Eficácia e baixo custo no tratamento do ceratocone com o uso de lentes de contato rígidas gás-permeáveis
Schirmbeck, Tarciso;Paula, Jayter S.;Martin, Luiz Fernando Taranta;Crósio Filho, Henrique;Rom?o, Erasmo;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492005000200012
Abstract: purpose: to study the efficacy of rigid gas-permeable contact lens (rgpcl) fitting in keratoconus patients and to determine treatment costs. methods: the records of 126 patients treated at the hospital das clínicas de ribeir?o preto from january 2001 to june 2002 were retrospectively studied. information about sex, age and treated eyes was collected. visual acuity (va) with and without correction was measured and plotted against corneal base curve (k) and toricity. average price of the lenses was calculated. results: fitting rigid gas-permeable contact lens was successful in 86.18% of the patients, resulting in va=0.8 in 40.00% of them. visual acuity improvement was observed in patients with steep base curve and in patients with high corneal toricity. age of most patients ranged from 15 to 45 years; 60.31% of them were female. corneal transplantation was indicated in 11.24% of the cases. cost of each lens averaged r$ 40.00 (us$ 13.00). conclusion: rigid gas-permeable contact lens proved to be an efficient, low-cost resource for improving visual acuity in most of the treated patients.
Preoperative Nd:YAG laser anterior capsulotomy in white intumescent cataracts: report of 11 cases
Coelho, Roberto Pinto;Paula, Jayter Silva;Silva, Rafael Nery e;Garcia, Tatiana Vannucci;Martin, Luiz Fernando Taranta;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492009000100024
Abstract: creating a continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis in eyes with white intumescent cataracts is a challenge due to the high risk of extension of capsular tears to the lens periphery. several approaches have been described to avoid this complication and preoperative nd:yag laser anterior capsulotomy has been little reported as an optional technique. eleven patients with white intumescent cataracts were submitted to preoperative nd:yag laser anterior capsulotomy. all patients had some degree of cortex falling in anterior chamber after laser application. no patient developed later complications. thus, preoperative nd:yag laser anterior capsulotomy represents a safe and easy option for white intumescent cataracts.

Martin, Luiz Fernando Taranta;Bonini Filho, Marco Antonio;Odashiro, Alexandre Nakao;Gemperli, Lizabel;Gemperli, Daniela Barbosa;Rocha, Eduardo Melani;Paula, Jayter Silva de;
Revista Brasileira de Oftalmologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-72802010000200011
Abstract: cornea intraepithelial dysplasias are lesions with low risk of malignancy within the spectrum of intraepithelial neoplasia of the ocular surface. these areas are presented as dysplasias or leukoplasias and are associated with the presence of human papillomavirus (hpv), a major risk factor. in this report, the authors describe a case of a corneal intraepithelial dysplasia treated by surgical excision, with histological confirmation and negative dna hybridization for hpv.
Lift Truck Load Stress in Concrete Floors  [PDF]
Vinicius Fernando Arcaro, Luiz Carlos de Almeida
Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.72015
Abstract: This text presents an analytical expression to calculate the maximum tension, at the bottom side of a concrete slab on ground, due to lift truck wheel loads. The result of the analytical expression is in close agreement with the result of a design chart by the Portland Cement Association and with the result of a finite element analysis. The analytical expression is able to show the relationships among the design variables and it can be used for the thickness design of concrete floors for factories and warehouses. The expression applies only to unreinforced concrete slabs on ground.
Practical Aspects of the Design and Construction of a Small Cable Roof Structure  [PDF]
Vinicius Fernando Arcaro, Luiz Carlos de Almeida
Open Journal of Civil Engineering (OJCE) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/ojce.2017.73031
Abstract: Cable roof structures?have?only become widespread in large span structures in the latter part of the twentieth century. However,?they?still represent a relatively new form of roof construction, especially as in the present case of a small span innovative structural solution. The contribution of this text to the structural engineering community lies in the increased interest in building simple cable roof structures. Since its completion in September 1996, this small cable roof structure has been recognized as an interesting architectural and structural example. The text describes aspects of the design and construction of a small cable roof that was designed as a roof for an open-air theater stage for the city of Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Sao Paulo, Brazil. A cable network, in the shape of a hyperbolic paraboloid surface, is anchored in a reinforced concrete edge ring. The projection of the ring’s axis onto the ground plane is an ellipse. Workers with specialized training were employed in the various stages of the construction, which was completed in September 1996.
