Abstract: the techniques of plant height (ph) and rising plate meter (rpm) were used to estimate the herbage mass before and after grazing in cynodon dactylon (l.) pears and cynodon nlemfuensis var. nlenfuensis mixture pasture, under rotational system. regression equations between sward surface heigth or compressed sward heigth by disk and the herbage dry weight were established. to herbage mass before grazing, the coefficients of determination (r2) ranged from 0.70 to 0.87 for rpm and from 0.58 to 0.70 for ph. the residual herbage mass was poorly associated with heights of plant or disk (r2 values varying from 0.13 to 0.46). the rpm showed better results to estimate the herbage mass before grazing than ph. the techniques could not be recomended to estimated herbage mass after grazing.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the forage mass and botanical composition of brachiaria decumbens stapf pasture in monoculture and associated with stylosanthes guianensis (aubl.) sw. var. vulgaris cv. mineir?o in various months along the year. the samples from january and may were rumen incubated. three paddocks (replications) were divided in two plots (monoculture and associated pastures). after the evaluations forage was grazed by dried cows. the forage mass of b. decumbens did not vary with the pasture system; in october it was lower (291 kg/ha) and maintained stable along the other months (1,571 kg/ha). a decrease tendency of legume forage mass was observed during the experimental period. the proportion of s. guianensis in the pasture was higher in october/2001 and lower in january/2002. the total forage mass of associated pasture (2,158 kg/ha) was higher than the monoculture pasture (1,481 kg/ha). the degradation rates and effective degradability of s. guianensis and b. decumbens were respectively 6.8%/h and 61.5% and 5.3%/h and 49.2%. the legume contribute for higher quantity and better quality forage available in associated pasture.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a massa de forragem e a composi o botanica de pastagens de Brachiaria decumbens Stapf em monocultivo e consorciada com Stylosanthes guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. var. vulgaris cv. Mineir o, em diferentes meses do ano. As amostras obtidas em janeiro e maio foram submetidas a ensaio de degradabilidade in situ da matéria seca. Foram utilizados três piquetes (repeti es), cada um dividido em duas parcelas (monocultura e consorcia o). Após cada amostragem, o pasto foi submetido a pastejo com vacas secas. A massa de forragem de B. decumbens n o variou com o sistema de cultivo; foi menor no mês de outubro (291 kg/ha) e n o diferiu entre os demais meses (1.571 kg/ha). A massa de forragem da leguminosa decresceu ao longo do ano e sua porcentagem na pastagem foi maior em outubro/2001 e menor em janeiro/2002. A massa de forragem total na pastagem consorciada (2.158 kg/ha) foi maior que a do monocultivo (1.481 kg/ha). A taxa de degrada o e a degradabilidade efetiva média de S. guianensis foram, respectivamente, de 6,8%/h e 61,5%, e de B. decumbens foram de 5,3%/h e 49,2%. A leguminosa contribui no aumento da quantidade e na melhoria da qualidade da forragem disponível na pastagem.
Morfogênese e acúmulo de biomassa foliar em pastagem de capim-elefante avaliada em diferentes épocas do ano

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da época do ano nas características morfogênicas e estruturais e no acúmulo de biomassa foliar de uma pastagem de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.). Vacas mesti as Holandês x Zebu foram manejadas segundo o método de pastejo com lota o rotacionada com três dias de ocupa o e 30 dias de descanso. Foi usado delineamento em blocos casualizados com seis repeti es. As avalia es foram realizadas em fevereiro/mar o, abril/maio, julho/agosto e outubro de 2001. As maiores taxas de alongamento e aparecimento de folhas ocorreram durante fevereiro/mar o. Os perfilhos aéreos superaram os basilares em quantidade, mas apresentaram menores taxas de alongamento (5,1 versus 9,8 cm/dia/perfilho), aparecimento (0,13 versus 0,16 folhas/dia/perfilho) e senescência (0,9 versus 1,3 cm/dia/perfilho) foliares. As produ es e taxas de acúmulo de biomassa foliar foram maiores durante fevereiro/mar o e apresentaram estreita rela o com as variáveis morfogênicas. Os perfilhos aéreos contribuíram, em média, com 63% da biomassa foliar do capim-elefante.

