Revista árvore , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622006000100009
Abstract: the objective of this work was to determine the economic rotations for a forest stand taking into considereation only one harvest, infinite harvests and a regulated forest using mathematical models, as well as comparing them through the marginal analysis of optimality conditions. to validate the model and to verify the magnitude of the effect a study case of a forest project, with real values of production, costs, revenues and discounting rate, was used. the results indicated that the models were efficient to determine the economic rotation and that the rotation of the stand for one cut, infinite cuts and for the regulated forest were respectively 6.5, 5.5 and 5 years. the soil expectation value (sev) for the regulated forest was smaller than the sev of the stand due toimposed regulations on the forest management.

Abstract: forest certification has expanded in several states in brazil both in the form of forest plantations and native forests. the main objective of this study was to analyze the contribution that certification of forest plantations has in the protection of native forests in brazilian states through the systems fsc and cerflor. it was consulted the public summaries of certified forest management units in the brazilian states, both concerning the certification of forest plantations and native forests. it was searched information on the total certified area of forest management unit and for the forest plantations, the effective area of plantations, the area of forest protection and forest area assigned for other uses. the total area of certified native forest is 2.78 million hectares whereas the area of forest plantations is a little over four million hectares. areas protected in the state of bahia are the largest by cerflor (46.35%) and the second largest by fsc (40.67%), whereas the smallest areas assigned for this use are in the state of s?o paulo, with 23.33% by cerflor and 21.02% by the fsc. states in the amazon region assign a higher percentage of area for forest conservation. it is concluded that enterprises which have certification of forest plantations have an important role in forest conservation because since in many cases, those enterprises comply with a percentage much higher than that required by law. to choose one or other certification system does not influence the degree of demand with respect to the conservation of native species.

CERNE , 2007,
Abstract: The goal of the present work was to evaluate the economic viability of producing charcoal in eucalypt stands, indeteministic and risk conditions. In order to do this, the costs of a forest project were defined, as well as the production of charcoalunder the management regime with three rotations per cicle. The risk analysis was carried out through the Monte Carlo method, usingthe @RISK software. Through the deterministic analysis, the economic indicators were positive (viable), and the risk analysisindicates that there is a probability of 12 % for obtaining negative values, namely, for the project to be economicaly inviable. It wasdemonstrated that the inclusion of the risk analysis in the analysis of a project economic rentability offers greater safety for inferenceabout the economic indicators.

Revista árvore , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622006000600015
Abstract: the present work aimed at using the model of logistic performance evaluation of productive chains (adelcap) centered in the operational cycle time elements of wood transport, seeking to optimize the resources, to guarantee a continuous flow of supplying and to assure an appropriate volume of wood entrance in the industry. the wood transport cycle time consists of wood loading, wood hauling, wood unloading, garage and wood unhauling. a cellulose producing company in the state of minas gerais was used as case study. initially, the logistics and supply chain of the company was diagnosed to know the main existent obstacles along the chain; defining their preliminary vary key parameters, based on the characterization of their structure and operation; finally, the main directors that condition their efficiency and competitiveness were identified and evaluated. the model of chain logistics of wood transport used the temporal petri net for working with two times that correspond to a sensitization period. their properties are as follows: simulation (working with hypothetical scenarios), dynamic (exit values depend on the entrance values); determinist (exit variables are not random); continuous (time is measured by real numbers); and temporal in the transitions. scenarios, with the same variations in the two wood-producing regionals were created, and simulations with the jarp and arp software were carried out to evaluate the operational and economic performance. the variations applied to the scenarios were: improvement of the forest roads; increase of loader numbers, and improvement of garage efficiency. for both regionals, the scenario with the three variations (scenario 7) presented the largest reduction in cycle times of wood transport in relation to the current situation, being 19.24% and 21.48%, respectively, for rio doce and cocais das estrelas. the analyzed operational cost is the value paid for the freight, not including the investment costs. both regionals, rio doce

Abstract: soil erosion causes extensive damage to society and environment through the loss of agricultural soils and the consequent degradation of water resources. based on this context, the the brazilian national water agency - ana developed the "water provider program". erosion reduction was estimated for the agrosilvopasture activity in the agroforestry unit of "companhia mineira de metais", in paracatu, using the methodology of the "programa do produtor de água". an analysis of the economic contribution of the revenue generated through the monetary compensation provided by the "water provider program" was also performed. the results pointed to a 78.52% of erosion and sediment abatement. this environmental service would therefore provide the company for an additional income of r$ 100,00.ha-1.year-1. the economic viability analysis pointed to an increase of 27.7% for npv and eav and of 7.0% for irr of agrosilvopasture system, assuming the implementation of "water provider program".

Revista árvore , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622004000600010
Abstract: the present work deals with the comparative study of three methodologies used for calculating the operational cost of forest transport vehicles such as: fao - north america; fao/ece/kwf e battistella /scania. for this the, bitrem truck was considered as it is one of the most used for forest load transport in brazil. the two first methods had the operational cost calculated per effective hour of work (eh), and the latter had the cost calculated per kilometer (km). thus, for this method, a factor to convert kilometer cost to cost per effective hours of work (eh) was used. the operational cost, for fao - north america and fao/ece/kwf, was obtained by the sum of the following costs: machine (fixed and variable costs); administrative (administration cost) and worker (workmanship hand cost). for the battistella/scania method, the operacional cost was obtained by the sum of machine and administrative costs. the fao method - north america was the most expressive in terms of operational cost (uss 50,47/he). this method was the most indicated for the case in study, due mainly to the large approximation in relation to the real cost. the machine costs represented more than 85% of the total cost in all methodologies, with the variable cost standing out, due the high fuel cost. the operational costs presented distinct values, probably due to the fact that these methods present different formulas for the same cost.

Revista árvore , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-67622008000600019
Abstract: this work aimed to specify and estimate the brazilian import demand for natural rubber from 1964 to 2005. the variables applied to explain import demand were: natural rubber import price, gnp per capita, exchange nominal rate (r$/us$), "overnight" interest rate, natural rubber domestic production and trend. the estimates showed that the variables significantly affected the brazilian import demand for natural rubber. the results indicated that the brazilian import demand for natural rubber is inelastic in relation to import price and income; little sensitive to variations in import price, exchange nominal rate (r$/us$), income and "overnight" interest rate but it is sensitive to domestic rubber production variations , in the short and long runs; and that natural rubber is a regular commodity.

Abstract: companies have been witnessing major changes in their environment and environmental models have been developed aiming to improve their strategic planning. the objective of this study was to examine the environmental approach adopted by companies within the pulp and paper, metallurgical and sugar and alcohol sectors, in order to evaluate their environmental performances. the analysis was based on a matrix which relates managerial functions with a set of environmental approaches and performance indicators, classifying the company environmental performance as weak, moderate or strong. the managerial functions approached in this model are: management (general, legal affairs, finance, human resources and purchasing); product and process development; production and maintenance; and marketing. the analyzed indicators include: international insertion; capital origin and location. the pulp and paper and metallurgical companies obtained average scores of 54.5 and 51.56 points, respectively, being classified as having a strong environmental performance. on the other hand, the sugar and alcohol companies obtained average score of 46 points, being classified as moderate in environmental performance. the high level of environmental performance of pulp and paper and metallurgical companies can be attributed to the following factors: larger international insertion, presence of foreign capital in controlling shares, performance in the international market and company location near large population centers. pulp and paper and mainly sugar and alcohol companies are less efficient in meeting the requirements of the environmental legislation, particularly those related to the conformity of permanent protected areas and legal reserves.
