Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Weber, Silke;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2008000500035
Abstract: this study provides historical documents of peripheral facial palsy from egypt, greece and rome, through the middle ages, and the renaissance, and into the last four centuries. we believe that the history of peripheral facial palsy parallels history of the human race itself. emphasis is made on contributions by avicenna and nicolaus friedreich. controversies about the original clinical description by charles bell are also discussed.
Atypical Calcified Ganglioglioma: A Rare Case Report  [PDF]
Seizo Yamashita, Luiz Antonio Resende, Fernanda M. P. Souza, Marco Zanini, Carlos Clayton, André P. Trindade
Advances in Computed Tomography (ACT) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/act.2014.31002

Considered rare tumors, gangliogliomas account for 0.4% - 0.9% of intracranial neoplasms. The peak of its incidence occurs between 10 and 20 years of age. These tumors are composed of glial and ganglion cells and they are relatively low-grade neoplasms associated with good prognoses. We report a case of an atypical calcified ganglioglioma in an 18-year-old woman with history of four months of stabbing right-sided parietal headache, paroxysmal. On image studies were noted the presence of thick wall calcification in gangliogliomas. Although rare, this atypical ganglioglioma should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions occurring in this area of the brain.

Eletrencefalograma antes e após hemodiálise, diálise peritoneal e transplante renal: estudo de correla??es da atividade de fundo com a bioquímica plasmática
Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Speciali, José Geraldo;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1987, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1987000300005
Abstract: we report disorganization of background activity in the eeg of 49 patients with chronic renal failure. an electroencephalographic and biochemical study was performed in 20 patients before and after dialysis sessions. we did the same study before and after peritoneal dialysis in 14 patients. we analysed the eeg compared to biochemical blood abnormalities before and after renal transplantation in 15 patients. we observed worsening of the eeg after hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and improvement after renal transplantation, suggesting that in our patients the abnormalities in eeg caused by chronic renal failure were reversible. from our results, we found it difficult to establish correlations between the eeg and the biochemical blood abnormalities. however, there is statistical correlation between hipernatremia, improvement of metabolic acidosis, increase of the ratio of zinc to copper and worsening of the background activity in eeg.
Solving the conundrum of Job: a probable biblical description of chronic renal failure with neurological symptoms
Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Kirchner, Daniel Rocco;Resende, Lucilene Silva Ruiz e;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2009000300037
Abstract: the disease described in the bible' book of job is controversial and had been of interest of theologists, psychiatrists, and dermatologists for many years. we describe several signs and symptoms compatible with chronic renal failure with neurological alterations.
Traumatic subdural hygroma: five cases with changed density and spontaneous resolution
Zanini, Marco Antonio;Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Freitas, Carlos Clayton Macedo de;Yamashita, Seizo;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2007000100015
Abstract: thirty-four consecutive adult patients with subdural traumatic hygroma were analysed for clinical evolution, serial computed tomography scan (ct), and magnetic resonance imaging (mri) over a period of several months. five of the patients presented ct scan and mri evolution data showing increasing density over a period of 11 days to 6 months post trauma. in these five patients, final clinical and ct scan data were benign, with complete spontaneous resolution. descriptions in literature of evolving traumatic subdural hygroma have presented ct scan density modifications changing into chronic subdural hematoma. our patients show another possibility, density transformation, which sometimes show as subdural hematoma in ct scan and mri, but with final evolution where clinical condition and ct scan return to normal.
Effects of cervical sympathectomy on vasospasm induced by meningeal haemorrhage in rabbits
Faleiros, Ant?nio Tadeu de Souza;Maffei, Francisco Humberto de Abreu;Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2006000400006
Abstract: this study investigates the role of cervical sympathectomy in the prevention of acute vasospasm induced by meningeal haemorrhage in rabbits. sixteen adult english norfolk rabbits were divided into 2 experimental groups: bilateral cervical sympathectomy of the superior sympathetic ganglion (sssg, n=8), and bilateral sssg and sympathectomy of the inferior sympathetic ganglion (sisg, n=8). other 24 animals were used as controls. basilar artery diameter was evaluated by angiography. sssg protected the animals against developing cerebral vasospasm; sssg associated with sisg did not increase this effect.
Potenciais evocados na neurocisticercose
Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Agapejev, Svetlana;Rodrigues, Renata;Schelp, Arthur Oscar;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1997000200014
Abstract: in 25 patients with cysticercosis of central nervous system, classified in two clinical forms, benign and malign, evoked potentials were obtained. normal exam was found in 9 cases with the benign form. from 4 patients with malign clinical presentations, 2 had multiple abnormalities of the evoked potentials, and f wave alterations (mixed pattern). the authors suggest that this mixed pattern may be indicative of severe prognosis.
Stroke in ancient times: a reinterpretation of Psalms 137:5,6
Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;Weber, Silke Anna Theresa;Bertotti, Marcelo Fernando Zeugner;Agapejev, Svetlana;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X2008000400033
Abstract: stroke was probably first described in psalms 136: 5-6 of the catholic bible, and psalms 137:5-6 of the evangelical bible. based on the portuguese, spanish, english, german, dutch, russian, greek, and original hebrew bible, the significance of this psalm is the invocation of a punishment, of which the final result would be a stroke of the left middle cerebral artery, causing motor aphasia and right hemiparesis.
Pourradiculoneurite e neurocisticercose: relato de caso
Agapejev, Svetlana;Silva, Maria Dorvalina da;Resende, Luiz Antonio de Lima;
Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1996000100018
Abstract: report of a patient with the hydrocephalic and meningoencephalitic form of neurocysticercosis who simultaneously developed polyradiculoneuropathy and intracranial hypertension syndrome during the first week of treatment with albendazole. etiologic agents associated with polyradiculoneuropathy related in the literature are cited. some comments about the possible physiopathogeny of this entity in the presence of cysticercosis are also done. it is mentioned another case who presented polyradiculoneuropathy as the only manifestation of a probable cysticercosis of the nervous system. in this presented case, including the neurocysticercosis and even a mere coincidence of facts, some factors can have a relationship with the appearance of polyradiculoneuropathy as the surgical stress, the stress due to the severity of the clinical picture and the possible side effect of albendazole.
Comportamento da condutividade elétrica e do conteúdo de cloretos do leite como métodos auxiliares de diagnóstico na mastite subclínica bovina
Zafalon, Luiz Francisco;Nader Filho, Antonio;Oliveira, José Victor de;Resende, Flávio Dutra de;
Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-736X2005000300006
Abstract: electrical conductivity measured by a hand-held meter and chloride concentration of milk were studied as auxiliary methods for diagnosis of bovine subclinical mastitis in the identification of affected mammary quarters where staphylococcus aureus and corynebacterium sp were later isolated. tests were made during 2 years in holstein cows of a dairy farm producing type c milk, where milking was performed once a day. sensitivities of electrical conductivity and chloride concentration tests from mammary quarters, where corynebacterium sp was isolated (65.3% and 78.3%, respectively), were superior to the found in mammary quarters where s. aureus was identified (55.4% and 68.2%, respectively). the efficacies of the two diagnostic tests were similar. statistical significance was demonstrated with regression analysis of both tests of healthy mammary quarters and subclinical mastitis quarters infected with staphylococcus aureus.
