Convex bodies with many elliptic sections
Isaac Arelio,Luis Montejano
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: {We show in this paper that two normal elliptic sections through every point of the boundary of a smooth convex body essentially characterize an ellipsoid and furthermore, that four different pairwise non-tangent elliptic sections through every point of the $C^2$-differentiable boundary of a convex body also essentially characterize an ellipsoid.
Match Analysis in a University Taekwondo Championship  [PDF]
Coral Falco, Raul Landeo, Cristina Menescardi, José Luis Bermejo, Isaac Estevan
Advances in Physical Education (APE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ape.2012.21005
Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of medallists’ taekwondo athletes in University level Championship. Kicking actions were grouped into three categories; circular, linear and with a previous spin kicks. Performance was evaluated based on 1) the type and height of the kicks employed, 2) the attacking and counterattacking nature of the kicking actions and 3) the scoring profiles of these. Forty-five matches from the four Olympic weight categories were notationally analyzed in male and female populations. Kruskal-Wallis tests revealed that the reading scores in the four weight categories differed significantly in males for linear kicks, and in circular kicks to the chest, attacking kicks and total actions (p < 0.05) for females. A greater number of circular kicks was recorded in male and female taekwondo athletes; this was followed by linear kicks and those with a previous spin. Kicks to the chest were also more common than kicks to the head as well as attacking kicks were used more frequently than counterattacking kicks. Given the new competition rules, coaches are encouraged to induce athletes to increase the frequency of kicks to the head and with a previous spin to maximise the point scoring rate per kicks delivered.

Journal of Water Resource and Protection (JWARP) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jwarp.2013.511108
Abstract:

Wastewater from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (Mexico) was treated by a coagulation-flocculation using natural gums. The residual water was characterized in terms of organic load, and biological contaminants, i.e. total Coliforms (TC), fecal Coliforms (FC) and helminth eggs (HE). The sample has values of 2.8 × 107 MPN/100 ml, 8.48 × 106 MPN/100 ml and 470 HE/L is regarded to TC, FC and HH, respectively. The HE identified in the wastewaters were Diphyllobothrium latum, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepis nana and Toxocara canis. From several gums, Hydroxypropyl triammonium chloride guar gum (HPTAC-guar) was selected as the most adequate coagulant-flocculant for the class of municipal wastewater (MWW). A diminution of 82% for TC, 94% for FC and 99% for HE was obtained. Besides, the reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and turbidity removals were 46% and 39% respectively. The natural gum mixed with Ca(OH)2, obtained removals of 52% for TC, 100% for HE, 47% for COD and 30% for turbidity.

Abstract: the objective of this work is to determine the feasibility of the laparoscopic approach for patients with penetrating abdominal stab wounds. the patients with abdominal stab wounds whose digital exploration under local anesthesia in emergency room was suggestive of peritoneal penetration were included. cases with hemodynamic instability or midline laparotomies were excluded. since june 2003 until september 2004 thirty seven patients with abdominal stab wounds were admitted, 7 of which were evaluated by laparoscopy. peritoneal penetration was confirmed in 4 patients (57,2%) in which the findings were hepatic injury grade i in two cases, round ligament injury in one, and abdominal wall injury in the remaining. in these patients the management consisted in hemoperitoneum aspiration and peritoneal lavage. surgical time was 60 minutes average and no morbidity nor mortality occurred. we concluded that laparoscopic approach is feasible and safe in the evaluation of the stab wound abdominal trauma with peritoneal penetration.

Newton’s Method and an Exact Opposite That Average into Halley’s Method  [PDF]
Isaac Fried
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/am.2017.810103
Abstract:
This note is mainly concerned with the creation of oppositely converging and alternatingly converging iterative methods that have the added advantage of providing ever tighter bounds on the targeted root. By a slight parametric perturbation of Newton’s method we create an oscillating super-linear method approaching the targeted root alternatingly from above and from below. Further extension of Newton’s method creates an oppositely converging quadratic counterpart to it. This new method requires a second derivative, but for it, the average of the two opposite methods rises to become a cubic method. This note examines also the creation of high order iterative methods by a repeated specification of undetermined coefficients.
Newton, Halley, Pell and the Optimal Iterative High-Order Rational Approximation of √N  [PDF]
Isaac Fried
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/am.2018.97059
Abstract:
In this paper we examine single-step iterative methods for the solution of the nonlinear algebraic equation f (x) = x2 - N = 0 , for some integer N, generating rational approximations p/q that are optimal in the sense of Pell’s equation p2 - Nq2 = k for some integer k, converging either alternatingly or oppositely.
Discuss?o teórica sobre o conceito de perdas do Sistema Toyota de Produ??o: inserindo a lógica do ganho da Teoria das Restri??es

Abstract: this study presents a theoretical reflection about the possible impacts on of the theory of constraints (toc) indicators caused by the seven wastes in the toyota production system (tps) and a type of waste which is not included in that context. it refers to the 'waste due to unsatisfactory definition of product mix' influenced by the use of inappropriate methods to formulate the product mix. therefore, a conceptual neologism is introduced, identified as the "pergas" to demonstrate the overall gain waste derived from this practice. the need to reduce process waste is due to the fact that no value is added to the product and the cost increase putting at risk, in some situations, the organizational competitiveness. similarly, the fight against "pergas" leads to an increase in the indexes monitored by the global indicators of toc, through the creation of a mix of products that contributes to the company's goal. a structural framework was developed relating the seven wastes addressed in the tps and toc indicators, which will provide subsidies to support the relations that cause impacts and will enable the proposal of improvement actions focusing on reducing the impacts presented.
