Abstract: growing peaches is of high economic importance in south of brazil and the state of rio grande do sul is the biggest brazilian producer. largest part of the orchards are located in the southern half. one of the main problems of peach production for fresh consumption in this area is the reduced size of the fruits. another problem is the short harvesting window, which brings difficulties to commercialization. girdling and/or ringing of branches might be used to increase fruti size and eventually extend the harvesting period. the present review intends to gather data regarding the most adequate period to apply treatments, to understand the physiological aspects and problems associated with these practices on stone fruit trees. girdling and ringing of stone fruit trees might be useful to improve quality and anticipate harvest period of early ripening cultivars. it is necessary to conduct local studies for different species and cultivars. recomendations should be specific for each situation and girdling and ringing together with other pratices to induce early ripening might help to anticipate harvest and ameliorate organoleptic of the fruit.

Abstract: in the production of plums (prunus salicina lindley) for in natura consumption the fruit size is a very important feature. fruit thinning is traditionally used to increase fruit size. girdling is a practice which is deserving renewed attention, since in many situations is useful to improve fruit size and to advance harvest. this study seeks to evaluate the effect of manual fruit thinning at intensities of 0, 25, 50, and 75% associated or not to trunk girdling (4 mm wide) on the growth, production and quality of plum cv. amarelinha. the experiment was carried out at the universidade federal do rio grande do sul experimental research station (southern brazil), during the growth season of 1995-96 (august - june). thinning was applied on october 16, 1995, 36 days after full bloom, and girdling seven days after thinning. thinning decreased total fruit yield proportionally to the applied intensity. trunk girdling anticipated harvesting, decreased fruit firmness, titratable acidity and increased the ratio total soluble solids: titratable acidity of fruits, but decreased the vigour and vegetative growth of the trees. none of treatments affected significantly the mean fruit weight.

Revista de Economia Contemporanea , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-98482006000200008
Abstract: this paper discusses the role of territorial proximity in the productive and innovative development process of firms inserted in local productive agglomeration. the main hypothesis tested considers the insertion of micro and small enterprises (mse) in local productive agglomeration increases the potential conditions for growth and better performance. with the purpose of identify and points out empirical evidences of questions discussed in the theoretical part, this work presents a case study of a concentration of firms in ilhéus, south of bahia - the productive concentration so called as technological park of ilhéus (t pi). based on this case study this paper discusses the characteristics and functionalities of this productive concentration taking as a start point the notion of arrangement and a local productive system. after identify the characteristics of an arrangement and a local productive system and to compare them with the main characteristics of the t pi, it is possible to say that the t pi only can be classified as a local productive arrangement, due to the incipient and fragile relationships among the gents involved. then, the t pi cannot be properly classified as a local productive system.
The Hazards of Misusing the Smart Contract: An AHP Approach to Its Risk  [PDF]
Romulo Luciano
Journal of Information Security (JIS) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/jis.2019.101002
Abstract: This article explores four critical groups of systematic risk embedded in smart contract employment using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). The four principal risk analysis groups include: 1) transparency in the light of corporate governance 2) IT security 3) contract management automation and 4) legality. The AHP assists both decision-makers and stakeholders alike in the evaluation process essential for identifying potential technological constraints posed within a permissioned blockchain environment using peer-to-peer format in the absence of digital currency. Based upon critical assessment, the AHP methodology enables pairwise comparisons among different features and consequently increases the knowledge regarding these attributes in light of the software’s risk assessment.
O revivescimento da aprendizagem?
Hamilton, David;
Educa??o & Sociedade , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-73302002000200011
Abstract: this article is a provocation. it focuses on the learning society, its substance and rhetoric. protagonists of the learning society advance the idea that schooling is dying, and that education should undergo re-engineering. a new infrastructure is proposed around the concept of on-line learning. this vision of the learning society suffers, however, from at least three defects. first, it assumes that what can be imagined can be delivered; secondly, that making something work is as simple as designing an infrastructure; and finally, that the learning society can escape from the power relations that also marked its predecessors.
Prospects of Forward Energy Flow and Low-x Physics at the LHC
Hamilton, Andrew
High Energy Physics - Phenomenology , 2007,
Abstract: The LHC will soon provide proton-proton collisions at the unprecedented center of mass energy, $\sqrt{s}=$14 TeV. This not only allows us to probe new regions of high-$p_T$ physics, but also low-$x$ and forward physics. A selection of potential measurements are described to outline the prospects for low-$x$ and forward physics in the ATLAS, CMS, TOTEM, and LHCf experiments.

Relinquishing the Practices of a Lifetime: Observations on ageing, caring and literacies
Mary Hamilton
Literacy and Numeracy Studies , 2009,
Abstract: This paper draws on ethnographic and case study data from a variety of sources to explore the changing social practices of literacy across the lifespan. It explores the new literacy demands that people encounter with age when dealing with life events in a range of social domains. These include increased leisure; travel; changing family and peer relationships as a result of death and loss; issues of health and disability and accessing new technologies. It reveals how literacy is implicated in peoples' changing sense of time, place and history; how the older person’s identity as a literate actor may be interrupted by both institutional and informal processes of caring and their disengagement from spheres of activity that were previously central markers of their identity. Ageing thus involves both expansion and retreat from familiar literacy practices.
