea and also as an antiseptic, while a. millefolium l. is indicated as an analgesic, antispasmodic, digestive, diuretic, antiseptic, astringent, emollient, wound healer and hemorrhoid medication. the aim of this study was to determine the effects of the infusions of these two plant species on chromosomes and the cell cycle. leaves from the plants were used to prepare infusions, in the same manner as teas, but at two different concentrations. allium cepa l. root-tip cells (p. guajava l. - 2.62 and 26.2 mg/ml, and a. millefolium l. - 3.5 and 35.0 mg/ml) and wistar rat bone marrow cells (p. guajava l. - 2.62 and 26.2 mg/100g body weight, and a. millefolium l. - 3.5 and 35.0 mg/100g body weight) were used as in vivo plant and animal test systems, respectively. human peripheral blood lymphocytes (p. guajava l. - 0.262 and 2.62 mg/ml culture medium, and a. millefolium l. - 0.35 and 3.5 mg/ml culture medium) were used as in vitro test system. the p. guajava l. infusion at the higher concentration caused a statistically significant inhibition of cellular division in the onion root-tip cells, not observed in onion root-tip cells treated with a. millefolium l. no statistically significant alterations were found, as compared to untreated controls, in either the cell cycle or the number of chromosome alterations, after treatments with either plant, in rat cells or in cultured human lymphocytes. these results regarding the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of these plants provide valuable information about the safety of using them as therapeutic agents.

Abstract: this work had, as objective, to verify the influence of refrigeration temperature and bunch age on the conservation and post-harvest quality of the 'prata an?' banana produced in the north of minas gerais, looking towards exportation. 'prata an?' banana tree fruits were used originating from the municipal district of nova porteirinha, mg. the crop was harvested in the 16th, 18th and 20th weeks after the floral emission. from the clusters picked, the second bunches was used, separated in clusters with 5 fruits, washed and weighed (18 kg). soon after, the fruits were wrapped with polyethylene packing of low density with 50mm of thickness under partial vacuum, conditioned in cardboard boxes and distributed on palets. after being wrapped and put on paletes, the fruits were transported to epamig/ctnm, where they were stored in refrigeration chambers at 10 and 12oc with a relative humidity of 95% for a period of 35 days, being analyzed before and after the refrigeration. the storage of 'prata an?' bananas, coming from 16, 18 and 20 week-old bunches, for 35 days at temperatures of 10 and 12oc of did not promote "chilling injury" in the fruits. the 10oc temperature was more effective in preventing the evolution of the coloration of the peel of bananas coming from 18 week-old bunches than the 12oc temperature, while temperatures of 10 and 12oc were equally efficient in the contention of the change of color of bananas coming from 16 week-old bunches. fruits coming from 20 week-old bunches matured non-uniformly during refrigerated storage.

Abstract: there are still controversies about the treatment of associated coronary artery disease and carotid artery obstruction. between 1979 and 1994, 10940 patients were operated on for myocardial revascularization. combined operations (myocardial revascularization and carotid endarterectomy) were done in 46 (0.43%) patients, during the same period. patients age ranged from 48 to 76 years with an average of 65.2 yrs; 80.4% were male; 23 had had previous myocardial infarction. associated diseases were diabetes mellitus in 10 patients, chronic renal insufficiency in 5; 29 were in functional class 111 or iv for angina; 4 patients had congestive cardiac insufficiency: left main carotid obstruction, and in 4 of them one carotid artery was completaly obstructed; 23 patients had had transient cerebral ischemic attack and 2 had had stroke with sequelae. hospital mortality was 8.6% (4/46). permanent stroke did not occur in the operative period; 3 of the 4 deaths occurred in patients 70 years or older. carotid endarterectomy was done just before cardiopulmonary bypass in 42 patients and in 4 patients with one of the carotid arteries occluded, done after cardiopulmonary bypass was established and the patient temperature was 25oc. considering that no patient had perioperative stroke, we think that this strategy is adequate for this association of diseases.

Abstract: the variety of problems related to the so-called hazardous patterns of alcohol use make the latter a prominent public health concern. screening instruments associated with brief interventions in primary care provide one of the frequently recommended secondary prevention strategies. the objective of this study was to assess the implementation of this strategy as a routine practice in primary health care services in the city of juiz de fora, minas gerais state, brazil. a qualitative design was employed, including the application of semi-structured interviews for managers and health care professionals in the city's public health system, in addition to content analysis and participant observation. results point to difficulties in the effective implementation of such routines both by managers and health care professionals. health care professionals limit the approach to alcohol-dependent patients and demonstrate lack of motivation for preventive work. health services managers experience difficulties in the organization and administration of such instruments, despite affirming their interest in the project.
