Journal of Behavioral and Brain Science (JBBS) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/jbbs.2018.87026
Abstract: We present the novel use of a neuroimaging technique, magnetoenceph-alography (MEG), for examining therapy-related changes in neural activity during a speech and a non-speech motor task in children with speech sound disorders (SSD). Nine children (mean age = 4.2 years) with SSD were scanned in the MEG before and after an eight-week course of intensive motor speech therapy. MEG tasks involved an oromotor and a syllable production task. MEG analyses identified significant post-therapy changes in brain regions related to oromotor control and speech production. Behavioral assessments showed significant improvements on measures of motor speech skills and articulation following intervention. This is the first demonstration of the ability of MEG to: 1) capture brain activations resulting from oromotor movements and simple syllable production in young children, and 2) capture brain changes related to speech therapy. As the findings from this study are promising, we discuss directions for the design of future studies to further examine specific neural dysfunctions in speech sound disorders.
On the Complex Symmetry of the Poincar'E-Steklov Operator

PIER B , 2008, DOI: 10.2528/PIERB08022102
Abstract: Employing Lorentz reciprocity and the Stratton-Chu formalism it is shown that the Poincare-Steklov or admittance operator can be interpreted as a complex symmetric operator mapping the tangential electric field (instead of the equivalent magnetic current) onto the equivalent electric current. We show that the pertinent block Calder′on projectors can be reformulated as operators with a block Hamiltonian structure. This leads to an explicitly complex symmetric Schur complement expression for both the interior and exterior admittance operators.

This article presents some of the results of a study carried out in the indigenous Tikuna community of Umaria u (Brazil). This research sought to describe the mathematical notions perceivable in Tikuna weaving, specifically in the baskets and mats woven by women, and to show that methodological strategies for the teaching of mathematics in indigenous-community schools could be derived from everyday objects present in the indigenous culture. To attain this objective it was not enough to know mathematics; it was necessary to see in the forms of the fabric and in its process of creation the mathematical notions and ideas related to the contents taught in indigenous schools. It was also necessary to live with the women, get to know their wishes, walk with them to their agroforestry plots, learn to knit, and gain their trust, so as to discern the meanings of this work and its products for the women of the community.

Abstract: In this study twelve general practitioner practices were randomly allocated to the intervention group (6 practices) or to the control group (6 practices). Three thousand four hundred ninety-eight screening questionnaires including the Groningen Frailty Indicator (GFI) were sent out to identify frail older people. Based on their GFI score (≥5), 360 participants will be included in the study. The intervention will receive an interdisciplinary primary care intervention. After a comprehensive assessment by a practice nurse and additional assessments by other professionals, if needed, an individual action plan will be defined. The action plan is related to a flexible toolbox of interventions, which will be conducted by an interdisciplinary team. Effects of the intervention, both for the frail older people and their informal caregivers, will be measured after 6, 12 and 24 months using postal questionnaires and telephone interviews. Data for the process evaluation and economic evaluation will be gathered continuously over a 24-month period. The proposed study will provide information about the usefulness of an interdisciplinary primary care intervention. The postal screening procedure was conducted in two cycles between December 2009 and April 2010 and turned out to be a feasible method. The response rate was 79.7%. According to GFI scores 29.3% of the respondents can be considered as frail (GFI ≥ 5). Nearly half of them (48.1%) were willing to participate. The baseline measurements started in January 2010. In February 2010 the first older people were approached by the practice nurse for a comprehensive assessment. Data on the effect, process, and economic evaluation will be available in 2012.ISRCTN31954692Frailty is highly prevalent in older people; up to 40% of this population is estimated to be frail and an increasing trend is expected [1]. Frailty is related to an increased risk of adverse health outcomes such as acute and chronic diseases, disability and mortality [2-4

Abstract: Nucleic acids-based therapies have recently developed as next-generation agents for treating and preventing viral infection, cancer, and genetic disorders, but their use is still limited due to its relatively poor delivery into targeted cells. We designed and synthesized new amphiphilic amino acid derivatives (cysteine-based) of low molecular weight, formed by the same pentapeptide (AG2: WWCOO) N-acylated, with different hydrophobic chains containing from 12 to 18 carbons, named AG2-Cn (N), which dimerize by oxidation in the presence of pLenti-CMV-GFP Puro plasmid (P) in the respective gemini. We determined transfection efficiency, critical micelle concentration, particle size, ζ-potential and cytotoxicity for the derivatives obtained. We found that all the synthesized compounds were active for DNA delivery and had greater ability to transfect CHO-K1 cells. In particular, AG2-C18 is a promising carrier for gene delivery because it showed no cytotoxicity and its activity was greater than or equal to the commercial actives currently used.

Abstract: A questionnaire was sent to 687 community-dwelling older people (≥ 70 years). Agreement between instruments, internal consistency, and construct validity of instruments were evaluated and compared. The response rate was 77%. Prevalence estimates of frailty ranged from 40% to 59%. The highest agreement was found between the GFI and the TFI (Cohen's kappa = 0.74). Cronbach's alpha for the GFI, the TFI and the SPQ was 0.73, 0.79 and 0.26, respectively. Scores on the three instruments correlated significantly with each other (GFI - TFI, r = 0.87; GFI - SPQ, r = 0.47; TFI - SPQ, r = 0.42) and with the GARS (GFI - GARS, r = 0.57; TFI - GARS, r = 0.61; SPQ - GARS, r = 0.46). The GFI and the TFI scores were, as expected, significantly related to age, sex, education and income. The GFI and the TFI showed high internal consistency and construct validity in contrast to the SPQ. Based on these findings it is not yet possible to conclude whether the GFI or the TFI should be preferred; data on the predictive values of both instruments are needed. The SPQ seems less appropriate for postal screening of frailty among community-dwelling older people.Frailty is highly prevalent in older people. Up to 40% of older people can be considered as frail and an increasing trend can be expected [1]. Next to its high prevalence, frailty is characterized by its seriousness as it is related to an increased risk of adverse health outcomes such as disability [2-4]. Disability is defined as difficulty or dependency in the execution of activities of daily living and it is associated with increased health service utilization and related costs. Frailty and disability are separate but overlapping concepts. On the one hand, frailty predicts disability. On the other hand, disability may well exacerbate frailty [5]. With regard to a growing frail population and limited health care expenditures, disability in community-dwelling frail older people is suggested to be a public health problem [3]. Therefore disab
