Abstract: currently, it has been given a special attention to developing technologies for short-term storage of fish semen, for a few days to weeks, using extenders of semen that do not activate the sperm motility. the short-term storage technique is indicated for fish culture to facilitate the artificial reproduction and to increase its efficiency. the objective of this study was to verify the effect of bts (beltsville thawing solution - minitub?) as an extender for pacu (piaractus mesopotamicus) semen. semen of each of the six males (previously treated with carp pituitary extract) was divided into three fractions: one fraction was kept in natura and the other two fractions were diluited (1:3) with either extender 1 (bts 5% + potassium iodide 0,16%) or extender 2 (bts 5% + sodium citrate 1,28%). the sperm motility was induced with distilled water, and the percentage and duration of sperm motility was scored. the percentage of moving sperm cell was significantly higher (p<0,05) in semen in natura (95,00 ± 3,16%) compared with semen diluted in extender 1 (80,00 ± 9,49%) or 2 (80,00 ± 11,40%). on the other hand, the duration of sperm motility was not affected by any extender (p>0,05) and ranged from 221,50 ± 207,89 seconds (semen diluted in extender 1) to 486,83 ± 314,55 seconds (semen in natura). after that samples for the evaluation of the sperm concentration were collected, with an average value of about 13,89 ± 1,26 x 109/ml. one can conclude, that bts may be used to preserve pacu semen, as long as the salts used may be added on a higher concentration, in order to increase the bts solution osmolarity. it is also suggested that other salts should be tested.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of tambacu vitamin e dietary supplementation on performance and hematological variables, and determine the relationship of glutathione peroxidase activity with vitamin e and selenium suplementation. two hundred and fifty juvenile tambacus were used, divided into 25 aquaria. the basal diet was pelleted with 32% of crude protein and 3,300 kcal kg-1 of digestible energy, with 0.40 mg kg-1 se. test diets - isoproteic and isocaloric - were composed of the basal diet with increasing vitamin e concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300, 400 mg kg-1), in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and five replications. no significant effect of vitamin e supplementation was observed on total length, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration and total erythrocyte, and on the enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase. however, final weight and apparent feed conversion were significantly affected by supplemented treatments. standard length and weight gain improved using diets supplemented with 400 mg kg-1 of vitamin e. dietary vitamin e supplementation results in better tambacu performance.

Pesquisa Agropecuária Brasileira , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-204X2008000800016
Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect and interaction between supplementation of tocopherol acetate and ascorbyl palmitate, in the diet of dourado larvae (salminus brasiliensis), during its initial development. the experimental design was completely randomized in split plot, as follows: in the plot, a factorial arrangement (2x3) with six diets, constituted by the combination between two concentrations of tocopherol acetate (0 and 250 mg kg-1) and three concentrations of ascorbyl palmitate (0, 100 and 1,000 mg kg-1); and in the subplot, with two periods of sampling (5 and 15 days of feeding). in the larvae, determinations were performed for the concentrations of the ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acid, total length, weight and height of the head. ascorbyl palmitate provided an increase in the total length and in the weight of the larvae after 15 days of feeding. for head height, differences were observed among the three doses of tested ascorbyl palmitate. the supplementation of ascorbyl palmitate increased the vitamin c concentrations. although vitamin e has not influenced the development sizes, it acted as a metabolic pro-oxidant, which increased the dehydroascorbic acid.

Abstract: a total of 35 males of nile tilapia, averaging initial weight of 205 g, were maintained in five 250 l metabolism boxes to evaluate the lipid metabolism of nile tilapias (oreochromis niloticus). the experiment lasted 30 days, from october to november 2006. the treatments were: control diet plus olive oil; control diet plus corn oil; control diet plus soybean oil; control diet plus linseed oil; control diet plus fish oil. the experiment was in a completely randomized design with five treatments and seven replicates. the evaluated parameters were: fatty acid profile of the muscle tissue and hepatic activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (g6pd) and malic enzyme (me). the data were submitted to variance analysis and the means of the treatments were compared by scott-knott's test (5% of significance). the fish fed on a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids presented increased contents of such fat acids in their lipid muscle composition. the hepatic activity of g6pd was superior to that of me, being higher in the specimen fed rations containing olive, corn and soybean oil, thus, evidencing the highest lipid muscle deposition of these fish.

