Scheffer, Mário;Bahia, Lígia;
Interface - Comunica??o, Saúde, Educa??o , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-32832011000300030
Abstract: the brazilian legislation regulates the financial donations from private sources to both majoritarian and proportional election candidates. based on approaches found in the literature on the party-system structure and on the relationships between the legislative and executive, this study uses the categories political representation and interests to analyze the information on donating health insurance companies and the receiving candidacies. the donating health plan companies were duly identified, as well as the resources donated to candidates. comparing these data allows an assessment of the health plan companies' interests projected in the legislative power, but does not authorize the establishment of causal relationships between donors and the representatives' performance. the presence in the electoral dispute of health plan companies from every region in the country and the tendency of donations to go to parties on the right of the political spectrum are the major findings of this paper.
De pés descal?os no ciberespa?o: tecnologia e cultura no cotidiano de um grupo social on-line
Guimar?es Jr., Mário J. L.;
Horizontes Antropológicos , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832004000100006
Abstract: sometimes categories employed analytically are drawn from their "lay" use with a lack of further reflection on their appropriateness. the range of categories based in the distinction between technology and society is just an example of these phenomena. this paper brings to attention some issues regarding the analytical value of distinctions such as between culture and technology, taking avatars, virtual bodies employed at social environments in cyberspace, as an example. the ethnography of two aspects of an on-line social group illustrate how users of avatar-related technologies creatively shape those technologies features in order to made them suitable to their local cultural contexts. furthermore, the relationship between users and developers of such technologies reveal in what extent the boundaries between technology and culture are, indeed, rather blurred.

Abstract: . Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2014.49054
Abstract:

The degradation of industrial residues is of great importance for the maintenance of the environment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to verify the proteases production for bacteria of the gender isolated Bacillus of soil. The samples of skin residue were collected in industries of the area west of Santa Catarina, using residue of skin rude swine and residue of skin processed swine. The verification of the biotechnological potential consisted of the use of these residues in middle of culture and inoculation of the respective species of bacteria. The results were more expressive in the samples of skin processed swine, where it showed a degradation average around 43.55% (p/p). While, in the samples of residue of skin rude swine, an average of degradation of 20.60% (p/p) happened. In this way, the residue of skin processed swine is more sensitive than the catalytic activity of the bacterial enzymes.

Effects of different nitrogen sources on growth, chlorophyll concentration, nitrate reductase activity and carbon and nitrogen distribution in Araucaria angustifolia
Garbin, Mário L.;Dillenburg, Lúcia R.;
Brazilian Journal of Plant Physiology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1677-04202008000400005
Abstract: the southern brazilian highland plateau is a mosaic of two contrasting plant communities, araucaria forests and grasslands, which differ in the relative abundances and spatial patterns of soil nitrate and ammonium. however, we still do not know the inorganic n preferences of one key species in this mosaic, araucaria angustifolia, the dominant tree species in the araucaria forests and an important tree species invading the adjacent grasslands. growth responses measured in a greenhouse study demonstrated that the species prefers nh4+ over no3- as an inorganic n source. when provided alone, no3- induced n deficiency symptoms: increases in root: shoot ratio, root branching and leaf mass per area, thickening of the shoot apexes and decreased mass-based chlorophyll and n concentrations of the young leaves. nitrate-based nutrition also affected the whole plant n and carbon (c) distribution: young leaves accumulated less n and showed a larger c:n ratio than mature leaves. the nitrate reductase activity (nra) followed the pattern of root: shoot partitioning expected for temperate climate conifers (activity concentrated in roots). however, the presence of nra even under sole nh4+ nutrition indicates that plants may show constitutive levels of the enzyme, or that low levels of no3- (possibly formed by contamination of the growth media) can induce leaf nra. we suggest that a. angustifolia has ammonium as a preferential inorganic n source, and that this preference may favor a more successful establishment in grassland than in forest areas.

It has been reported the existence of an association between Chronic Viral Hepatitis C and type 2 Diabetes mellitus, probably as a manifestation of the chronic hepatic disease and/or one of its extra-hepatic manifestations. Recently, it has been reported the appearance of type 1 Diabetes mellitus after treatment with interferon-alpha, associated with the appearance of anti-pancreatic antibodies or with an increase in their titration. We pretend to illustrate a severe case of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus, 5 months after combined treatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin. Our objective is to enhance the importance of evaluate the risk of developing diabetes mellitus with the treatment.
Forma??o de cardumes por Astyanax altiparanae (Teleostei: Characidae) no Rio Congonhas, Paraná, Brasil
Suzuki, Fábio M.;Orsi, Mário L.;
Revista Brasileira de Zoologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-81752008000300026
Abstract: the schooling behavior of astyanax altiparanae garutti & britski, 2000, was observed in a subtributary of the mid-paranapanema river from january 1998 to february 1999. this species was shown to form two types of school: large schools, with approximately 50 individuals, were formed by smaller specimens located near the margin, around aquatic vegetation; and small schools (around 15 individuals), composed of larger specimens living preferentially in areas of deep water. some behavioral variations in organization and localization were observed between these two groups, depending on the type of conducted activity, such as displacement frequency and foraging. the observed behavior of these schools when under threat underscores the idea that schooling is also an antipredation tactic.
Three inoculation methods for screening corn germplasm to white ear rot resistance
Mário, Justino L.;Reis, Erlei M.;Juliatti, Fernando C.;
Tropical Plant Pathology , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-56762011000600004
Abstract: three inoculation methods (natural, spraying and pouring) of stenocarpella maydis in corn cobs were compared for their efficiency in screening corn genotypes for resistance to this pathogen. a total of six corn hybrids were inoculated with each method. natural infection, spraying a conidial suspension on stigmas, or pouring it directly onto corn ears resulted in 21.02%, 39.78%, and 44.32% of infected ears. the high disease pressure provided by artificial inoculation of s. maydis allowed for a better differentiation between resistant and susceptible corn hybrids. the pouring technique was the easiest to carry out and better than the other methods under field conditions.
Cover crops for reniform nematode suppression in cotton: greenhouse and field evaluations
Asmus, Guilherme L.;Inomoto, Mário M.;Cargnin, Roseane A.;
Tropical Plant Pathology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1982-56762008000200001
Abstract: two greenhouse and one field experiment were carried out to evaluate the reaction of cover crops to reniform nematode, rotylenchulus reniformis, and their effect on nematode populations in a naturally infested soil (2,359 nematodes/200cm3) and on cotton yield. oil radish (raphanus sativus), mulato grass (brachiaria ruziziensis x b. brizantha), forage sorghum (sorghum bicolor), tef (eragrostis tef), foxtail millet (setaria italica), algerian (avena byzantina) and black (a. strigosa) oats, pearl millet (pennisetum glaucum), and finger millet (eleusine coracana) were determined to be poor hosts for r. reniformis in greenhouse experiments. grain amaranth (amaranthus cruentus) and quinoa (chenopodium quinoa) were good hosts to r. reniformis. in the field, lower nematode densities were observed after mulato grass, oil radish and forage sorghum. higher cotton fiber yields were obtained from plots cultivated with mulato grass or sorghum during the winter compared to clean fallow. cotton yield was inversely correlated with both reproduction factor (p < 0.05) of the nematode on the winter cover crops and population of r. reniformis at cotton planting (p < 0.01).
