Tityus stigmurus (Thorell, 1876) (Scorpiones; Buthidae): response to chemical control and understanding of scorpionism among the population
Albuquerque, Cleide Maria Ribeiro de;Barbosa, Marcilania Oliveira;Iannuzzi, Luciana;
Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0037-86822009000300004
Abstract: in this study, the events following application of the insecticidedemand 2.5 concentrated solution (cs) in the field, to control tityus stigmurus, were investigated. data on attitudes and practices relating to scorpionism were collected using a questionnaire. during the months of may to july 2005, 69 premises were monitored on different days following insecticide treatment, focusing on scorpion frequency and mortality. according to the results, 42% of the premises showed scorpion incidence, with an average of three specimens per house. the highest incidence was recorded during the first week following the treatment. only 7% of the specimens were found dead. most (72%) of the population showed knowledge about prevention and control measures. despite this, 100% of the premises presented breeding sites, mainly in debris (79.7%). these results indicate that the scorpion control method used by health agents during this investigation was not efficient, and the results suggest that the method may have had a dispersive effect on these animals.

Revista de Enfermagem UFPE On Line , 2010,
Abstract: Objective: to describe the growth according to the nutritional state from the suklings assisted from a child care’s clinic, using the curves weight versus age proposed by WHO and NCHS. Methods: this is about a descriptive study, from quantitative approach, using the database from 66 infants’ handbooks. Data were analyzed in the software EPI-INFO 6.04d, SPSS 13.0 and Excel program 2003. The study has been approved by the Committee of Ethics in Research from IMIP (protocol number 1066/2007). Results: in the 1st month, the curve of WHO identified 4 (6,1%) low weight’s cases , the one from NCHS, only 1 (1,5%). Concerning to the birth’s weight, among those that were born low weight, 57,1% (4) presented low weight in the first month of life, when appraised for the curve of WHO. Whereas, the appraised infants for the curve of NCHS, 42,9% (3) had already "recovered" the weight until this age. About the feeding type, all the children that were in breastfeeding in this period, were considered with appropriate weight in both curves. Conclusion: The standard curve W x A of WHO was shown more sensitive for identification from weight’s deficits in the first months of life, in relation to NCHS.

Jogos. Conceitos Matemáticos.

Revista Brasileira de Saúde Materno Infantil , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-38292005000500006
Abstract: abstract objectives: to evaluate epidemiological surveil-lance (es) and its specifics management at municipal level. methods: eleven municipalities were selected in the state of pernambuco, brazil, based on the geographical, demographic and management criteria. the level of implementation was estimated by way of interviews with key-players at three levels of es: the headquarters, family health units (fhus) and traditional health units (thus), laying emphasis on features relating to infrastructure and the work process. points were assigned for the selected variables, which, taken as a whole, allowed for classification of es as: fully introduced, partially introduced, or not introduced. in order to evaluate management, the eleven municipal health secretaries were interviewed. results: es was found to have been fully introduced in only 27% of municipalities and partially introduced in 45%, having a better structure in larger-scale municipalities where there is full management of the municipal system. in these, of the three levels studied, it was found that the central level showed the greatest weaknesses, and that the fhus performed better than the thus. so far as management is concerned, although all the municipalities were certified to carry out es activities, it was found that there are significant obstacles to its effective introduction. conclusions: es still has shortcomings that hamper its full introduction at municipal level.

Case Reports in Medicine , 2012, DOI: 10.1155/2012/651472
Abstract: Abdominal hernias are very frequent in cirrhotic patients with ascites. The hernias usually present as umbilical, inguinal, incisional, or femoral. However, these patients can also develop uncommon hernias such as pelvic hernias because of pelvic floor weakness and high abdominal pressure due to ascites. We present the first case of a cirrhotic patient with ascites that developed a giant sciatic hernia mimicking a perianal abscess.
Oviposition activity of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in responseto different organic infusions
Santos, Eloína;Correia, Juliana;Muniz, Luciana;Meiado, Marcos;Albuquerque, Cleide;
Neotropical Entomology , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-566X2010000200023
Abstract: the present study investigates new sources of infusion as an oviposition attractant for aedes aegypti l. infusions with fetid and non-fetid odors were compared as an oviposition stimulant. traps baited with infusions of dehydrated cashew leaves (anacardium occidentale), potato peels (solanum tuberosum) and graminea (panicum maximum) were compared as attractants, and the effect of odor (fetid and unfetid) on attractiveness was tested. oviposition activity changed significantly according to the concentration and type of infusion (f = 4.1279; gl = 2; p = 0.0231). a larger number of eggs were observed in cups containing 50% a. occidentale (non-fetid odor) and 30% p. maximum (fetid odor). when compared in the same cage, comparable oviposition was found between a. occidentale and p. maximum. moreover, approximately 20% more eggs were recorded in the infusion without odor when compared to the grass infusion and water. these findings suggest a. occidentale as a new stimulant for use in ovitraps for aedes surveillance and control, with the benefit of having an agreeable odor.

Albuquerque, Diana Santana de;Gominho, Luciana Ferraz;Santos, Roberto Alves dos;
Brazilian Oral Research , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1806-83242006000300008
Abstract: the aim of this study was to evaluate histological aspects of the pulp-dentin complex of dogs submitted to pulpotomy and capped with ethyl-cyanoacrylate and calcium hydroxide. thirty dog teeth were divided into 2 groups of 15 as follows: group 1 - ethyl-cyanoacrylate; group 2 - calcium hydroxide. the pulpotomies were carried out following all of the treatment precautions recommended for dogs. after 30 days the specimens were submitted to histological preparation and were then blindly evaluated by a histologist. data were analyzed statistically by the fisher exact test, comparing the two groups. after 30 days, the presence of a hard tissue barrier was observed in 83.3% of group 1, and in 100% of group 2 (p = 0.478). a continuous hard tissue barrier was observed in 50% of the ethyl-cyanoacrylate group and 75% of the calcium hydroxide group (p = 0.652). it can be concluded that both materials induced hard tissue barrier formation, but group 2 had a higher percentage than group 1, with no significant statistical differences; the differences observed between the different barriers (continuous/non-continuous) were not significant between groups and there was no pulpal necrosis in either group.
