Abstract: Several studies have shown a major development in height and cannon bone circumference in foals from birth to weaning and from different breeds. However, in Brazil, there is little information about foal development. For this reason, this study has used data on foals from seven different farms in Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil, where horses have a major economic importance. The aim of this study was to compare foal’s development from four breeds and to develop a regression formula in order to estimate such development. It was used data from 210 suckling foals (Arabians n = 18, Campolina n = 86, Mangalarga Marchador n = 42 and Quarter Horses n = 64), raised in similar management practices. Their height at withers, heart girth, and cannon bone girth were measured monthly from birth to weaning. Data we reanalyzed by ANOVA and Tukey Test, with P established in 5%. The highest mean of height at withers was observed in the Arabian foals, and it was similar to Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador foals. The last breed presented a higher percentage of gain in height (~36%) and higher heart girth. On the other hand, Campolina foals had the highest mean of cannon bone girth. There was a significant interaction between breed and development phase in heart and cannon bone girths. All regression for mulas obtained from this data was very significant, and it was showed that they can predict height at withers in the four breeds studied. Heart and cannon bone girths showed medium value of R2 and large significance. It is important to highlight that fetal programing produces significant impact on foal development, even after weaning. So, this study would have observed some more changes if its scope had been extended beyond this phase.

Abstract:

The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that glutathione peroxidase, uric acid, and a number of hematological biomarkers do not vary in adult mares, over a 24-hour period. Seven adult (age 10 ± 6 yrs; weight 370 ± 30 kg) Arabian Purebred mares were used. Blood samples were collected every two hours, except during the period after-meals, when samples were collected every 30 minutes, totaling four samples in two hours. These samples were used to analyze glutathione peroxidase (GPx), uric acid (UA), glucose (GLU), total plasma protein (TPP), red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HB), hematocrit (HT), red cell distribution width (RDW), white blood cells (WBC) and lymphocytes (LYM). One-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine significant differences. Tukey’s test was used for multiple comparisons between the averages. Ρ values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Antioxidant biomarkers GPx and UA, as well as hematological biomarkers TPP, RBC, HB and HT exhibited a diurnal rhythm that was not affected by food ingestion, while RDW-SD, RDW-CV, WBC and LYM did not present a statistically significant change in the same period.

Biotemas , 2010,
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the incidence of fungi in stored seeds of Jatropha curcas. The research was carried out at Cryogenic/UFCG, Sanity/UFPB and Cotton/Embrapa. The material for analysis showed an 8% water level, and 200 seeds were stored for treatment in cryogenic containers with nitrogen in the vapor and liquid phases. Four periods of crioconservation (0, 30, 60 and 90 days), were employed. After each period, the seeds were tested for sanity (Blotter test) and germination. Superficial disinfestation, was carried out and seeds were distributed in Petri dishes, for incubation at 25 ± 2oC, over a period of 7 days. The evaluation of the incidence of fungi was carried out in a stereoscopic microscope with observation of fungal structures, and values were expressed as percentages of seeds with fungus. The statistical experiment was completely randomized with temperature x days of storage. Analysis of variance was conducted and the means were compared by Tukey’s test at 5%. After 30 days of cryogenic storage, a greater incidence of Aspergillus sp., Cladosporium sp. and Fusarium sp. was detected. It was concluded that crioconservation at cryogenic temperatures did not reduce the incidence of fungus on Jatropha curcas seeds. The physiological quality was preserved during the cryoconservation.

Abstract: TEMA: mastiga o e postura de cabe a e pesco o. SUBJECT: head and neck chewing and posture. PURPOSE: to carry out a systematic review with the purpose of observing if there is a reciprocal interference between the masticatory function and of head and neck posture. CONCLUSION: there is reciprocity between the chewing function and the alterations in the head and neck regions, although there are doubts about which region primarily promotes changes in the other one. Thus, it is important to carry on more studies using more targeted and measurable assessment methods for each region in order to provide more accurate data.

