Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1998,
Abstract: In the study of conjunctivitis outbreaks occurring from September 1994 to September 1996 in the region of Ribeir o Preto, conjunctival exudates of 92 patients were cultivated in Instituto Adolfo Lutz Laboratory I, Ribeir o Preto. Most cases occurred in the age range 2-7 years. The etiological agents which were most frequently isolated from the analyzed cases were: Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, in 40.22% and 21.74%, respectively. 51.35% of the S. pneumoniae isolated strains were not typable. The oxacillin-resistant S. pneumoniae strains were submitted to the minimum inhibitory concentration test (MIC) and three of them presented intermediate resistance, whereas only one was highly resistant to penicillin.
Dysfunction of the peripheral and central auditory pathway in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus  [PDF]
Luciene C. Fernandes, Luciana Casais-Silva, Ana Marice Ladeia
Journal of Diabetes Mellitus (JDM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jdm.2012.21012
Abstract: Although auditory alterations are not a typical symptom of diabetes mellitus (DM), they can occur in patients with type 1 DM. The findings of previous studies are controversial, because the frequency and degree of hearing loss varies, and quite often alterations are still subclinical. The typical test used to detect and manage hearing loss is the audiogram, but this test alone is only capable of detecting alterations due to injury of the inner hair cells and/or alterations in the central auditory pathway. However, auditory alterations resulting from a dysfunction that is still subclinical are only able to be detected through electrophysiological auditory tests, such as the otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and the auditory brainstem response (ABR) tests. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to review the studies that utilize the OAE and ABR tests, and to verify if the dysfunction is cochlear and/or neural in patients with type 1 DM. The findings of this review demonstrate that patients with type 1 DM can have auditory alterations stemming from a central cochlear origin. Following this finding, early diagnosis is very important in order to implement preventative treatments and initiate therapy.

Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982005000600018
Abstract: this work was conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of whole soybean submitted to different processing. four trials were conducted to determine digestibility coefficients of dry matter (dcdm), ether extract (dcee) and amino acids and the values of apparent and true metabolizable energy of the whole deactivated soybean processed by steam heated (wds) and whole extruded soybean (wes) compared to a mixture of soybean meal plus soybean oil (smo) and soybean meal plus soybean acid oil (smao). the trials one and two were conducted by using the total collection of excreta method with chicks and roosters, respectively. in the trials three and four, the force-feeding method with intact and cecectomized roosters, respectively, were used. the dcdm, dcee and metabolizable energy determined by using roosters were higher than that determined with chicks. the dcdm, cdee and metabolizable were higher for smo, followed by wse, smao and wds. the dcms, dcee and metabolizable energy of wse were higher than those of wds. the amino acids digestibility coefficients did not differ for soybeans. the processing of whole soybeans promoted different values in the metabolizable energy of soybeans, which varied also with the bird age.

Abstract: The spontaneous and reversible formation of foci and filaments that contain proteins involved in different metabolic processes is common in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm. Stress granules (SGs) and processing bodies (PBs) belong to a novel family of cellular structures collectively known as mRNA silencing foci that harbour repressed mRNAs and their associated proteins. SGs and PBs are highly dynamic and they form upon stress and dissolve thus releasing the repressed mRNAs according to changes in cell physiology. In addition, aggregates containing abnormal proteins are frequent in neurodegenerative disorders. In spite of the growing relevance of these supramolecular aggregates to diverse cellular functions a reliable automated tool for their systematic analysis is lacking. Here we report a MATLAB Script termed BUHO for the high-throughput image analysis of cellular foci. We used BUHO to assess the number, size and distribution of distinct objects with minimal deviation from manually obtained parameters. BUHO successfully addressed the induction of both SGs and PBs in mammalian and insect cells exposed to different stress stimuli. We also used BUHO to assess the dynamics of specific mRNA-silencing foci termed Smaug 1 foci (S-foci) in primary neurons upon synaptic stimulation. Finally, we used BUHO to analyze the role of candidate genes on SG formation in an RNAi-based experiment. We found that FAK56D, GCN2 and PP1 govern SG formation. The role of PP1 is conserved in mammalian cells as judged by the effect of the PP1 inhibitor salubrinal, and involves dephosphorylation of the translation factor eIF2α. All these experiments were analyzed manually and by BUHO and the results differed in less than 5% of the average value. The automated analysis by this user-friendly method will allow high-throughput image processing in short times by providing a robust, flexible and reliable alternative to the laborious and sometimes unfeasible visual scrutiny.
Violência e seguran?a: um olhar sobre a Fran?a e o Brasil
Neme, Cristina;
Revista de Sociologia e Política , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-44782005000200010
Abstract: this article proposes a reflection on the issue of safety/unsafety in france and brazil. if on the one hand it may seem hard to draw parallels between social realities that are so different, on the other, it seems true that attempts at comparison may help to identify some convergences and point toward some common topics for an approach to this very complex social problem in both countries. in france as in brazil, the question of safety has a visible presence in public debate and has become a political concern at different levels of government. through a brief outline of the meaning of the phenomenon of violence in both countries, the discussion of debates on the french experience in the area of prevention and security and the brazilian experience in the area of public safety and human rights, it becomes possible to construct some reflections on issues that are common to these very different social realities.
Diagnóstico municipal de la violencia y la criminalidad en Jundiaí, S?o Paulo
Neme,Cristina;
Salud Pública de México , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-36342008000700005
Abstract: objective: this article presents the results of a violence and criminality diagnosis in the municipality of jundiaí, s?o paulo. material and methods: official data on external mortality for the duration of the 1997-2003 period were analysed as well as criminal occurrences in the municipality during the 2001-2005 period in order to estimate their magnitude and distribution both across the population and on space. an opinion poll was carried out and qualitative data were produced through focus groups with the population and public security professionals. results: it was verified that traffic accidents are the main cause of violent mortality in the municipality followed by homicides. it was further established that the victims are mainly young males. conclusions: additionally, official sources present limitations to the elaboration of a deepened analysis given that popular perceptions of specific problems, particularly drugs traffic, school violence and crimes against property reveal under-notification or even inexistence of consistent data on these phenomena.
