Abstract: head and neck cancer has a high incidence in brazil, with cancer of the oral cavity being one of the five most common cancers among brazilians. alcohol and tobacco consumption may contribute to synchronous or metachronous head and neck cancer and esophageal cancer. a prospective study involving 60 patients with head and neck cancer was carried out at the state university of campinas -unicamp, campinas, sp, brazil to screen for superficial esophageal cancer and dysplasia using endoscopy and a 2% lugol dye solution followed by biopsy of the suspicious areas. five patients (8.3%) had superficial esophageal cancer, which was diagnosed as intraepithelial carcinoma in three of them (5.0%). in four patients, the superficial esophageal cancer was synchronous and in one it was metachronous to head and neck cancer. five patients (8.3%) had dysplasias in the esophageal epithelium (three were classified as mild and two as moderate). these results demonstrate the value of endoscopic screening of the esophagus using lugol dye in patients with head and neck cancer, particularly since superficial esophageal cancer is extremely difficult to detect by conventional methods in asymptomatic patients.
Diversidad de compuestos químicos producidos por las plantas contra hongos fitopatógenos
Montes-Belmont, Roberto;
Revista mexicana de micología , 2009,
Abstract: an outlook of knowledge of the relationship between chemical diversity defense mechanism in higher plants was reviewed. chemical structure and properties of plant species are well know in just a minimal percentage of all plants of the world. coevolutive process plant-fungi has allowed the development of complex and varied defense systems with both preformed antifungal compounds and induced substances by adverse factors. between both groups of compounds there are not clear differences in chemical structure. all plants that had been studied showed that fungal properties are worldwide and ecological factors had been determinants in qualitative and quantitative chemical production. until now only a few antimicrobial compounds are well know their modes of action. it is not rejected the possibility to develop in the future commercial fungicides from natural products with good perspectives in commercial market.

Abstract: at the time of new technological schemes and global risks, scientific thinking developed in the brazilian experience celebrates a memorable text of little more than 40 years: science and liberation, written by the nuclear physicist j. leite lopes. this paper investigates this thought, which communicates with the critical scientific horrified by the rubble of postwar and design a vision of epistemological rupture in view of social reality. this movement becomes a proposal for a management of knowledge. the methodological approach of this essay seeks texts that bear witness to and from post-war twentieth century, and contributions from the natural sciences and culture aimed at building a democratic society. the work of leite lopes lies there like a bunch of languages in the service of social change and the effective development of brazil and latin america.
Observa??es preliminares sobre a fauna bêntica de sedimentos moles da baia de Santos e regi?es vizinhas
Tommasi, Luiz Roberto;
Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico , 1967, DOI: 10.1590/S0373-55241967000100005
Abstract: the purpose of this paper is to give a preliminary qualitative assessment of the soft bottom macrofauna of the bay of santos and adjacent areas. sixty-three samples were taken by the 'emilia' with grab and otter trawl gears. 149 different species of benthic animals were collected, of which 52 were polychaets, 26 lamellibranchs, 20 echinoderms, 17 crustaceans, 14 gastropods, 4 cnidarians and 16 belonging to other taxonomic categories. the most frequent species were the polychaets audouinia tentaculata, poecilochaetus australis, onuphis quadricuspis, owenia fusiformis, telepus setosus and telepsavus costarum. the gastropod littoridina australis var. nana occurred in high densities in the samples collected in the inner part of the santos channel. ophiactis lymani was found to be the most widely distributed ophiuran in this region. the lamellibranchs mesodesma inactroides, tivela mactroides, donax hanleyanus and the thalassinid callianassa major are common in the sand beaches of the bay. in the mangrove region numerous decapods occurred of the following genera: uca, ucides, aratus, metasesarma, the "maria mulata", crab goniopsis cruentata, etc. five different station groups and two more areas may be recognized in the region of the bay of santos and the homonimous channel.

Observa??es s?bre a fauna bêntica do complexo estuarino-lagunar de Cananéia (SP)
Tommasi, Luiz Roberto;
Boletim do Instituto Oceanográfico , 1970, DOI: 10.1590/S0373-55241970000100003
Abstract: the cananéia region in the south of s?o paulo state, is a estuarine-lagunar complex, tn this region we realesed 60 benthic stations with a foerst "petersen grab" of 1/10 sq.m. we had studied the density and alcoholic weight of the benthic groups and species. the polychaets was the dominant group in number of species and of individuals. the commonest species was loandalia americana, laonice japonica, clymene sp., clymenella sp.. the highest density of polychaets was obtained in station 51, 10 meters deepthty, temperature of 18.60oc, salinity of 25.90%0, water transparency (secchy disc) of 2 meters, bottom of muddy, sand and pebles. in this station we found 72 individuals/sq. m. and a alcoholic weight of 5.9100 grm. the lamelibrancs was not dominant in neither one station. tellina alternata and macoma sp. occurred only in trapandé bay and cubat?o sea. littoridina australis var. nana occurs in high density in the north region of cananéia island. in this region it is the dominant benthic species. kalliapseudes schubartii occurs only in the cubat?o sea. renilla reniformis and virgularia sp. occurs specially in the trapandé bay. it was possible to recognize five faunistics zones in the soft bottoms of the complex. zone of renilla reniformis and virgularla sp.. the sediment of this zone have a low organic fraction and the zone is on direct influence of the ocean waters. zone of macoma sp. and tellina alternata in the cananéia sea. zone of the tanaidaceous kalliapseudes schubartii and phoronis sp. principally in the cubat?o sea. in this sea there are the highest organic fraction of the sediment. zone of littoridina australis var. nana in the northern region of the cananéia island. in this zone, we found a low transparency of the water, salinity of 4.91 to 12.36‰ and a high organic fraction in the sediment. zone of hard bottoms with hydroids and ophiuroids. the trapande bay, presents the richest muddy infralittoral benthic fauna of the complex. in this bay is found the highe