Abstract: this study evaluated the influence of 3 different photopolymerization sources on enamel shear bond strength after bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide. seventy-two incisive bovine teeth were randomly divided into 6 groups (n=12) according to bleaching treatment and photopolymerization source used: g1 - bleached / halogen lamp; g2 - not bleached / halogen lamp (control); g3 - bleached / light-emitting diodes (led); g4 - not bleached / light-emitting diodes (led) (control); g5 - bleached / xenon plasma arc; g6 - not bleached / xenon plasma arc (control). experimental groups were exposed to bleaching agent for a period of 14 days, with a daily contact of 4 h and then stored in artificial saliva at 37oc. control groups were stored in artificial saliva at 37oc for same period of bleaching treatment. procedures for bonding composite resin to enamel were carried out according to manufacturer instructions. after storage in distilled water at 37oc for 24 hours, all samples were submitted to shear bond strength test. g2 had the highest mean value (14.86 mpa) while g5 had the lowest (12.32 mpa). the comparison of groups by 2-way anova showed that there were no significant differences for either of the factors considered in this study (bleaching and photopolymerization source), hence the interaction between these factors. it was therefore possible to conclude that neither enamel bleaching nor the photopolymerization source used had any influence on enamel shear bond strength.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to calculate adjustment factors for milk and fat yield according to the cow age and calving season, for holstein breeds herds from minas gerais state. the statistical analyses were made by means of mixed models, using restricted maximum likelihood in an animal model. the fixed effects were herd-year, genetic composition and age classes-calving season, and as random effects of animal (cow, sire and dam) and error terms. records used in the analysis were 49,666 lactations of 26,822 cows, being 17,354 from grades and 9,468 from purebred cows. twenty-one age classes were made; with the small one constituted by cows that calving under 24 months and the large one by cow with more than 99 months of age, per six calving seasons. the adjustment factors attained for milk production, were which larger than for fat factors, tended to be smaller for purebred cows than the correspondent values estimated for grade cows. the average milk and fat production milk was higher for the productions beginning in the season corresponding to the dry season, mainly for cows with more than 30 months of age. the differences found among the estimated factors for the dry season in relation to the rainy season were minimal, not overpass 8%. the milk and fat productions were higher for younger cows.
Detailing the Structure of Liquid THF Based on an EPSR Study  [PDF]
Alexandre Borges, Jo?o M. M. Cordeiro
Computational Chemistry (CC) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/cc.2015.31001
Abstract: The structure of pure liquid tetrahydrofuran (THF) has been investigated via Monte Carlo simulations in the wake of a previous Empirical Potential Structure Refinement (EPSR) study on that liquid (Bowron, D.T.; Finney, J.L.; Soper, A.K. (2006) J. Am. Chem. Soc., 128, 5119). The molecules are allatoms rigid structures and the intermolecular potential used is described for the classical 6-12 Lennard-Jones plus Coulomb in the NPT ensemble at 1 atm and 25°C. THF is a poorly structured liquid. Typical preferred orientation of molecules has been explored and calculations shown different types of molecular pairs exist concurrently in the liquid. The geometry of those pairs was deeply investigated and its influence in the liquid structure discussed. The lack of molecular organization in the liquid is closely related to the existence of that diversity of molecular pairs. Its geometry changes from antiparallel up to T-like depending on the distance between the molecules in the pairs.

Abstract: in the present work three ferroin reagents were studied for the simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of iron and copper: 1,10-phenanthroline, 2,2'-bipyridine and 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine. effect of ph, conditions, order reagent addition, interferences, amount of reagents, lineal range, sensitivity and stability of each system were compared. the 2,4,6-tri(2-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine can be used for determination of iron in the presence of copper with a detection limit of 5 μg l-1 and coefficient of variation of 2.0%; however it was not possible to determine directly copper in the presence of iron with this reagent. 1,10-phenanthroline can be used for simultaneous determination of the metallic ions with detection limits of 7 and 8 mg l-1 and coefficients of variation of 1.8 and 2.3% in the determination of iron and copper, respectively. the results showed also that 2,2'-bipyridine can be used for simultaneous determination of the metallic ions with detection limits of 11 and 32 μg l-1 and coefficients of variation of 1.9 and 2.5% in the determination of iron and copper, respectively. the reagents were used for spectrophotometric determination of iron and copper in ethanol fuel.
