Asano, Márcia Emiko;Osaki, Midori Hentona;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492006000400016
Abstract: purpose: to assess the health-related quality of life in blepharoptosis patients and the impact after surgical management on their quality of life. methods: twenty-one patients with congenital or acquired blepharoptosis completed a questionnaire which was adapted from the visual function questionnaire (vfq), before and after surgical management. results: mean preoperative score was 74 and mean postoperative score was 81 and there was a statistically significant difference between mean pre- and postoperative scores of 7 (p=0.004). there was a statistically significant difference only for the mental health subdomain (p=0.001) in the evaluation of the questions (a=0.002) and subdomains (a=0.004). conclusion: the quality of life in blepharoptosis patients was significantly better after surgical management in the assessment using the vfq. the outcomes emphasize the need for of using questionnaires designed specifically for this disease.
Síndrome do nevus organóide: relato de caso
Ballalai, Priscilla Luppi;Hirashima, Denise Emiko;Pólvora, Rafael Piuma;Rigueiro, Moacyr;Lowen, Márcia;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492001000400016
Abstract: the authors present a case of a child with organoid nevus syndrome, characterized by epibulbar choristoma in the right eye, jadassohn's nevus sebaceous in the scalp and arachnoid cist. the pathology of the ocular lesion revealed a mixture of ectodermal and mesodermal elements, leding to the rare diagnosis of epibulbar complex choristoma.the syndrome is rarely described in the ophthalmologic literature. some considerations are made regarding ophthalmologic and systemic associations.

Abstract: few cases of dermatosis neglecta have been reported in the medical literature, although the diagnosis is well-known to dermatologists. recognizing this condition avoids unnecessary, aggressive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. this case report discusses two cases of this condition in female patients in whom the dermatosis developed as a result of deliberate or unconscious neglect of personal hygiene.

Abstract: a classificatory system of nursing practice in collective health (international classification of nursing practices in collective health? - classifica??o internacional das práticas de enfermagem em saúde coletiva?) has been adopted in curitiba's primary care health services as part of its policy. this study, descriptive and exploratory, seeks to show nursing's contributions to epidemiological profile improvement in children's health. the data was collected through the reports about nursing diagnoses from the municipal computer database, and was analyzed using the nursing praxical intervention theory in collective health. the results have shown that children's health profiles in this municipality are better than in the remainder of the country. nursing practices, qualified by using nursing diagnoses and a classificatory system, have allowed assessing improvement in health-illness processes. finally nursing has been able to identify health needs and diagnoses, strengths and impairments of health-illness processes.

Abstract: there is great concern at present over the improvement in cytopathology diagnosis for hpv, and for this reason we have been studying the introduction of non-classic morfologic approaches, bearing in mind the high frequency of this viral infection as well as its carcinogenic potential. the object of this work is to make a new reading of 41 positive cases for hpv by pcr, introducing non-classic approaches, where as the initial ones were mad simply based on the classic ones. the most frequently observed cytopathology approaches were the non-classic, being two or many nucleuses the most frequent, with n = 37 (90.24%), followed by hypercromatic nucleus with n = 35 (85.36%) and nucleus in blot, with n = 24 (58.54%). in relation to the classic approaches, diskeratosis was observed in n = 17 cases (41.46%) and koilocytosis n= 10 (24.35%), representing the fourth and ninth approaches in numeric order of observation. it was also made clear that the more advanced the lesion diagnosed by the citopatology, the lower the frequency of classic criteria and the higher the frequency of non-classic criteria. after inclusion of the non classic approaches, diagnosis of hpv rose from 24.39% of the cases to 75.61% of the cases, being 40.00% of ascus and 100.00% of nic i, nic ii, nic iii and cervical cancers became positive for the virus. this fact is of the highest importance for the improvement of the cytopathology services used to trace cervical cancers. even so, the only normal case for the cytology, the two inflammatory cases, the four cases of scamous metaplasia and the three cases out of five cases of ascus remained negative for hpv, representing false-negative tests. that is quite preoccupying since, once patient are carriers of virus, independent of the clinical state, they haver higher probabilities of developing precursor lesions and even cervical cancers.

Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822011000500011
Abstract: introduction: the production of anti-cryptosporidium polyclonal antibodies and its use in direct immunofluorescence assays to determine the presence of cryptosporidium in water are described in the present work. methods: two rabbits were immunized with soluble and particulate antigens from purified cryptosporidium oocysts. the sera produced were prepared for immunoglobulin g extraction, which were then purified and conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate (fitc). slides containing known amounts of oocysts were prepared to determine the sensitivity of the technique. to test the specificity, slides containing giardia duodenalis cysts were prepared. results: the conjugate was successfully used in water samples experimentally contaminated with cryptosporidium oocysts, and it was possible to detect up to five oocysts/spot, corresponding to contamination of 250 oocysts/ml. conclusions: the three immunizations performed in the rabbits were enough to produce antibodies against cryptosporidium, the standard direct immunofluorescence assay permitted the detection of five oocysts in 20% of the samples, and no cross-reaction with giardia duodenalis cysts occurred.

Abstract: the motivations for writing this article were the difficulties found in producing and publishing nursing knowledge and also to present scientific authors with suggestions that improve and streamline the process of elaborating and synthesizing knowledge, research results and reflections. besides discussing the content of components that form the structure of a scientific text, this article will also provide publishing policies that assist authors in choosing the correct journal for publishing, the desirable characteristics of language and text elaboration, and the procedures for publishing a manuscript. this article will also evidence the partnership between authors, reviewers and editors on the process of creating and publishing articles, which is not always appraised by the main agents of the development and publishing of scientific texts that portray the development and the performance of the profession.
An Optimal Life Insurance Policy in the Continuous-Time Investment-Consumption Problem  [PDF]
Hideki Iwaki, Yusuke Osaki
Journal of Mathematical Finance (JMF) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jmf.2013.32029

This paper considers an optimal life insurance for a household subject to mortality risk. The household receives wage income continuously, which could be terminated by unexpected premature loss of earning power. In order to hedge the risk of losing income stream, the household enters a life insurance contract. The household may also invest their wealth into a financial market. Therefore, the problem is to determine an optimal insurance/investment/consumption strategy. To reflect a real-life situation better, we consider an incomplete market where the household cannot trade insurance contracts continuously. We provide explicit solutions in a fairly general setup.

Márcia Regina Castro Barroso
Open Journal of Social Sciences (JSS) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jss.2014.26057
Abstract: This text is a small adaptation of our Master-degree’s dissertation, which had telework performed in Brazilian homes as its main goal. The research as a whole focused on both sociological and legal analyses of the aspects of telework, regarding flexible work schedules, legislation on distance work, hierarchical relationships, space and time organization of work utilizing telematic means, as well as perceptions of the actors involved with this activity. In this paper, the legal aspects of telework in Brazil will be emphasized.
