Premetazoan genome evolution and the regulation of cell differentiation in the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta

Abstract: A comparison of the 55 Mb S. rosetta genome with genomes from diverse opisthokonts suggests that the origin of metazoans was preceded by a period of dynamic gene gain and loss. The S. rosetta genome encodes homologs of cell adhesion, neuropeptide, and glycosphingolipid metabolism genes previously found only in metazoans and expands the repertoire of genes inferred to have been present in the progenitors of metazoans and choanoflagellates. Transcriptome analysis revealed that all four S. rosetta septins are upregulated in colonies relative to single cells, suggesting that these conserved cytokinesis proteins may regulate incomplete cytokinesis during colony development. Furthermore, genes shared exclusively by metazoans and choanoflagellates were disproportionately upregulated in colonies and the single cells from which they develop.The S. rosetta genome sequence helps to refine the catalog of metazoan-specific genes while also extending the evolutionary history of certain gene families that are central to metazoan biology. Transcriptome data suggest that conserved cytokinesis genes, including septins, may contribute to S. rosetta colony formation and indicate that the initiation of colony development may preferentially draw upon genes shared with metazoans, while later stages of colony maturation are likely regulated by genes unique to S. rosetta.

Abstract: A physical description of the orbital mechanics of stars around a galactic core has proved difficult. Notably, there is insufficient mass to account for observed star velocities. The mystery is one of few in modern science that defy the known laws of physics. It has been conjectured that there is a new form of matter that interacts gravitationally while otherwise remaining undetectable. In this paper we resolve the mystery. The expressions do not modify the known laws of physics, contain no free variables or fitting and are entirely classical in nature. Using the notion of counts of the fundamental measures—length, mass and time—it is shown that measure is bounded. Accounting for this bound and the expansion of space reveal that the conjecture is unnecessary thus resolving the dark matter mystery.
Women with Heart Failure Are at High Psychosocial Risk: A Systematic Review of How Sex and Gender Influence Heart Failure Self-Care

Abstract: To improve patient support, it is important to understand how people view and experience Heart Failure (HF) self-care. This systematic review of qualitative studies included all published studies that examine the influence of sex and gender on HF self-care. A systematic search was done for papers (1995–2010) indexed in Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Medline, Ovid EMBASE, Ovid PsycINFO, CSA Sociological Abstracts, OVID AARP Ageline, EBSCO Academic Search Complete, EBSCO CINAHL, EBSCO SocINDEX, ISI Web of Science: Social Sciences Citation Index and Science Citation Index Expanded, and Scopus. After screening of 537 citations, six qualitative studies identified that differences existed in perceptions of symptoms with women having less family involvement and psychosocial support around self-care. Moreover, women had considerably more negative views of the future, themselves and their ability to fulfill social self-care roles. Women with HF represent a highly vulnerable population and need more support for psychosocial wellbeing and self-care. 1. Introduction Due to ageing populations and increased survival rates from myocardial infarction, Heart Failure (HF) is now at epidemic levels in high-income countries [1, 2]. As a result, the costs of caring for people with HF are very high and rising. Over past decades, a primary strategy in reducing the personal and cost-related HF burden has been to promote the use of evidence-based medication prescribing [3–5]. However, over the last 5 years, there has been a growing recognition that to reduce the HF burden, it is vital to also address HF self-care [6–15]; that is, “the decisions and strategies undertaken by the individual in order to maintain life, healthy functioning and wellbeing” [16]. After being comparatively neglected for many years, self-care is now recognized as a “cornerstone” of effective HF management [9, 11]. Effective HF self-care improves the performance of the heart, reduces the demands of the body on the heart, and promotes general wellbeing. Evidence to support the importance of self-care in each of these areas has improved vastly over recent decades [15]. There is now strong evidence from large randomized trials and cohort studies that mortality, morbidity, and symptoms can be improved in key self-care domains through(i)consumption of key medications [17, 18],(ii)behavioural/lifestyle management (including smoking cessation, and salt, fluid and weight management) [1, 15, 19], (iii)timely use of health services [1], regular physical activity and good social relationships [1, 15]. Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify and examine the themes in the written productions of 114 kindergarten students. Participants were from two schools in different regions in the United States and were given an open-ended opportunity to draw and subsequently dictate a story. Content analysis was performed and six themes emerged: (a) family, (b) inanimate objects/personal belongings, (c) activities/events, (d) fantasy stories, (e) self-talk/reflection, and (f) nature/outdoors. Comparative analysis was performed for both gender and ethnicity and few differences were found between boys’ and girls’ stories or across ethnicities. Recommendations were included for teachers and families to allow young children more open-ended literacy opportunities and future research to analyze children’s drawings and stories between classrooms and across grade levels were included.
Breaking Topographic Lee Waves in a Tidal Channel in Luzon Strait

