Abstract: this article reports on the experiences of the human rights in schools project in the creation and conduction of a teacher education course aiming at the dissemination of the ideals and values of human rights, democracy and citizenship as guiding principles for each and every school practice, and not just for pedagogical discourses. it must be said that such objective constitutes a great challenge, given the historical features of the brazilian school and of the brazilian society at large. against the backdrop of that challenge, the text summarizes the principles, activities, and reflections resulting from the most significant experiences of the first three years of work of this project in schools belonging to the state and municipal networks in the cities of s?o paulo and osasco. among other things, this article presents the different forms assumed by the above-mentioned course given the difficulty in shaping activities capable of turning school's everyday practices into an object of reflection for those directly involved in the act of educating, as well as for the school institution as a whole. it also points out important features engendered by this teacher continuing education proposal in its search for answers to the challenges currently faced by the brazilian school in fulfilling its public role.

Abstract: the increase of fertigation techniques has not been followed by researches that generate available information to guide a correct fertigation management. the time-domain reflectometry allows the simultaneously monitoring of soil water content (q) and bulk electrical conductivity (cea). literature presents various models which relate tdr readings of q and cea to soil solution electrical conductivity (cew). nevertheless, many researches demonstrate the need for evaluation and calibration of these models under different soil conditions. in this work, six mathematical models were evaluated in order to establish the relationship among q, cea e cew. laboratory experiments were carried out using two soil materials, by means of applying five electrical conductivities combined with five soil water contents in pvc columns. the models allowed a reasonable relationship among q, cea e cew with better performance of de rhoades et al. (1976) e de vogeler et al. (1996) models for the soils 1 and 2, respectively.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of estimating the potassium (k) concentration in the soil solution, under laboratory conditions, for loamy (ctf) and sandy loam (ctfa ) soils, through models that relate soil water content (q), bulk electrical conductivity (cea) and soil solution electrical conductivity (cew). five potassium chloride solutions with electrical conductivities of 1.0, 2.5, 4.0, 5.5 and 7.0 ds m-1, were applied in a soil packed in pvc columns in order to obtain five soil water contents (17.0 ± 1.4, 19.0 ± 1.8, 21.4 ± 2.2, 23.4 ± 2.2 and 26.0 ± 3.0%, on volume basis). readings of q and cea were obtained by using time domain reflectometry (tdr) equipment and soil solution was extracted by a water sampler to determine cew and k. three models were fitted to the data by an electronic sheet. it is possible to estimate potassium concentration in the soil solution fromqand cea under laboratory conditions by the models of rhoades et al. (1976), vogeler et al. (1996) and mualen & friedman (1991) using a potential relationship between cew and k in the range of 0 to 60 and 0 to 120 mg l-1, for soils of ctf and ctfa, respectively.

Abstract: introduction: asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder which in severe cases changes the air flow, even in the period between episodes. objective: to evaluate, in asthmatic children under the effect of nebulized drug, the influence of upright sitting and leaning forward sitting postures, by assessing the intensity of the inspiratory and expiratory pressures (mip and mep) and peak expiratory flow (pef). methods: 57 children aged 6-12 years were divided in three groups: in group i, both postures, upright sitting and leaning forward sitting, were assessed without using nebulized drug; in group ii, only the upright sitting posture was assessed before and after nebulization; in group iii, only the leaning forward sitting posture was assessed before and after nebulization. the measures were repeated by assessing these children three times in a single session. a student t-test (pared) was used for comparisons. results: mip, mep and pef were higher in the leaning forward position indicating respective p values of p = 0.003, p = 0.006 and p = 0.000. after nebulization, the group ii demonstrated an increase of 44.16% in mip, 36.02% in pef and 34.88% in mep. after nebulization, the group iii showed a gain of 69.46% in mip, 60.87 in mep and 52.05% in pef. the difference between groups ii and iii were significant (p < 0.05) for levels of pef and mep, indicating that the group iii showed better performance during these tests. conclusion: it can be suggested that the leaning forward sitting posture provided an increased mechanical advantage for expiratory muscles, favoring the airflow during expiration and reducing the obstruction as evidenced by mep and pef increase.

