Genetics and Molecular Biology , 2002, DOI: 10.1590/S1415-47572002000400001
Abstract: the glutathione s-transferase mu (gstm1) gene which acts during phase ii of xenobiotic metabolism is polymorphic in the population, being absent in about 30-50% of individuals depending on the ethnic group from which they come. epidemiological studies suggest that individuals who are homozygous null at the gstm1 locus may have an increased risk of developing various types of neoplastic disease. we used the polymerase chain reaction (pcr) to estimate the frequency of gstm1 in 176 healthy individuals from the north of paraná (brazilian state), the null genotype being detected in 48.86% of these individuals. the student?s t-test was used to evaluate the frequency of the glutathione s-transferase null genotype in relation to age, gender and smoking habit and no significant differences were found. in our sample there were 142 individuals of caucasian origin, of which 47.88% had the null genotype. when applied to the caucasian group only (n = 142) the student?s t-test again showed no significant differences between the frequency of the gstm1 null genotype and age, gender and smoking habit.

Dental Press Journal of Orthodontics , 2012,
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Tooth movement is initially characterized by an acute sterile inflammation, followed by sequential multiple reactions in the periodontal ligament in response to biomechanical forces. Pharmacological agents such as corticosteroids may affect the course of orthodontic movement. Scientific studies show antagonistic actions of these drugs on bone resorption during tooth movement. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature about the effect of corticosteroids on orthodontic tooth movement. CONCLUSION: Patients should be questioned regarding the use of these drugs in the orthodontic practice and for those who use them, the orthodontic treatment should be differentiated, with longer intervals between visits and periodic X-rays due to the delay in bone formation observed in some scientific studies.

Journal of International Dental and Medical Research , 2011,
Abstract: Immature and mature collagens presents in oral lesions of rat were evaluated. Oral ulcer was chemically produced on the tongue of 56 male rats and, then, treated by topic application of solution of propolis (experimental group) and saline solution (control group). The animals were treated for seven days and sacrificed at 2nd, 7th, 14th, and 21th days. Samples of the treated area were processed in laboratory and stained by picrosirius. Mean areas of immature collagen in the experimental group at 2nd, 7th, 14th, and 21th days were, respectively, 60.41 μm ± 18.3, 67.2 μm ± 16.2, 90.77 μm ± 6.64 and 56.48 μm ± 7.56. Mean areas of mature collagen evaluated for this same time were: 39.58 μm ± 18.31, 32.8 μm ± 16.2, 9.23 μm ± 6.64 and 43.53 μm ± 7.56. There was a significant difference between the mean areas of mature and immature collagens between groups at 2nd and 14th days (Tukey’s test, p≤0.05). Propolis used in this study had contributed positively to the wound healing of oral ulcers of rats, probably, due to concentration and alcoholic vehicle.

Abstract: This work aimed to study the quality of frozen pulp, manufactured and marketed in Boa Vista - RR, through physico-chemical analysis. It were selected six Agroindustries that produce and market pulp in establishments located in Fair Passar o, supermarkets and home of juices, identified by the letters A, B, C, D, E and F. The variables studied were: soluble solids, titratable acidity and vitamin C, of the flavors: acerola, caja, cupua u, guava, soursop and passion fruit. The experiment was conducted in completely randomized design, being analyzed six brands of fruits pulps and six different fruits, with three replicates. The observed results demonstrate that none of the companies processing fruit pulp detail their identification inaccordance with the legislation. In the variables studied, only the cupua u pulp brands C and D and soursop brands B, C, D and E were in accordance with the technical regulation for fixing the identity and quality standard. Considering the variables in question, it was found that variations in the levels encountered and not adequacy of these standards could be minimized by the standardization of raw materials and processes used. Abstract: outbreaks caused by vaccine-derived polioviruses are challenging the final eradication of paralytic poliomyelitis. therefore, the surveillance of the acute flaccid paralysis cases based on poliovirus isolation and characterization remains an essential activity. due to the use of trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (opv), mixtures containing more than one serotype of sabin-related polioviruses are frequently isolated from clinical samples. because each poliovirus isolate needs to be individually analyzed, we designed polymerase chain reaction primers that can selectively distinguish and amplify a genomic segment of the three sabin-related poliovirus serotypes present in mixtures, thus, optimizing the diagnosis and providing prompt information to support epidemiologic actions.