Abstract: Barotropic tides generate energetic internal tides, smaller-scale waves, and turbulence as they flow through Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the Philippines. Three-dimensional numerical simulations of this process suggest that small-scale lee waves will form and break preferentially in "outflow channels," trough-like depressions that descend the strait's flanks. In the simulations, these sites are the locations of the most intense dissipation in the eastern strait. To investigate this numerical prediction, an 11-day cruise on R/V Roger Revelle was devoted to exploring an outflow channel on the eastern slope of the strait, north of Batan Island. Using a rapidly profiling conductivity-temperature-depth sensor and shipboard Doppler sonars, observations of velocity and density fields were made at four sites in the channel. At Site III, approximately 4 km offshore the crest, the generated lee wave was found to occupy much of the water column. It expanded upward from the seafloor as an irregular disturbance with a dominant vertical scale of 250 m. Sea-surface horizontal currents exceeded 1.5 m s–1 and were sufficient to cause surface waves to break at 1,300 m above the local topography. Widespread internal wave breaking appeared initially at the seafloor and spread to much of the water column during the outflow phase of the tide. Breaking was also seen to a lesser extent on the inflow phase, as Pacific waters were advected westward toward the crest. The average dissipation rate at Site III, 8 W m–2, exceeds typical wind energy input rates by four orders of magnitude.
Evolutionarily Ancient Association of the FoxJ1 Transcription Factor with the Motile Ciliogenic Program

Abstract: It is generally believed that the last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) was a unicellular organism with motile cilia. In the vertebrates, the winged-helix transcription factor FoxJ1 functions as the master regulator of motile cilia biogenesis. Despite the antiquity of cilia, their highly conserved structure, and their mechanism of motility, the evolution of the transcriptional program controlling ciliogenesis has remained incompletely understood. In particular, it is presently not known how the generation of motile cilia is programmed outside of the vertebrates, and whether and to what extent the FoxJ1-dependent regulation is conserved. We have performed a survey of numerous eukaryotic genomes and discovered that genes homologous to foxJ1 are restricted only to organisms belonging to the unikont lineage. Using a mis-expression assay, we then obtained evidence of a conserved ability of FoxJ1 proteins from a number of diverse phyletic groups to activate the expression of a host of motile ciliary genes in zebrafish embryos. Conversely, we found that inactivation of a foxJ1 gene in Schmidtea mediterranea, a platyhelminth (flatworm) that utilizes motile cilia for locomotion, led to a profound disruption in the differentiation of motile cilia. Together, all of these findings provide the first evolutionary perspective into the transcriptional control of motile ciliogenesis and allow us to propose a conserved FoxJ1-regulated mechanism for motile cilia biogenesis back to the origin of the metazoans.
Emergency Preparedness Nursing Education: Learner and Faculty Perspectives  [PDF]

Abstract: Over the past decade, entry-to-practice emergency preparedness competencies have been identified as an essential component of nursing education. In this paper the author reports upon a small Canadian study which explores the perspective of undergraduate learners and faculty members who participated in and/or facilitated an Emergency Preparedness Simulation (EPS) module during a primary health care praxis course. The central purpose of this study was to explore the related experiences of learners and faculty who participated in or facilitated an Emergency Preparedness Simulation (EPS) module academic year and their perspectives on the effectiveness of the simulation in preparing learners to respond to emergencies in the future. The EPS module included a seminar followed by a mass-casualty simulation experience. The mass-casualty simulation experience included a “Teddy Bear” triage and an “Explosion” triage. The constructivist data analysis identified four related patterns for both the learner and faculty participants: Strengths (S), Objections (O), Suggestions (S), and Feelings (!) [SOS!]. Three themes were identified in each pattern: relevance, design, and engagement. In comparing the learner and faculty perspectives, there is a clear congruence between the strengths identified, the objections identified, and the power of feelings for both learners and faculty who participate in the emergency preparedness scenarios. Learners and faculty had different suggestions. Learners suggested more time on developing skills, particularly around first aid of individual clients, and recommended all students begin with the “Teddy Bear” triage. Faculty suggested a re-thinking of the “Explosion” triage simulation to emphasize community based emergency preparedness and responsiveness. Such re-focusing would support the integration of key primary health care principles and values including equity, social justice, and social determinants of health. Learners and faculty valued the EPS module and recommended it continue to be a learning component of the primary health care course.

Abstract: Unifying quantum and classical physics has proved difficult as their postulates are conflicting. Using the notion of counts of the fundamental measures—length, mass, and time—a unifying description is resolved. A theoretical framework is presented in a set of postulates by which a conversion between expressions from quantum and classical physics can be made. Conversions of well-known expressions from different areas of physics (quantum physics, gravitation, optics and cosmology) exemplify the approach and mathematical procedures. The postulated integer counts of fundamental measures change our understanding of length, suggesting that our current understanding of reality is distorted.

Abstract: Presenting a unified model of motion and gravity has proved difficult as current approaches to quantum and classical physics are incompatible. Using measurement quantization—a model that demonstrates the physical significance of Planck’s units of length, mass, and time—measure is expressed as counts of the fundamental units establishing a common framework for describing quantum and cosmological phenomena with expressions that are defined throughout the entire physical domain. Beginning with the Pythagorean Theorem, we demonstrate an understanding of measure with respect to static and moving references. The model is extended to include the measure of mass thus completing a single approach for describing the contraction and dilation of measure. With this new approach, relativistic effects are now described as properties of quantized finite units of measure. In support of the model, several descriptions of phenomena are resolved that match our most precise data such as the measure of dark energy, universal expansion, mass distribution, and the age of the Cosmic Microwave Background.
