Horizontes Antropológicos , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-71832004000100006
Abstract: sometimes categories employed analytically are drawn from their "lay" use with a lack of further reflection on their appropriateness. the range of categories based in the distinction between technology and society is just an example of these phenomena. this paper brings to attention some issues regarding the analytical value of distinctions such as between culture and technology, taking avatars, virtual bodies employed at social environments in cyberspace, as an example. the ethnography of two aspects of an on-line social group illustrate how users of avatar-related technologies creatively shape those technologies features in order to made them suitable to their local cultural contexts. furthermore, the relationship between users and developers of such technologies reveal in what extent the boundaries between technology and culture are, indeed, rather blurred.

It has been reported the existence of an association between Chronic Viral Hepatitis C and type 2 Diabetes mellitus, probably as a manifestation of the chronic hepatic disease and/or one of its extra-hepatic manifestations. Recently, it has been reported the appearance of type 1 Diabetes mellitus after treatment with interferon-alpha, associated with the appearance of anti-pancreatic antibodies or with an increase in their titration. We pretend to illustrate a severe case of new-onset type 1 diabetes mellitus, 5 months after combined treatment with interferon-alpha and ribavirin. Our objective is to enhance the importance of evaluate the risk of developing diabetes mellitus with the treatment.
Continuous time stochastic models for vehicular traffic on highways
Rodrigues, áttila L.;Oliveira, Mário J. de;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332004000300007
Abstract: we have simulated a continuous time version of the nagel-schreckenberger model of vehicular traffic on highways and calculated the flux as a function of vehicle density. in the low density regime the flux increases linearly with density but becomes a power law when velocities are allowed to increase without bounds. we have simulated also a modified version in which the state of a vehicle depends on the velocity of the vehicle moving ahead. this model displays a phase transition from a state with nonzero flux to a jammed state at a critical density which is strictly less than the closed-packed density. we also study the relationship of this model with self-organized criticality.

Abstract:

Glutamate excitotoxicity has been postulated as a putative mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, a disease that can cause retinal cell damage. Thus, the modulation of glutamatergic parameters is a putative therapeutic target to prevent excitotoxic retinal injury. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids (w3) in the retinal glutamate transport system in basal and ischemic conditions. Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: w3 diet (w3 group) and w3 deficient-diet (D group). Their pups, at 60 days old, were used for the experiments. Retinal ischemia, a mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, was induced by high intraocular pressure (HIOP, 140 180 mmHg for 45 min) to impair retinal blood flow. Analyses were performed 7 days after ischemia. The D group showed a decreased glutamate uptake in basal conditions and after HIOP when compared to the w3 group. After HIOP, there was a decrease in glutamate uptake in the D group that was not observed in the w3 group (p < 0.005). Concerning glutamate transporters, the w3 group presented higher levels of GLT-1 compared to the D group in basal and ischemic conditions. After HIOP, EAAC1 was increased in both groups, while GLT-1 increased only in the D group, compared to basal levels. GLAST and EAAT5 presented no alterations. The modulation of the glutamatergic system by dietary w3 fatty acids points to a potential mechanism by which w3 PUFAs exert beneficial effects in the retina.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2014.515245
Abstract:

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effects of different phosphorus levels (0.05, 0.5, 1 and 2 mM) under nitrogen metabolism and the essential oil profile of menthol mint (Mentha arvensis L.). The relationship between the leaf maturity and the essential oil profile was also explored. The experiment was conducted in a hydroponic system located in a grow chamber during 41 days and after the harvest, nitrate reductase activity, and the -N, amino-N, and soluble sugars levels of each plant part were evaluated. Also the essential oil from young leaves (6th to 8th node) and adult leaves (3rd to the 5th node) was analyzed. An uptake mechanism related to the increase in fresh weight of the roots was promoted with the use of low P levels (0.05 and 0.50 mmol·L-1). With 1 mmol·L-1 P plants showed in all parts an increased nitrate reductase activity and high levels of nitrate and amino-N in leaves. Plants submitted to the lowest P level (0.05 mmol·L-1) presented high levels of menthol. In leaves from 6th to 8th node (mature leaves) menthol level was approximately 87% of the essential oil however leaves from the 3rd to the 5th node (young leaves) showed high levels of pulegone, that can be toxic for humans. The results indicate that the essential oil quality in menthol mint is influenced by the leaf maturity and the P levels. Also it was showed that the oil extracted from mature leaves of plants under low P levels has the best commercial

Abstract: Four genetically contrasting rice varieties (IAC-47, Bico Ganga, Arroz de Revenda and Manteiga) according to Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis were assessed regarding expression of the genes OsNRT1.1, OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2 and the nitrate uptake kinetics parameters (Km and Vmax). Up to 250-fold increases in the induction of gene expression after nitrate resupply were observed for the high-affinity transporter (OsNRT2.1 and OsNRT2.2). However, no significant variations in Vmax among the varieties were obtained. The lower value of Km of the IAC-47 cultivar in relation to the Arroz de Revenda variety suggests a greater role of high-affinity transporter genes. These results indicate that closer attention should be paid to the expression levels of these genes in selecting varieties aiming to enhance nitrogen uptake efficiency.

Abstract: the wine quality depends on the quality grapes produced. actual micrometeorological conditions occurring in the time frame of grapevine growth and development will impact berry quality, especially from berry set to the harvest. soil-water dynamics plays an important role on the quality grape must achieved at the vinification. in the s?o paulo state (brasil) in the regions of greatest clustering of vintners, there is a marked rainy time-frame from november to february, which matches with the vine time-cycle when the majority of grape varieties are in the berry set to berry maturation bracket, which negatively affects the grape and wine quality in most of the harvests. in contrast, for the same region there is more favorable condition in the autumn/winter time, which has a promise heat summation for proper grape growing, characterized by a long time-frame of low pluviometric rate (april to october). an experiment was conducted aiming at study the cultivation o grapevines in both described ''climatic windows''?. physico-chemical composition of and microclimatic conditions for berry maturation during 2008 to 2010 were analysed. results showed that the studied grape varieties developed better berry quality potential when cultivated in the autumn/winter time and this effect was more pronounced for vitis vinifera.