Abstract: A altura das plantas (AP) e a altura comprimida da vegeta o por disco (AD) foram usadas para estimativas da massa de forragem antes e depois do pastejo em uma pastagem mista de capim-coastcross-1 (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pears) e capim-estrela (Cynodon nlenfuensis var. nlenfuensis), manejada rotativamente. Foram estabelecidas equa es de regress o entre a altura das plantas ou a altura comprimida da vegeta o por disco de raio conhecido e o peso seco de forragem. Para a massa de forragem antes do pastejo, os coeficientes de determina o variaram de 0,70 a 0,87 com a AD e de 0,58 a 0,70 com a AP. Para a massa de forragem após o pastejo, observaram-se piores ajustes das equa es, tendo em vista os baixos coeficientes de determina o (0,13 a 0,46). A AD apresentou melhores resultados para estimar a massa de forragem antes do pastejo. As técnicas apresentaram baixa confiabilidade para estimativas da massa de forragem após o pastejo.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the time of the year on morphogenetic and structural traits and leaf biomass accumulation of elephantgrass (pennisetum purpureum schum.). the sward was managed in a rotational stocking method with lactacting cows with 30 days of resting period and three days of paddock occupation. a randomized block and six replicates were used. evaluations were carried out at february/march, april/may, july/august and october of 2001. higher values of leaf appearance and expansion rates were observed during the february/march period. although the aerial tiller density was greater than the basal one, they showed lower leaf expansion (5.1 versus 9.8 cm/day/tiller), appearance (0.13 versus 0.16 leaves/day/tiller) and senescence (0.9 versus 1.3 cm/day/tiller) rates. the forage mass production and accumulation rates of leaf biomass were higher during february/march period and showed strong relationship with pasture morphogenetic traits. the aerial tillers contributed, in average, with 63% of total elephantgrass leaf biomass.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the herbage availability, nutritive value, dry matter intake and grass and legume percentage in diet of crossbred holstein-zebu cows, in pasture with brachiaria decumbens cv. basilisk, stylosanthes guianensis var. vulgaris cv. mineir?o and tree legumes. to estimate the fecal output, it was used 10 g cow-1 day-1 of chromium oxide during ten consecutive days. extrusa samples were used to determine the chemical composition and in vitro dry matter digestibility. b. decumbens availability varied with climatic conditions, while s. guianensis availability decreased linearly along the experimental period. dry matter intake was higher in may/2001 (1.9% body weight) and did not differ among other months (1.5% body weight). low dry matter intake values were related to low in vitro dry matter digestibility coefficients (42.1% to 48.0%) and high neutral detergent fiber content (70.2% to 79.4%). dry matter intake was directly related to legume percentage in the pasture. this observation could indicate the potential of mixed pasture for improving nutritive value in dairy cattle diet.

Abstract: the objective of this trial was to evaluate the morphophysiological traits and nutritive value of brachiaria decumbens, during 2003 and 2004 rainy seasons, in a silvopastoral system, with grass alone (30 m width), alternated with grass plus trees (acacia mangium, a. angustissima, mimosa arthemisiana, leucaena leucocephala x l. diversifolia, eucalyptus grandis) strips (10 m width). the experimental design was a randomized block arranged in a split plot design (morphophysiological traits) or split-split plot (nutritive value traits), and replicated four times. the level of shading was 65% of incident radiation out of the wood in 2003, and 35% in 2004 after harvesting of some eucalyptus trees. under shade, tiller population leaf area and forage mass index were higher in the second year than in the first. forage neutral detergent fiber value was higher at full sunlight than in the shade, while the crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility were higher under the trees. moderate shading increases crude protein and reduces neutral detergent fiber, therefore improving forage digestibility of grasses growing under trees.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the pasture characteristics and the performance of heifers from the holstein x zebu cross in a silvopastoral system (sps), and in a brachiaria (urochloa decumbens) pasture. the experiment was set up in a randomized block design with two treatments: an exclusive brachiaria pasture; and sps, which had mixed u. decumbens and stylosanthes guianensis strips alternating with strips with trees. paddocks were grazed in rotational stocking, with seven days of grazing and 35 and 49 days of rest in the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. pasture traits, dry matter intake and live weight gain did not vary with the systems. however, due to the reduction in the amount and nutritional value of the forage, these variables had higher values for the rainy season than the dry season, respectively: pre-grazing forage mass, 1,525 and 964 kg ha-1; crude protein, 9.3 and 8.2%; in vitro dry matter digestibility, 56.1 and 50.3%; dry matter intake, 2.3 and 1.6% of body weight; and live weight gain, 625 and 242 g per day per heifer. moderate shading in sps did not affect pasture traits, dry matter intake, or the performance of the heifers, in comparison to the values obtained for an exclusive brachiaria pasture.
Evaluation of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System model on the prediction of dry matter intake and milk production of grazing crossbred cows

Abstract: the cornel net carbohydrate and protein system model version 5.0 was assessed as for its prediction of dry matter intake and milk production of grazing lactating holstein × zebu cows. eight lactating cows grazing elephant grass (pennisetum purpureum, schum., cv. napier) were used in two experiments of 30 days each. the experimental design was of randomized blocks (subplots). dry matter intake was estimated using the chromium oxide and in vitro dry matter digestibility techniques. the estimated dry matter intake was compared with the values predicted by the model. extrusa samples of the elephant grass pasture were obtained from a cow with esophageal fistula during nine days in each experimental period. carbohydrate and nitrogenous fractions were analyzed and the degradation rate of carbohydrate was estimated by the gas production technique. the inputs referring to the animals (body weight, age, milk production, milk composition and breed type), to the environment (temperature, relative humidity of air and management condition) and to feeds chemical composition in each experimental period were inserted in the model. the model was accurate on the prediction of dry matter intake, considering that the mean values obtained by the chromium oxide technique and predicted by model (2.45 and 2.46% of body weight, respectively) did not differ significantly from each other. however, the model underestimated the observed milk production in 62.4%, where the metabolizable energy was the first limiting. these results demonstrate the need for studies that provide the development of a database for tropical foods (chemical composition and dynamics of rumen fermentation) and fitting of the model to the tropical conditions, for its appropriate application in formulation of diets and supplements in these regions.
