Abstract: the objective of this trial was to evaluate production of nursing ewes and yearling female lambs grazing annual ryegrass pasture (lolium multiflorum lam) supplemented or not with corn grain or soybean meal. supplements were fed to animals in a quantity equivalent to 1% of sheep unit (ewe + lamb) body weight. the following variables were investigated: average daily gain, body weight gain per hectare, and stocking rate while for ryegrass pasture the following measurements were taken: forage mass, losses, and allowance, pasture height, green leaf allowance, forage mass accumulation rate, total forage production, crude protein content, and in vitro digestibility of hand plucking material. supplementation did not significantly affect the stocking rate in this trial. female lambs supplemented with soybean meal had higher average daily gain than those not supplemented that lost 3.4 g daily on pasture only. body weight gain per hectare was highest by feeding soybean meal to sheep. the sward structure changed during pasture cycle independently of treatment effects.

Abstract: this experiment was developed at the animal science department, at federal university of santa maria, brazil with the aim of determining the growth of the organs and other body constituents of lambs, and their proportion in the live weight (lw) and empty body weight (ebw). twenty-two intact male lambs, from crossbreed texel x ideal dams sired by texel males were used. four lambs were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment (24 hours after birth) and groups of six lambs were slaughtered at weaning and when reaching 28 or 33kg of body weight. to study the relative growth of the different body constituents, the halometric equations between the log of the weight of each component, and of the log of the ebw were fitted. the proportions of alimentary tract (at), other internal organs (goi), internal fat (if) and carcass increased with increasing lw and ebw (p<0.05), whereas heart, liver, spleen, kidney, lung with trachea, blood, feet and head decreased (p<0.05). one group of constituents was early maturity (heart, kidney, lung with trachea, feet, blood and head), and another was of late maturity (rumen- reticulum- omasum and abomasum ), at and if). the remaining ones (liver, spleen, intestine, skin and carcass) had the same growth rate as ebw.
Relationship between temperament with performance and meat quality of feedlot steers with predominantly Charolais or Nellore breed
Silveira, Isabella Dias Barbosa;Fischer, Vivian;Farinatti, Luis Henrique Ebling;Restle, Jo?o;Alves Filho, Dari Celestino;Menezes, Luís Fernando Glasenapp de;
Revista Brasileira de Zootecnia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-35982012000600022
Abstract: the relation between temperament with performance and meat quality was determined in 79 charolais × nellore steers kept in feedlot. temperament was evaluated according to exit velocity, scale composite score and flight distance four times in the finishing phase, along with body weight, intake and feed conversion measures. cattle were classified as calm, intermediate and excited according to exit velocity measures at the beginning of the trial. excited cattle presented larger values for composite score and flight distance. irrespective of genotype, excited cattle presented lower average daily gain, dry matter intake and worse feed conversion. temperament categories did not affect most of beef quality traits, except for calm bos indicus steers, which presented greater ph measured 1 hour post mortem compared with more reactive steers. however, moderate but negative correlations were detected between exit velocity, flight distance and composite score and beef quality as well as warner-bratzler shear value, luminosity, ph measured 24 hours post mortem, although they were not consistent between genotypes raised under the same conditions.

Acta Amazonica , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0044-59672006000300015
Abstract: the use of different photoperiods (light) were investigated during tambaqui (colossoma macropomum) juvenile growth under captivity. light intensity tested was: continuous dark (24hrs without light), natural photoperiod simulation (10hrs of light and 14hrs without light) and continuous light (24 with light). no mortality was recorded among treatments. significant differences was observed after 50 days of experiment among mean fish weight, fish kept under a continuous darkness showed a better specific growth rate (6.02%) when compared to control fish (natural photo period, 3.67%). fish exposed to continuous light presented the lowest mean specific growth rate (2.04%). it is possible to improve tambaqui juvenile weight gain performance when kept under continuous darkness.
Curandeirismo no século XIX: as escolas do povo

Abstract: Objectives Bilirubin has potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The UGT1A1*28 polymorphism (TA repeats in the promoter region) is a major determinant of bilirubin levels and recent evidence suggests that raised adiposity may also be a contributing factor. We aimed to study the interaction between UGT1A1 polymorphism, hematological and anthropometric variables with total bilirubin levels in young individuals. Methods 350 obese (mean age of 11.6 years; 52% females) and 79 controls (mean age of 10.5 years; 59% females) were included. Total bilirubin and C-reactive protein (CRP) plasma levels, hemogram, anthropometric data and UGT1A1 polymorphism were determined. In a subgroup of 74 obese and 40 controls body composition was analyzed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Results The UGT1A1 genotype frequencies were 49.9%, 42.7% and 7.5% for 6/6, 6/7 and 7/7 genotypes, respectively. Patients with 7/7 genotype presented the highest total bilirubin levels, followed by 6/7 and 6/6 genotypes. Compared to controls, obese patients presented higher erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin and CRP levels, but no differences in bilirubin or in UGT1A1 genotype distribution. Body fat percentage was inversely correlated with bilirubin in obese patients but not in controls. This inverse association was observed either in 6/7 or 6/6 genotype obese patients. UGT1A1 polymorphism and body fat percentage were the main factors affecting bilirubin levels within obese patients (linear regression analysis). Conclusion In obese children and adolescents, body fat composition and UGT1A1 polymorphism are independent determinants of total bilirubin levels. Obese individuals with 6/6 UGT1A1 genotype and higher body fat mass may benefit from a closer clinical follow-up.

Revista Brasileira de Educa??o , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-24782007000100005
Abstract: this article takes elements of a foucaultian analysis of discourse and examines discursive practices which circulate in elementary schools. its purpose is to problematise certain concepts and certain enunciatory regularities and to demonstrate their implication for ordering our classrooms and for regulating teachers' practices. this work is based on the hypothesis that there is a kind of ordering in school discourse. that is, that there are certain rules that sanction and/or interdict the production and circulation of school discursive practices. at the same time, the circulation, the dissemination, the sharing of certain enunciations that make up these discursive practices have effects on the production of teachers' identities, on their ways of looking at the classroom, the students, education, in short, on the very materialisation of school education. the data analysed in this article was obtained through interviews, carried out with teachers at public elementary schools in two cities in the state of rio grande do sul. when analysing the order of school discourse, i point to the existing harmony between what is said and done in public elementary school education.
