Abstract: in rootstock propagation, several methods can be used; however few practices are adopted due to the lack of information about the behavior of stionic combinations at field. the work aimed to compare the propagation method by air layering with the traditional propagation system by seeds using the scion peach [prunus persica (l.) batsch] cultivar granada. the following variables were measured: yield, fruit weight and size, skin color, flesh firmness, total soluble solids content (tss) and titatrable acidity (ta), tss/ta ratio, total phenols, trunk diameter and pruning mass. yield, total phenols and titatrable acidity were higher when using the air layering propagation. there was no difference between propagation methods regarding color and diameter of fruit, flesh firmness and total soluble solid and tss/ta ratio. depending on propagation method, the fruit weight did not differ, nevertheless using the seed propagated capdeboscq rootstock fruit weight was heavier. plant behavior in each propagation method depended on the rootstock used. scion cultivar (cv.) granada on air layering rootstock-derived keeps similar or superior yield and same attributes of fruit quality, better than using rootstocks derived from seeds.

Abstract: The cultivar Malbec has been present’s good performance and quality in the South Half of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). In this context, we aimed to evaluate the quality of Malbec grapes in relation to the phytotechnical, physicochemical parameters and bioactive compounds under different intensities of cluster thinning in Encruzilhada do Sul-RS. The experiment was carried out in a commercial vineyard in the 2015/16 with the cultivar Malbec (Vitis vinifera L.) under rootstock 1103 Paulsen, with spacing of 2.2 m between rows and 1.1 m between plants. The experimental design was of randomized complete blocks with five replications. The treatment factor tested was the cluster thinning, with four levels (0%, 10%, 30% and 50%), performed in véraison. The evaluated phytotechnical variables were cluster length, cluster fresh weight, berries fresh weight, number of berries, rachis fresh weight. Also what were determined are the number of clusters, production and Ravaz index. The physicochemical variables verified were pH, soluble solids (SS), titratable acidity (TA) and SS/TA ratio. The bioactive compounds were total polyphenols index and total anthocyanins. The appropriate balance between source

Abstract: a species that is being introduced in the plantations of small fruits is the cape-gooseberry. the solanaceae is considered a rugged plant that is difficult to maintain its upright stems; its fruits are in a glass that protects against insects, birds, and adverse conditions. this objective of this work was to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of physalis peruviana fruits according to different sepal colors and the used training systems. the fruits were harvested and classified in five different sepal color groups: 1 (green), 2 (green-yellowish), 3 (yellow-greenish), 4 (yellow), 5 (yellow-brownish); and two training system groups: inverted "v" and triangular. the experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme 5x2 (sepal colors x drive systems). the experimental unit was composed of ten fruits, with each treatment repeated three times. the data were submitted to variance analysis (anova) by applying the tukey test at a 5% level of probability of error for the comparison of the means. the appraised variables were: fruit, sepals and total fresh mass, diameter, firmness, epidermis color, total soluble solids (tss), total titratable acidity (tta), the tss/tta ratio and ph. the triangular training system associated with yellow and yellowbrownish sepals resulted, respectively, in fruits with more sst and better tss/tta ratio. the highest mass and diameter values were obtained in cape-gooseberry fruits with yellow-brownish sepals, while the highest total mass was reached when sepals had yellow color. for sepals mass, the largest responses were obtained with the green sepals. from this physicochemical characterization we can conclude that cape-gooseberry picked g from the third color phase (yellow-greenish) present the best physiochemical characteristics in both assessed training systems.

Abstract: objective: to determine whether the guidelines put forth in the iii brazilian consensus on asthma management are being applied in a population of asthma patients treated at a public hospital that is a referral center for asthma in the city of porto alegre, brazil. methods: all adult asthma patients who began their treatment between 1999 and 2002 were evaluated. the treatment given was classified as consistent or inconsistent with the consensus guidelines. the clinical features of asthma and the frequency of treatment provided by a specialist were compared between the two groups (those receiving guideline-consistent treatment and those receiving guideline-inconsistent treatment). results: the charts of 357 patients were evaluated. the study sample consisted of 106 males (29.9%) and 251 females (70.3%). the mean age was 41 years, and 33 (9.2%) of the patients were smokers. the treatment was considered inconsistent with the consensus guidelines in 246 cases (70%). of those 246, 174 (71%) had presented persistent asthma and were not treated with an inhaled corticosteroid. normal forced expiratory volume in one second, being from 12 to 18 years of age, and having intermittent asthma were more frequently observed among the patients receiving guideline-consistent treatment (p < 0.01). no correlations were found between guideline-inconsistent treatment and being treated by a pulmonologist, severity of persistent asthma or number of emergency room visits. conclusion: most of the asthma patients treated at the public referral center in porto alegre did not receive treatment that was consistent with the consensus guidelines. undertreatment with inhaled corticosteroids was the principal source of that inconsistency.

Abstract: The legend for Figure 5, 'Comparison of end expiratory lung volume (EELV) measured by the helium dilution technique and the nitrogen washout/washin method', was incorrect and should read as follows:Comparison of end expiratory lung volume (EELV) measured by the helium dilution technique and the nitrogen washout/washin method. (a) The EELV measured by the helium dilution as a function of the EELV measured by nitrogen washout/washin method (EELV helium dilution = -111.85 + 0.89 × EELV GE, r2 = 0.82, p < 0.00001). (b) The Bland-Altman plot of the EELV measured with the nitrogen washout/washin technique and the EELV measured with the helium dilution method. The x-axis shows the mean of the two measurements and the y-axis shows the difference between the EELV measured by then helium dilution method and the nitrogen washout/washin method (average difference -229 ± 164 ml, limits of agreement -558 – 100 ml).The values in graph (a) of Figures 1, 4 and 5 had been plotted onto the incorrect axis. The panels in Figure 3 had been switched. Graph (a) should be the linear regression plot and graph (b) should be the Bland-Altman plot.

Abstract: Patients admitted to the general intensive care unit of Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico Mangiagalli Regina Elena requiring ventilatory support and, for clinical reasons, thoracic CT scanning were enrolled in this study. We performed two EELV measurements with the modified nitrogen washout/washin technique (increasing and decreasing inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2) by 10%), one EELV measurement with the helium dilution technique and a CT scan. All measurements were taken at 5 cmH2O airway pressure. Each CT scan slice was manually delineated and gas volume was computed with custom-made software.Thirty patients were enrolled (age = 66 +/- 10 years, body mass index = 26 +/- 18 Kg/m2, male/female ratio = 21/9, partial arterial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaO2)/FiO2 = 190 +/- 71). The EELV measured with the modified nitrogen washout/washin technique showed a very good correlation (r2 = 0.89) with the data computed from the CT with a bias of 94 +/- 143 ml (15 +/- 18%, p = 0.001), within the limits of accuracy declared by the manufacturer (20%). The bias was shown to be highly reproducible, either decreasing or increasing the FiO2 being 117+/-170 and 70+/-160 ml (p = 0.27), respectively. The EELV measured with the helium dilution method showed a good correlation with the CT scan data (r2 = 0.91) with a negative bias of 136 +/- 133 ml, and appeared to be more correct at low lung volumes. The EELV measurement with the helium dilution technique (at low volumes) and modified nitrogen washout/washin technique (at all lung volumes) correlates well with CT scanning and may be easily used in clinical practice.Current Controlled Trials NCT00405002.The damage induced by mechanical ventilation in cases of acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can be termed barotrauma [1], volotrauma [2,3], atelectrauma [4,5] or biotrauma [5,6] depending on the emphasis given to the pathogenic mechanism.