Gamma-ray computed tomography to evaluate changes in the structure of a clayey soil due to agricultural traffic
Pires, Luiz Fernando;
Acta Scientiarum. Agronomy , 2011, DOI: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.4727
Abstract: a first generation gamma-ray computed tomography (ct) equipped with a 137cs source was used to investigate changes in soil structure due to agricultural machinery traffic. core samples with volume of 55 cm3 were collected at the surface (0-10 cm) of a brazilian clayey soil. significant alterations in soil structure occurred after two passages of tractor wheels, with important decreases in soil porosity. ct data allowed a continuous analysis of soil bulk density and also soil porosity distribution for 1.25 and 1.20 mm layers, which cannot be provided by traditional methods commonly used in soil physics.
Rede de rela??es e poder de negocia??o: uma análise do caso citrícola brasileiro
Paulillo, Luiz Fernando;
Gest?o & Produ??o , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-530X2001000300004
Abstract: this article analyzes the network of citrus agribusiness in brazil, based on the analysis of the negotiation of power of the individual and collective actors involved. thus, the evolution of the relationships can be understood in net of the citrus agribusiness starting from the power resources of their individual actors (the resources being constitutional, juridical, organizational, financial and of information) and of the representation and agglutination capacities of their collective actors. the studied case presents a relevant contribution for an entire theoretical line of the normative neo-institutionalism, in which the organization is treated as an arena of interests and conflicting values, marked by the relational character of the power as resource or capacity distributed differently so that, when employee, with the due degree of strategic and tactical ability for the actors, produces and reproduces relationships hierarchically structured of autonomy and dependence.
O nervosismo como categoria nosográfica no come?o do século XX
Duarte, Luiz Fernando;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702010000600003
Abstract: the paper presents the conceptual framework surrounding the category of nervousness in brazilian psychiatry in the early twentieth century as represented in an article by henrique roxo published in arquivos brasileiros de psiquiatria, neurologia e medicina legal in 1916, and contextualizes it in the history of psychiatric classifications and representations about nerves and the nervous system. as such, it intends to contribute towards mapping out physicalistic naturalism (or epiphenomenalism), which can be seen throughout the representations of the human person and their disturbances in modern western culture.
Entre Clio e Calíope: a constru??o da narrativa histórica em Os sert?es
Valente, Luiz Fernando;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59701998000400003
Abstract: the complex alliance between history and fiction found in os sert?es is examined from the perspective of new theories on the textuality of history and new methodologies in the study of literary texts, such as the so-called new historicism. after presenting a synthesis of these tools, the essay examines the construction of the narrative in os sert?es and shows how cunha?s text is characterized by an inter-penetration of the system that informed the scientist with the system that governed the artist. as the intellectual and scientific framework imported from europe proves inadequate in recording the brazilian reality, cunhas? text begins slipping back and forth between history and fiction. in conclusion, it is argued that only in the interstices between history and fiction does cunha manage to situate that truth which, starting right in his ?preliminary note?, he claimed as his prime objective.
A política externa estadunidense no atual quadro político sul-americano
Silva, Luiz Fernando da;
Latinoamérica. Revista de estudios Latinoamericanos , 2011,
Abstract: the central thesis that we aim to survey in this paper is that the present south-american political scene has required of the american imperialism a strategical redesign, in the sense of the neutralization, weakening and, if it is possible, destruction of regional political experiences/tendencies not aligned to its foreign politics. under the mask of the defense of democracy and beneath the argument that latin american "market oriented politics" are at stake, due to questions that goes back from the "delin-quency" -in mexico-, the global terrorism, the organized international crime up to the worldwide drug traffic, the global strategy of american imperialism then sets up the definition of a new doctrine of preventive war that justifies the utilization of hard power against any country, in the name of its own defense. at the heart of the question what -actually- is in the agenda is the defense (and reproduction) of the benefits of its multinationals corporations and financial capital, by means of the international sub-traction of profitable assets, such as financial, energetic, communicational and natural resources, in addition to the domination of local markets, beyond facilitating capital flee amongst others.
