Abstract: Pollen samples were collected in three different periods from 11 Melipona capixaba Moure & Camargo hives and analyzed with melissopalynological methodology. A total of 33 pollen types were identified, of which 23 genera and 15 families were identified. The following families showed the highest pollen richness: Fabaceae (7), Myrtaceae (3), Solanaceae (3), Arecaceae (2), Asteraceae (2), Euphorbiaceae (2), Melastomataceae/Combretaceae (2), Rubiaceae (2), and Sapindaceae (2). The most frequent pollen types (>45%) were Eucalyptus, which generated great similarities between the samples, except one in which the Tibouchina was predominant. Although the majority of the pollen types showed low percentage values, the results demonstrated that M. capixaba has taken advantage of the polliniferous sources available in the Atlantic Rainforest as well as in the “Capoeira” (brushwood, secondary forest) and “ruderal” (field) plants, probably implying its importance as a pollinator of the native flora and of the exotic species. 1. Introduction Melipona Illger constitutes the genus of Meliponini tribe with the biggest amount of species. It occurs in the whole neotropical region, which is the most diversified in the Amazon basin [1]. M. capixaba (popularly known as uru?u-preta or uru?u-capixaba) is endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest where it is restricted to the mountainous area of Espírito Santo State in the municipalities of Domingos Martins, Concei??o do Castelo, Venda Nova do Imigrante, Alfredo Chaves, and Afonso Cláudio embracing Pedra Azul State Park, which is protected by the government. M. capixaba was described by Moure and Camargo [2] who referred it to the Meliponini group of the Amazon region and designated by Rocha and Pompolo [3] to the same karyotype group of M. scutellaris Latreille. Experiments proved that the lack of anatomical or behavioural isolation mechanisms allowed the crossing of these species when they were brought into the same area. These observations suggest that the two species are capable of forming fertile hybrids [4]. The fact that two ecologically different species of stingless bees, separated by more than 300?km, could still cross when placed in the same area suggests that there has not been any pressure to develop reproductive isolation [4]. However, M. capixaba is mentioned on the list of Endangered Brazilian species (Normative Instructions no. 3, May 27th 2003, Ministry of Environment) because its original habitat has been almost completely fragmented to make room to pastureland, coffee (Coffea sp), and Eucalytus sp cultivars. Abstract: objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of adding vildagliptin to the treatment of patients with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2dm) treated with a combination of metformin and a sulphonylurea. subjects and methods: 37 t2dm patients with hba1c ranging from 7.7% to 12.4% (mean of 9.30 ± 1.38), despite the use of metformin in combination with a sulphonylurea, were additionally treated with vildagliptin (100 mg/day) for at least 6 months. results: during triple oral therapy (tot) hba1c levels < 7% were achieved in 11 patients (29.7%), whereas levels of fasting plasma glucose (fpg) < 120 mg/dl were observed in 12 patients (32.4%). both findings were observed in 10 patients (27.0%). compared to nonresponsive subjects, lower mean baseline hba1c and fpg levels were seen in responsive patients, but the difference was only statistically significant for fasting plasma glucose (fpg). moreover, there was considerable overlap between the two groups. conlusion: our preliminary results suggest that tot with metformin, a sulphonylurea and vildagliptin may be useful for some t2dm patients nonresponsive to combination therapy with metformin and sulphonylurea.

Abstract: abstract the new global context of knowledge production and scientific and technological development has required the adoption of new tools of intervention and for policy making in the r&d field. a new model of structure called ?science and technology observatory? became common in the mid 90s based on the french pioneering experience. further to the production and promotion of a wide range of indicators concerning the national s&t situation, those ?observatories? are conceived to achieve more general purposes and missions, including the setting up of research projects and report publishing as well as training and exchange programmes specially shaped for researchers in this new field of study. the analysis of the consolidation process and the evolution of the main existing international experiences lead us to focus on some key issues that should be taken into consideration when undertaking this kind of initiative, particularly in the latin america context.

Abstract: In contemporary economies, the performance of innovation systems is in a large measure, associated to the intensity and efficiency of interaction among the different players involved inthe generation and diffusion of new knowledges and technologies. These interactions are translatedinto a kind of institutionalized mutual "learning" that contributes to create a stock of economicallyuseful knowledges. From this general postulate, the paper offers an analisys of the main developments in thenature of the interactions among scientific research and industrial activity in developed countries, focusing the new ways of public power intervention aiming to favour and to directly supportthese collaborations. The paper is based essentially in the information gathered in two comparative studies ofthe more recent experiences observed in the main industrialized countries, carried out under thepatronage of OECD and the EU. The "industry-science relationships" (RCI) prevailing in thesecontexts are here examined under the perspective of the modalities and of the relative importanceof the available cooperation dispositives, of the new institutional arrangements and of the structuresof incentive that are being widely adopted by local powers. Finally, some policy implications andthe main recommendations deriving from these studies are briefly presented.
