New series of Portuguese population and employment, 1950-2007: implications for GDP per capita and labor productivity
Amaral,Luciano;
Análise Social , 2009,
Abstract: the two most important international databases with portuguese gdp per capita and productivity from the 1950s onwards (ggdc and ameco) offer two contrasting pictures of its evolution, especially during the slowdown of 1973 to the mid-1980s. the main problem is the low quality of the underlying data for population and employment. this paper offers new estimates for population and employment and recalculates gdp per capita and productivity between 1950 and 2007. although confirming the main idea advanced in ggdc (a similar slowdown of gdp per capita and productivity), the series are different, and should be viewed as the new benchmark for the portuguese economy

Abstract: as permanent features of history, financial crises have preceded and will therefore also outlive capitalism. nevertheless, there are types of credit, debt and crisis that are specific to the capitalist system. even before large capitalist companies started to borrow large amounts of credit, states felt this necessity. as in past cases, the present crisis results from a combination of legislative changes, monetary policies, relaxation of supervision as well as of credit concession criteria, and credit growth through the adoption of new instruments.

Institutions, property and, and economic growth: Back to the passage from the Ancien Régime to liberalism in Portugal Institui es, propriedade e crescimento económico: de regresso à passagem do Antigo Regime para o liberalismo em Portugal
Luciano Amaral
Análise Social , 2012,
Abstract: The liberal revolution was the biggest institutional breaking point in Portuguese history. It created the modern state and modern private property. This change was particularly complex in Portugal due to the peculiar nature of the country’s Ancien Régime. The aristocracy was excessively dependent on service to the Crown, thus keeping it as an un-entrepreneurial class, and leading to the underdevelopment of property rights. The nineteenth century was, thus, mostly a period of transition, where the difficulties in destroying the old organization and creating a new one were daunting. But once it was done the Portuguese economy started showing relatively robust signs of growth.

As permanent features of History, financial crises have preceded and will therefore also outlive capitalism.

Abstract: A loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for the diagnosis of Citrus Bacterial Canker (CBC-LAMP) was developed and evaluated. DNA samples were obtained from infected plants or cultured bacteria. A typical ladder-like pattern on gel electrophoresis was observed in all positive samples in contrast to the negative controls. In addition, amplification products were detected by visual inspection using SYBRGreen and using a lateral flow dipstick, eliminating the need for gel electrophoresis. The sensitivity and specificity of the assay were evaluated in different conditions and using several sample sources which included purified DNA, bacterium culture and infected plant tissue. The sensitivity of the CBC-LAMP was 10 fg of pure Xcc DNA, 5 CFU in culture samples and 18 CFU in samples of infected plant tissue. No cross reaction was observed with DNA of other phytopathogenic bacteria. The assay was capable of detecting CBC-causing strains from several geographical origins and pathotypes.The CBC-LAMP technique is a simple, fast, sensitive and specific method for the diagnosis of Citrus Bacterial Canker. This method can be useful in the phytosanitary programs of the citrus industry worldwide.Citrus Bacterial Canker is an economic important disease in several countries, and causes great losses in fruit production and its subsidiaries [1]. There are three types of Citrus Bacterial Canker identified that have different genotypes and posses variations in host range among citrus plants. The type A CBC originating from Asia, is caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri, this is the most destructive and widespread variant of the disease with a host range that includes all citrus cultivars [2]. The CBC types B and C are caused by Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. aurantifolii strains B and C, respectively. Those bacteria are limited in host range and are geographically restricted to South America. Type B CBC is present only in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay and is found primarily on le
