Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492006000400028
Abstract: interferon and ribavirin are medications widely used in the treatment of some systemic diseases, mainly hepatitis c. ribavirin when associated with interferon increases the rate of success of this treatment. there are about 170 million patients with chronic hepatitis c in the world, many in use of these medications. the classic associated retinopathy is described as cotton wool exudates and hemorrhages. since the first reports, several different ocular disturbances were described in association with interferon. the present case shows a patient whose right eye presented with central retinal vein occlusion and whose left eye presented the typical findings of hemorrhages; prompt resolution after the medications were discontinued.

Abstract: the objective of this study was to describe situations related to sexual health of adolescents, according to the national survey of school health (pense). it is a cross-sectional study performed by the brazilian institute of geography and statistics (ibge), in partnership with the ministry of health that involved 60,973 students and 1,453 public and private schools. data analysis points out that 30.5% (95%ci 29.9-31.2) of the adolescents had already had sexual relations sometime in their lives, being more frequent for males (43.7%; 95%ci 42.7-44.7) than females (18.7%; 95%ci 18.0-19.4), especially those who go to public schools (33.1%; 95%ci 32.4-33.9), aged 15 years or older (47.3%; 95%ci 45.7-48.9) and 16 years (63.5%; 95%ci 61,5-65.4). the sexual initiation age was early and 40.1% (95%ci 38.8-41.4) reported having had only one partner in life. the use of condoms in the last sexual relation was high both for protective (75.9%; ci95% 74.8-76.9) and contraceptive methods (74.7%; 95%ci 73.6-75.7). it is necessary to emphasize actions for promoting sexual health towards adolescents in order to minimize vulnerabilities.

Abstract: the aim of this study is to identify and describe the occurrence of bullying among students in the 9th year (8th grade) from public and private schools from 26 brazilian state capitals and the federal district. it is a cross-sectional study involving 60,973 students and 1,453 public and private schools. data analysis indicates that 5.4% (ic95%: 5.1%-5.7%) of students reported having suffered bullying almost always or always in the last 30 days, 25.4% (ic95%: 24.8%-26.0%) were rarely or sometimes the victim of bullying and 69.2% (ic95%: 68.5%-69.8%) of students felt no humiliation or provocation at school. the capital with higher frequency of bullying was belo horizonte (6.9%; ic95%: 5,9%-7,9%), minas gerais, and the lowest was palmas (3.5%; ic95%: 2.6%-4.5%), tocantins. boys reported more bullying (6,0%; ic95%: 5.5%-6.5%) compared with girls (4,8%; ic95%: 4.4%-5.3%). there was no difference between public schools 5.5% (ic95%: 5.1%-5.8%) and private (5.2%) (ic95%: 4.6%-5.8%), except in aracaju, sergipe, that show more bullying in private schools. the findings indicate an urgent need for intersectoral action from educational policies and practices that enforce the reduction and prevention of the occurrence of bullying in schools in brazil.

Abstract: adolescence is typically a developmental phase characterized by change and experimentation and therefore varying exposure to health hazards. we aimed at estimating the prevalence of protective and risk health behaviors of adolescents interviewed in the 2009 national adolescent school-based health survey (pense). pense, a partnership between the instituto brasileiro de geografia e estatística (ibge) and the ministry of health, using a pda-based self-administered questionnaire collected information on 60,973 students enrolled at 1,453 public and private schools in the 27 state capitals and the federal district. results: among the food items most often consumed (>=5 days per week), were beans (62.6%) and fruit (31.5%), but also sweets (58.3%) and soft drinks (37%), 43.1% of the students were sufficiently physically active but 79.5% spent >2 hours per day in front of the tv. as for drug use, 6.3% reported being current tobacco smokers, 27% drank alcoholic beverages regularly and 8.7% had used illicit drugs at least once. these results should guide stakeholders and policy makers in the development and implementation of programs and recommendations aimed at curtailing unhealthy exposures of adolescents in brazil.

Abstract: objective: to describe the prevalence of alcohol and other drugs consumption, among adolescent students. methods: a cross-sectional study with conglomerate samples of 60,973 students at freshman year high school in public and private schools in capitals and the federal district in brazil, in 2009. the 95% confidence interval and the prevalence of alcohol and drug consumption were analyzed. results: for the set of surveyed students, the following were identified: experimenting alcoholic beverages (71.4%; 95%ci 70.8-72.0); regular alcoholic beverage consumption (27.3%; 95%ci 26.7-28.0); drunkenness in lifetime (22.1%; 95%ci 21.6-22.7); family is worried when the student gets home drunk (93.8%; 95%ci 93.3-94.2); problems with alcohol use (9.0%; 95%ci 8.6-9.4); consumption of other drugs (8.7%; 95%ci 8.3-9.1). conclusion: this study shows the extension of the alcohol and drugs problem among brazilian adolescents, with special emphasis on the easy access of students to alcoholic beverages at parties, bars, stores, and at home.
James Steuart: as quest?es heterodoxas de um economista político conservador
Malta, Maria Mello de;
Nova Economia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512009000300005
Abstract: this work intends to present the main heterodox questions brought up by james steuart′s thought. steuart′s works on political economy have the sign of duality. this sign condemned this work to ostracism during this life time and labeled him as mercanlist in the history of economic thought. this article uses the duality in his work to connect it with the recent research recovering his initial ideas. this study is a part of a movement that seeks to spread the knowledge of steuart′s visions about the economic process and political economy as a science to put forward the interpretation that political economy in its origin is submerged in important divergences about scientific perspectives.

Abstract: infant deaths were classified as avoidable, non-avoidable, and resulting from ill-defined conditions, from 1997 to 2006, using the brazilian list of avoidable causes of mortality. non-linear regression was used to calculate trends in cause-specific infant mortality rates. there was a significant decline in both avoidable deaths and deaths from ill-defined causes (p < 0.001). avoidable deaths decreased by 37% overall. mortality avoidable through adequate intrapartum care and adequate neonatal care decreased by 27.7% and 42.5%, respectively, while mortality avoidable through adequate prenatal care increased by 28.3%. in conclusion, health services contributed to the reduction in infant mortality. the decrease in ill-defined causes of death indicates expanded access to health services. the increase in access to intrapartum and neonatal care contributed to the reduction in infant deaths. the increase in mortality avoidable through adequate prenatal care indicates the need for improvement in prenatal care.
Convergence Criterium of Numerical Chaotic Solutions Based on Statistical Measures  [PDF]

Abstract: Solutions of most nonlinear differential equations have to be obtained numerically. The time series obtained by numerical integration will be a solution of the differential equation only if it is independent of the integration step h. A numerical solution is considered to have converged, when the difference between the time series for steps h and h/2 becomes smaller as h decreases. Unfortunately, this convergence criterium is unsuitable in the case of a chaotic solution, due to the extreme sensitivity to initial conditions that is characteristic of this kind of solution. We present here a criterium of convergence that involves the comparison of the attractors associated to the time series for integration time steps h and h/2. We show that the probability that the chaotic attractors associated to these time series are the same increases monotonically as the integration step h is decreased. The comparison of attractors is made using 1) the method of correlation integral, and 2) the method of statistical distance of probability distributions.