Abstract: solar radiation at the earth's surface (rs) is one of the essential weather variables for several agro-environmental studies. in the absence of measured rs, it's possible to simulate them by models. using three years of daily rs data (2004-2006) collected by an inmet (brazilian meteorological service) automatic weather station installed in the municipality of cruz das almas, ba, three air temperature-based rs simulation models were evaluated. as a preliminary step, data quality was investigated and, when needed, adjustments were made based on clear sky solar radiation envelopes. the following models were evaluated: hargreaves-samani for both interior and coastal regions, thornton-running, and the weiss model. linear regression r2, mean ratio (mr), mean absolute error (mae), root mean square error (rmse), and the index of agreement of willmott (dw) were used for model performance evaluation against measured rs. the results recommended the coastal-region hargreaves-samani for prediction of rs in the reconcavo of bahia, brazil, since it presented the mr value closest to 1.00 (1.01), the lowest mae (2.54 mj m-2 d-1), the lowest rmse (3.13 mj m-2 d-1), and the highest dw (0.90).

Abstract: The effect of supplements of self feed on the digestive kinetic parameters and nutrient intake of crossbred steers grazing Brachiaria decumbens in the rainy season was evaluated. Four crossbred steers fistulated in the rumen, abomasum and esophagus were fed mineral salt (SAL) and supplements based on: urea, mineral mix, grounded corn grain and soybean meal (MFS); urea, mineral mix, soybean meal and corn gluten meal (FGFS); or urea, mineral mix, wheat bran and soybean meal (FTFS), with average protein content of 53.60%. No difference (P>0.05) was observed for the intakes of DM, OM, DM of pasture, OM of pasture, TC, NDF and NFC averaging 9.66, 9.14, 8.19, 7.33, 6.18, and 1.24 kg/day, respectively. However, significant (P<0.05) effects were observed for CP intake, and the supplemented animals showed higher (51%) CP intake than the control animals (SAL). No treatment effect on ruminal passage rate (L) averaging 0.0251 h-1 was observed. Average total retention time in the gastrointestinal tract (TMRT) was of 88.00 hours.

Abstract: several studies have investigated different injuries that occur among soccer players. however, it has been noticed that none has mentioned injury to the external obturator muscle. as a small and monoarticulated muscle, its incidence is probably low and barely documented in the literature. therefore, the aim of this study is to present four external obturator muscle strain cases in a professional soccer team in 2008. the data was collected from a database using the software sistema de prepara??o desportiva which provides data such as name, diagnosis, trauma mechanism, clinical history, time away from training and progress. all athletes who undertook magnetic resonance imaging (mri) of the external obturator muscle and presented rupture of the external obturator muscle were included in the study. four external obturator muscle strain injuries were identified from a total of twenty-eight muscle strains during the year of 2006. all athletes presented diffuse pain on the hip for medial and lateral rotation of the joint. the predominant injury mechanism was lateral rotation of the trunk over the femur on closed kinetic chain. it was concluded that external obturator muscle strain injuries can be mistaken for those related to the hip adductor muscles due to the reported pain area. clinical examination should be based on the athletes' report and functional tests, mainly for the hip rotator muscles. the mri scan was essential to the location, classification and evaluation of the injury size.

Crop Breeding and Applied Biotechnology , 2012,
Abstract: Plant genetic resources are the fuel for breeding, which in the search for higher yield and adapted genotypes, manipulates genes in order to meet the needs of farmers, and especially, of the current market. However, the use of accessions available in germplasm banks is low. Topics discussed in this paper emphasize the importance of plant genetic resources, and warn about problems related to genetic vulnerability; also, they discuss about aspects of costs involved in conservation and suggest recommendations for strengthening the area in Brazil.
