Pinto, Luciana Wernersbach;Nunes, Estev?o Portela;
Revista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia , 2011, DOI: 10.5581/1516-8484.20110018
Abstract: both multicentric castleman disease and kaposi sarcoma are more frequently observed in hiv infected patients. the coexistence of these human herpesvirus 8 related lesions, in the same tissue, has been observed, but literature reports are scant. on the other hand, the expression of hhv-8-lana-1 is easily demonstrable by immunohistochemistry. this has been shown to be a powerful tool for the diagnosis of these entities. the aim of this report is to communicate our experience with a case of multicentric castleman disease occurring in the setting of hiv infection, which demonstrated microscopic kaposi sarcoma in the same lymph node during the pathological work-up
Health, sleep and lack of time: relations to domestic and paid work in nurses
Portela,Luciana Fernandes; Rotenberg,Lúcia; Waissmann,William;
Revista de Saúde Pública , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-89102005000500016
Abstract: objective: to assess whether reported morbidity and complaints of lack of time and sleep are associated with the burden of professional work and housework among nurses. methods: a cross-sectional exploratory study was carried out among female nurses and nurse assistants (n=206) of a public hospital in rio de janeiro, brazil. data were collected by means of a questionnaire. the prevalence ratio and 95% confidence intervals were estimated. results: mean duration of professional work and housework time was 40.4 and 31.6 hours/week, respectively. long professional working time (over 44 hours/week) were associated with mild emotional disorders (pr=1.37; 95% ci: 1.05-1.80), complaints of lack of time for resting/leisure (pr=1.61; 95% ci: 1.31-1.97), housework (pr=1.48; 95% ci: 1.12-1.97), and childcare (pr=1.99; 95% ci: 1.51-2.63). long housework time (over 28 hours/week) was associated with lower prevalence of lack of time for childcare (pr=0.62; 95% ci: 0.46-0.84). high housework load was associated with lack of personal time and complaints of varicose veins (pr=1.31; 95% ci: 1.14-1.50 and pr=1.31; 95% ci: 1.08-1.58, respectively). complaints of varicose veins were also frequent among female nurses with a total work load above 84 hours (pr=1.30; 95% ci: 1.05-1.61), though this group has shown a lower prevalence of arterial hypertension and recurrent headaches (pr=0.35; 95% ci: 0.15-0.83 and pr=0.53; 95% ci: 0.32-0.89, respectively). conclusions: results suggest that both professional and home environments are relevant in the evaluation of work overload on nurses' health and their family and social life. it is stressed the need for instruments for analyzing total workload among female populations.

Rotenberg, Lúcia;Portela, Luciana Fernandes;Marcondes, Willer Baumgartem;Moreno, Cláudia;Nascimento, Cristiano de Paula;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2001, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2001000300018
Abstract: this paper deals with the impact of night work from a gender perspective, through a field study at a factory employing men and women on the night shift. it is based on data for hours of sleep over the course of several weeks, socio-demographic data,, and job information, using a semi-structured interview. the methodology includes chronobiological aspects of sleep (mainly quantitative data) and workers' discourse concerning gender-related experiences in the day-to-night switch. despite gender issues and differences in daily life, the switch is perceived quite vividly by both men and women, permeating several aspects of life, like health, leisure, studies, and intimate personal relations. quantitative sleep analysis showed more severe effects of night work on women, especially those with children. such sleep patterns were associated with different expectations among men and women, revealing gender issues that are essential for understanding the reality of individuals who work odd hours.

International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health , 2013, DOI: 10.3390/ijerph10126397
Abstract: Evidence suggests that the workplace plays an important etiologic role in blood pressure (BP) alterations. Associations in female samples are controversial, and the domestic environment is hypothesized to be an important factor in this relationship. This study assessed the association between job strain and BP within a sample of female nursing workers, considering the potential role of domestic overload. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a group of 175 daytime workers who wore an ambulatory BP monitor for 24 h during a working day. Mean systolic and diastolic BP were calculated. Job strain was evaluated using the Demand-Control Model. Domestic overload was based on the level of responsibility in relation to four household tasks and on the number of beneficiaries. After adjustments no significant association between high job strain and BP was detected. Stratified analyses revealed that women exposed to both domestic overload and high job strain had higher systolic BP at home. These results indicate a possible interaction between domestic overload and job strain on BP levels and revealed the importance of domestic work, which is rarely considered in studies of female workers.

A economia ou é solidária ou é fratricida The Economy is Either Solidary or Fratricidal L’économie: soit elle est solidaire, soit elle est fratricide

Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais , 2012, DOI: 10.4000/rccs.412
Abstract: O texto pensa a no o de economia solidária a partir do ch o. This text reflects on the notion of the solidarity economy from the ground up. I begin by considering two public-benefit NGOs (ANDC and Life and Peace Community), whose action and economy cross paths with four micro-entrepreneurs and their units, all differing greatly one from the other: two small businesses are run by women and two others by men, one of whom is an immigrant. Then, inductively, a more in-depth reflection is put forward based on two aspects: both the solidarities observed in the familial and socio-political contexts of the micro-entrepreneurs and the economies of their units and the NGOs which supported them. I conclude that solidarity is a plural notion (altruistic, familialist, associational and statal) and that the economy is either “political economy,” as was the case when it emerged, or an ideological notion which denies life and people in loco and in terra mundi. That is to say, the economy is either solidary or fratricidal.
