Abstract: a diplectanid monogenean, acleotrema lamothei n. sp., is described from the gills of the yellow sea chub kyphosus incisor (cuvier, 1831) in brazilian waters off rio de janeiro state. this species is distinguished by the facts that the male copulatory organ is armed with spines throughout most of its length, the ventral hamuli have a very long, stout outer root, which is slightly notched proximally, an inner root less than half the length of the outer root and a fine blade and point. it also differs from most species of the genus by the greater size of the haptor and its hard parts. this is the first record of a species of acleotrema johnston and tiegs, 1922 from south american waters.

Se describe Acleotrema lamothei n. sp. de las branquias del pez Kyphosus incisor (Cuvier, 1831) recolectado en las costas del estado de Río de Janeiro, Brasil. La nueva especie se distingue por la armadura del órgano copulador con espinas en casi toda su longitud, por la presencia de una raíz externa larga y robusta en el hámuli ventral, provista de una peque a muesca proximal, por la raíz interna que mide menos de la mitad de la longitud de la externa y por tener la hoja y la punta finas. Asimismo, difiere de muchas de las especies del género por el gran tama o del haptor y de sus partes esclerozadas. El presente constituye el primer registro de una especie de Acleotrema Johnston y Tiegs, 1922 en aguas sudamericanas.
Traffic Impacts on Fine Particulate Matter Air Pollution at the Urban Project Scale: A Quantitative Assessment  [PDF]

Abstract:

Formal health impact assessment (HIA), currently underused in the United States, is a relatively new process for assisting decision-makers in non-health sectors by estimating the expected public health impacts of policy and planning decisions. In this paper we quantify the expected air quality impacts of increased traffic due to a proposed new university campus extension in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In so doing, we build the evidence base for quantitative HIA in the United States and develop an improved approach for forecasting traffic effects on exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in air. Very few previous US HIAs have quantified health impacts and instead have relied on stakeholder intuition to decide whether effects will be positive, negative, or neutral. Our method uses an air dispersion model known as CAL3QHCR to predict changes in exposure to airborne, traffic-related PM2.5 that could occur due to the proposed new campus development. We employ CAL3QHCR in a new way to better represent variability in road grade, vehicle driving patterns (speed, acceleration, deceleration, and idling), and meteorology. In a comparison of model predictions to measured PM2.5 concentrations, we found that the model estimated PM2.5 dispersion to within a factor of two for 75% of data points, which is within the typical benchmark used for model performance evaluation. Applying the model to present-day conditions in the study area, we found that current traffic contributes a relatively small amount to ambient PM2.5 concentrations: about 0.14 μg/m3 in the most exposed neighborhood—relatively low in comparison to the current US National Ambient Air Quality Standard of 12 μg/m3. Notably, even though the new campus is expected to bring an additional 40,000 daily trips to the study community by the year 2025, vehicle-related PM2.5 emissions are expected to decrease compared to current conditions due to anticipated improvements in vehicle technologies and cleaner fuels.

Abstract: Der vorliegende Artikel arbeitet methodologische Probleme heraus, die entstehen, wenn bei der Analyse von schriftlichen, asynchronen Online-Diskussionen "Kultur" und "Interkulturalit t" als interaktiv darstellbare und beobachtbare Ph nomene behandelt werden. Insbesondere wird untersucht, wie die Konversationsanalyse mit ihrem Fokus auf Sequenzialit t und das Konzept der Zugeh rigkeitskategorisierungen die Analyse von Kultur als verschriftlichte, interaktive Leistung unterstützen k nnte. Im Beitrag wird dargelegt, dass trotz der offensichtlichen Unterschiede zwischen sequenziellen mündlichen Gespr chen und verschriftlichten Online-Diskussionen durch die Konversationsanalyse interessante Methoden bereitgestellt werden, um Online-Diskussionen zu analysieren. Die beiden Aspekte der Sequenzialit t und der Zugeh rigkeitskategorien sind dabei hilfreich, um anhand von Verschriftlichungen in Online-Foren die Konstruktion sichtbarer und als solche erkennbare, interkulturelle Diskurspraktiken nachzuzeichnen. In particular, the paper explores the ways that conversation analysis (CA) and its focus on sequentiality and membership categorization analysis might aid the analysis of culture as a textural interactional achievement. The paper argues that, while there are some clear differences between sequential talk and written asynchronous discourse, there are still interesting ways in which CA's analytic foci may be worked through in relation to online discourse. Both the concern with sequentiality and with membership categories may well help us to see how the construction of visible and recognizable intercultural discourse practices are accomplished through written modes in online forums. Extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness as a mechanism of post infectious cough: case report

