Abstract: the technique to generate transgenic mosquitoes requires adaptation for each target species because of aspects related to species biology, sensitivity to manipulation and rearing conditions. here we tested different parameters on the microinjection procedure in order to obtain a transgenic neotropical mosquito species. by using a transposon-based strategy we were able to successfully transform aedes fluviatilis (lutz), which can be used as an avian malaria model. these results demonstrate the usefulness of the piggybac transposable element as a transformation vector for neotropical mosquito species and opens up new research frontiers for south american mosquito vectors.

Abstract: The environmental impact of three different urban solid waste facilities (USWF) on the quality of the surface water. The studied areas were the Campo Belo sanitary landfill (Var es River), the controlled landfill of Santo Ant nio do Amparo (Fabiano River), and the closed dump of Elói Mendes (Mutuca River), which are cities located in southern Minas Gerais state, Brazil were evaluated. At each sampling point water samples were collected at five occasions in the raining season (October - March) and in the dry season (April - June) at three sampling points: (P1) upstream the solid waste facility, (P2) downstream nearby the point of influx from the sewage treatment plant in the sanitary landfill, or at the drainage point from the surface flow of the dump and controlled landfill, and (P3) downstream the solid waste facility. Physicochemical and bacteriological analyses were performed, and the results were analyzed based on descriptive statistics. The data were also compared with reference values from the National Environmental Council (CONAMA) Resolution 357/2005 and were used to calculate the water quality index (WQI). It was not possible to detect a significant effect of the solid waste facility on the water quality indicators. The water conditions were unsatisfactory due to violations of the concentrations of phosphorus, ammonia, fecal coliform, and the biochemical oxygen demand/chemical oxygen demand ratio (BOD/COD), probably related to other uses along the drainage area upstream the solid waste facility. These conditions were more critical in the Mutuca river, where the WQI was classified as bad during the entire period at all sampling points.
Coelho, Luciano Augusto de Toledo;
Psicologia & Sociedade , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-71822004000200011
Abstract: psychological tests are quite frequently used in selecting personnel for companies. this article seeks to compare such instruments with the worker's fundamental rights in mind. whenever a candidate for a job is subjected to a test, be that to measure his or her aptitude or to verify certain personality traits, over that instrument is incurred the knowledge of a science that legitimizes the employer's power to test the candidate. the job crisis generated from globalization and the hegemony of the neo-liberal capitalistic system, takes advantage of the ever-growing subjection of the worker. there are no laws in brazil that protect a candidate from the "leak" of information about his or her personality. and, in some cases, these factors, which can cause one to not be hired, could be considered discriminatory. such abusive personnel selection techniques and tests, which are not very trustworthy, increase the possibility of unnecessary disclosure and, consequently, a violation of privacy, private life and the disrespect of the constitutional principle of human dignity.
Subcontrata??o e informalidade na constru??o civil, no Brasil e na Fran?a
Costa, Luciano Rodrigues;
Caderno CRH , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-49792011000200012
Abstract: this paper presents a comparative analysis of the labor market of the construction industry in brazil and france, in a context of flexibility. this text, being the result of field research on construction sites in these two countries, discusses specifics of the informal labor contracts in the sector, which have produced a transfer of illegalities from large to small businesses. in the french case, through temporary agencies. in brazil, through small businesses underground, called "kittens." the perception of workers against such illegalities and their strategies to stay on the market are emphasized. in the french case, the work of illegal or semi-legal immigrants, made possible by temporary agencies. in brazil, it is clear that the industry has always been organized based on informality and seeks, gradually, to retain workers, even though informal work remains predominant.

Fólio : Revista de Letras , 2011,
Abstract: The present work discusses both critically and scientifically some aspects of the machine translation, such as: historical considerings, its current situation in the world of translation in general, its cultural, economic and, political implications etc. In its first part, the article presents an informative configuration, as a way to introduce the subject of machine translation for the students of foreign languages from free language courses and courses of under-graduation of languages and similar areas. In the second part, an analysis of the performance of the translator Babel Fish is made, both in its English-Portuguese and English-Spanish versions. Finally, it analyzes, comparatively, the performance of the English-Portuguese and English-Spanish versions of Babel Fish and then the Babel Fish translator is compared with the machine translator Power Translator, the machine translation software of Microsoft, when a better performance of this last one is observed. Finally, the nature of the electronic translation is commented, its technical perspectives in the short run, its insertion in the contemporary world and its importance as an invention capable to influence in the preservation of the natural languages.