Abstract: to evaluate the influence of benzocaine concentration on the induction and recovery from anesthesia in different sized nile tilapia (oreochromis niloticus), it was developed a random block experiment design in 4 × 4 factorial consisted of four fish lengths (6; 10; 14 and 18 cm total lenght) and four benzocaine concentrations (60; 120; 180 and 240 mg of benzocaine per liter of water). the induction and the recovery from anesthesia were divided in three stages based on the behavior of the fishes under anesthetic effect. the time spent in each stage was recorded. differences in length did not affect significantly the anesthesia and recovery time. linear plateu regressions were generated to estimate the point which increases on anesthetic doses does not imply in further effects. during the anesthesia induction, the plateu occurred in concentration time of 132 mg/l, and estimated time of 86 seconds would be necessary to achieve the complete sedation (stage 3). for permanence of the fish under total sedation, it is needed 190 g/l benzocaine and estimated time of permanence in this stage is 91.1 seconds. benzocaine concentrations above 190 mg/l do not produce any additional effects that justify its use.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542009000300033
Abstract: the objective of this research was to evaluate the sex reversal technique using 17α--methyltestosterone (mt) hormone, submitted to temperature modification of fry nilo tilapia storage, aiming to get the data of sex reversal combined with growth performance and fry survival. the experiment was performed at ufla fish culture station, using tilapia fry (0,008 ± 0.002 g e 0,9 ± 0.1 cm) obeying a totally randomized experimental delineation in a factorial scheme 4x4, in 4 temperatures (26o, 28o, 30o, 32oc) and 4 hormonal doses (0, 20, 40, 60mg of mt/kg of ration) during 28 days, with 5 repetitions. as temperature raised, weight gain rate, size and survival increased (p<0.01); however, this temperature raise was not effective in modifying males ratio (p>0.01), which occurred only due to the used hormone treatment. the dose of 40 mg of mt/kg of ration provided similar results to those of 60mg of mt/kg of ration. hence, the temperature band from 26o to 32oc does not affect sex reversal rate, but temperatures around 30oc improves the performance of tilapias related to the growth and survival, and the dose of 40 mg of mt/kg of ration is enough to achieve monosex populations.

Abstract: the objectives of this trial were to evaluate the efficacy of oregan extract (oe), as growth promoter, in the diets, on performance, immune system (bursa fabricius weight and volume, spleen weight and thymus weight), anatomic-physiological parameters of the gastrointestinal tract (villy height, crypta depth and villy:crypta ratio), caecum microbiological analysis, and duodenum and caecum ph. one thousand and fourty male cobb 500 chicks, in two growing phases (1 to 21 and 1 to 42 days old) were randomly assigned to six treatments and eight replicates of 30 broilers. the basal diet (bd) was fed during the three phases (1 to 21, 22 to 35 and 36 to 42 days old), according to the following treatments: t1 - bd, t2 - bd with antibiotic (25 ppm zinc bacitracin), t3 - bd with 0.025% oe, t4 - bd with 0.050% oe, t5 - bd with 0.075% oe, and t6 - bd with 0.100% oe. no effect of treatments on broiler performance and duodenum and caecum ph in both phases was observed. the immunity system and anatomic-physiological parameters of gastrointestinal tract were not affected by the treatments, during the first phase. at 42 days old, only the spleen weight and villy height were affected by treatments. decreasing effect on the number of bacteriums in caecum as the dietary level of oregan extract increased showed the antimicrobian effect of oregan extract. based on these results, it is possible to conclude that the use of oregan extract as growth promoter did not differ from the other treatments (antibiotic and control).

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982004000600001
Abstract: the experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of 3 diluents bts+kcl - d1, bts+2kcl - d2 and bts+sodium citrate - d3) and three different times (hour 0, 72 hours and 144 hours) in piracanjuba (brycon orbignyanus) semen at 4°c. the assay aimed to test usefulness of bts (betsville thawing solution) diluent medium, added to sodium citrate and potassium clorate, in maintenance of spermatic immobility and of its conditions to conserve semen characteristics as spermatic motility rate and duration. satisfactory results were found until at 144 hours of cooling for this specie. the mean spermatic motility in the in natura state was 94 ± 5.48% with mean duration of 55.6 ± 32.25 seconds (s). for diluted semen, motility and duration means were 76.00 ± 1.86% and 56.6 ± 6.54 s, 77.00 ± 1.86% and 54.6 ± 6.54 s, and 74.33 ± 1.86% and 75.0 ± 6.54 s, respectivaly, for diluents d1, d2 and d3, in this order. significant differences were not observed among diluents and they showed similar effects in at different times. at 0 and 72 h of analysis showed higher spermatic motilities than that ones at 144 h, but durations of spermatic motility did not show differences in these times. the semen mean spermatic concentration was 8.21 ± 2.26 x 109 sptz/ml. some samples showed spermatic motility before semen activation (fore-activation) principally after 96 hours of cooling. thus, bts medium diluent may be recommended for fish semen conservation, since its osmolarity is elevated.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982009001000005
Abstract: the study was conducted with the objective of evaluate different types and volumes of diluents through the reproductive performance of 72 artificially inseminated sows. a randomized complete design was used in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement, with three diluents and two semen volumes. the semen used was obtained from three boars of known fertility. the ejaculates were diluted in equal parts, with the commercial diluents a, b and c, constituting semen doses of 1.5 billion spermatozoids in volumes of 15 or 30 ml. the analyzed variables were farrowing rate, indexes of return to estrus, total number of piglets born, number of piglets born alive, mummified and stillborn piglets, and litter weight at birth. differences were not observed between the farrowing rates and indexes of return to estrus. the greatest means of total number of piglets born, piglets born alive and litter weight at birth were from females inseminated with semen doses containing diluents b and c. there were no differences among the inseminating volumes within the diluents b and c for any of the variables. for diluent a, the volume that provided the largest litter size and number of piglets born alive was 15 ml. the number of stillborn and mummified piglets did not differ between the treatments. the intrauterine insemination of sows from two to five parities, with inseminating doses of 15 ml diluted in short term diluents (diluents b or c) give satisfactory indexes of reproductive performance.