Abstract: We report a case of chronic cough after Mycoplasma pneumoniae lower respiratory tract infection with extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness as the cough mechanism. Extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness may be a common mechanism in post-infectious cough which may be useful both diagnostically and therapeutically since chronic cough with extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness responds to speech pathology treatment.Post-infectious cough is a common diagnosis, especially in primary care settings, although a specific infectious aetiology is rarely confirmed. Aside from pertussis, the role of other infectious agents in chronic cough is poorly understood. In specialist clinics chronic cough occurs in association with asthma, rhinitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux (GERD), and ACE inhibitor use [1]. However, even in these settings, a respiratory infection is often reported at the onset of chronic cough. Extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness (EAHR) represents variable extrathoracic airflow obstruction following inhalation provocation testing [2-6]. It manifests as a fall in inspiratory airflow during challenge with histamine, exercise, or hypertonic saline. EAHR is a feature of cough due to ACE inhibitor use [2], rhinosinusitis [3,4] and GERD [5], and possibly asthma [6]. The mechanism of post-infectious cough is not known, however, upper airway sensory hyperresponsiveness might be one important mechanism in driving cough in some entities of CC [7] and this current case suggests that EAHR may be a useful objective marker and relevant mechanism in post infectious cough.A 60 year old non-smoking male presented to the Emergency Department with a non-productive cough and cold symptoms. Abstract: We re-examine the puzzling $\pi^+$ emission from the weak decay of $^4_\Lambda$He and propose an explanation in terms of a three-body decay of the virtual $\Sigma^+$. Such a resolution of the $\pi^+$ decay puzzle is consistent with the calculated $\Sigma^+$ probability in light $\Lambda$ hypernuclei as well as the experimentally observed $\pi^+$ energy spectrum and $s$--wave angular distribution.
Immunometabolism in Obese Asthmatics: Are We There Yet?

Abstract: Obesity is now recognised as a worldwide epidemic. The recent International Association for the Study of Obesity/International Obesity Taskforce (IASO/IOTF) analysis estimates that approximately 1.0 billion adults are currently overweight and a further 475 million are obese. Obesity has huge psychosocial impact with obese children and adolescents facing discrimination and stigmatization in many areas of their lives leading to body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem and depression. Indeed, obesity is recognised as an important risk factor for the development of several chronic diseases such as hypertension, cancer, asthma and metabolic syndrome. Chronic low grade systemic inflammation is considered as a hallmark of obesity and may possibly explain the link between obesity and chronic disease, in particular the increased incidence, prevalence and severity of asthma in obese individuals. There is now strong evidence for infiltration of immune and inflammatory cells into adipose tissue that drives systemic inflammation and subsequent end organ damage. In addition to adipocytes, the key adipose tissue resident immune cells are macrophages and mast cells. Immunometabolism, as an emerging field of investigation, explores the pivotal role of these immune cells in translating immunological changes to metabolic effects in obesity. Abundance of free fatty acids, along with other inflammatory cytokines shift the balance of metabolic homeostasis to pro-inflammatory status by influencing the development of inflammatory cell lineage, which, further exhibits distinct functional phenotypes. There is emerging evidence for macrophage activation and functional polarization of an anti-inflammatory M 2 phenotype towards a pro-inflammatory M 1 phenotype of macrophages in obese adipose tissue. Similarly, studies in both obese humans and murine models reveal the pathognomic presence of an increased number of mast cells in visceral adipose tissue. These suggest a possible contribution of mast cells to the unique metabolome of obese asthma. This review examines proposed multilevel interactions between metabolic and immune systems in obese asthmatics that underlie the negative effects of obesity and may offer significant therapeutic promise.

Abstract: We present a practical numerical technique for calculating tunneling ionization rates from arbitrary 1-D potential wells in the presence of a linear external potential by determining the widths of the resonances in the spectral density, rho(E), adiabatically connected to the field-free bound states. While this technique applies to more general external potentials, we focus on the ionization of electrons from atoms and molecules by DC electric fields, as this has an important and immediate impact on the understanding of the multiphoton ionization of molecules in strong laser fields.
Chronic cough and laryngeal dysfunction improve with specific treatment of cough and paradoxical vocal fold movement

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate effects of therapy for chronic cough and paradoxical vocal fold movement.Adults with chronic cough (n = 24) were assessed before and after treatment for chronic persistent cough by measuring quality of life, extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness to hypertonic saline provocation, capsaicin cough reflex hypersensitivity and fibreoptic laryngoscopy to observe paradoxical vocal fold movement. Subjects with chronic cough were classified into those with (n = 14) or without (n = 10) paradoxical vocal fold movement based on direct observation at laryngoscopy.Following treatment there was a significant improvement in cough related quality of life and cough reflex sensitivity in both groups. Subjects with chronic cough and paradoxical vocal fold movement also had additional improvements in extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness and paradoxical vocal fold movement. The degree of improvement in cough reflex sensitivity correlated with the improvement in extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness.Laryngeal dysfunction is common in chronic persistent cough, where it is manifest as paradoxical vocal fold movement and extrathoracic airway hyperresponsiveness. Successful treatment for chronic persistent cough leads to improvements in these features of laryngeal dysfunction.Chronic persistent cough is responsible for a significant illness burden in the community [1]. Laryngeal problems are increasingly recognized as being part of the chronic cough syndrome, and include voice symptoms such as dysphonia [2], hyperresponsiveness of the extrathoracic airway with enhanced glottic stop reflex [3], reduced inspiratory airflow following a provocation stimulus [4-6], and paradoxical vocal fold movement (PVFM) where the vocal folds paradoxically adduct during inspiration [7,8].
