Abstract: in vitro protein digestibility of protein sources has been correlated with in vivo digestibility values. however, factors like protein origin, enzyme used and its concentration, ph and processing have been related with the significance of the correlation between the estimates. to address only the enzyme concentration factor, this paper had the objective of testing pepsin at 0.2, 0.02, 0.002 and 0.0002% using the standard aoac (1995) procedure. two meat and bone meals (mbm) with low and high crude protein (cp) content were used to determine the coefficient of solubility of cp in pepsin and hcl (cscppeph). centrifugation was used to establish the nitrogen (n) in the soluble phase, instead of filtration and analysis of n in the residue. the variance analysis and a non-linear asymptotic model were adjusted. the cscppeph under different pepsin concentrations for the two mbm showed higher solubility discrimination with low pepsin concentration. the level of 0.0002% pepsin is better to predict the cp soluble in mbm. this finding implies the assumption that 0.2% pepsin found in the aoac is not correct for the purpose of determining the range of solubility in high and low cp content in mbm.

Abstract: The reaction between hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene and isophorone diisocyanate constitutes the base of the curing process of the most composite solid propellant used in the propulsion of solid rocket propellant. In this work, differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity measurements were used to evaluate the effect of the ferric acetylacetonate catalyst concentration on the reaction between HTBR and IPDI. These analyses show one exotherm, which shifts to lower temperatures as the catalyst concentration increases. The viscosity analyses show that the increase of temperature causes, at first, a reduction in the mixture viscosity, reaching a minimum range called gelification region (increasing the crosslinking density).

Abstract: air movement has been shown to influence performance of confined swine, and that appropriate air flow is fundamental to better animal comfort, and to minimize sanitary problems. the effect of window with and without aeolic exhaustion and mechanical ventilation designed only for hot season was evaluated at concordia, sc, brazil, during 1991/92. although effect of season (p<0.05) had been observed on environment that was not the case on animal performance (p>0.05). the hot season environment was stressing for animals, due to higher environment temperature (ti) (>22.0°c), low air velocity (vi) (<0.2 m/s), reduced feed intake (cr) (<4.3 kg/day), as well as increased weaning estrus interval (idc) (>13 days) during the hot season as compared to cold season: ti (<19.0°c), vi (<0.1 m/s), cr (<4.57 kg/day) and idc (<7 days), respectively. in conclusion, ventilation systems based only on natural openings are sufficient for cold season, but are not for hot season due to increase in the ventilation needs.

Parasites & Vectors , 2012, DOI: 10.1186/1756-3305-5-62
Abstract: Based on 120 veterinary medical centres from all the regions of mainland and insular Portugal, 557 apparently healthy and 628 CVBD-suspect dogs were sampled. Serum, plasma or whole blood was tested for qualitative detection of D. immitis antigen and antibodies to E. canis, B. burgdorferi s. l., Anaplasma spp. and L. infantum with two commercial in-clinic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Odds ratios (OR) were calculated by logistic regression analysis to identify independent risk factors of exposure to the vector-borne agents.Total positivity levels to D. immitis, E. canis, B. burgdorferi, Anaplasma spp., L. infantum, one or more agents and mixed agents were 3.6%, 4.1%, 0.2%, 4.5%, 4.3%, 14.0% and 2.0% in the healthy group, and 8.9%, 16.4%, 0.5%, 9.2%, 25.2%, 46.3% and 11.6% in the clinically suspect group, respectively. Non-use of ectoparasiticides was a risk factor for positivity to one or more agents both in the apparently healthy (OR = 2.1) and CVBD-suspect (OR = 1.5) dogs. Seropositivity to L. infantum (OR = 7.6), E. canis (OR = 4.1) and D. immitis (OR = 2.4) were identified as risk factors for the presence of clinical signs compatible with CVBDs. Positivity to mixed agents was not found to be a risk factor for disease.Dogs in Portugal are at risk of becoming infected with vector-borne pathogens, some of which are of zoonotic concern. CVBDs should be considered by practitioners and prophylactic measures must be put in place to protect dogs and limit the risk of transmission of vector-borne agents to humans. This study is expected to give veterinary and public health authorities an increased awareness about CVBDs in Portugal and to serve as a reference for future investigations and control actions.Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are an emerging problem worldwide due to their frequency and morbidity and, in most cases, also to their zoonotic relevance, with dogs potentially serving as sentinels for human infection [1]. CVBDs are caused by a diverse ran

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 1992, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46651992000300007
Abstract: gravity sedimentation parasitological examinations were performed in stool samples from 111 karitiana indians from rond?nia state, brazilian amazon basin. intestinal parasites were found in 43 samples (38.7%). ascaris lumbricoides was the most prevalent helminth species (18.9%). egg counts in samples positive for ascaris suggested an overdispersed distribution of worm burdens in the host population. age-distribution pattern of intestinal parasites among karitiana indians was found to be rather unusual: the highest prevalence (60.0%) was detected in the 12-to 16-year-old age group

Abstract: The legal reserve (RL) is by the Brazilian Forest Code a portion of the total area of a farm where the use of the natural resources is to be done on a sustainable basis aiming the ecological processes, and biodiversity conservation and the shelter and protection of native fauna and flora. The existence of RL has been criticized since its creation, specially by the allegation that it interferes on productive processes and for regarding the difficulties of its implantation. The multistrata agroforestry systems (AFS) are widely accepted as a conservative management practice, even in Brazilian legislation, and it is an alternative technique for the implantation of the RL. This work, carried altogether in small farms containing multistrata AFS and natural forests regeneration tracts (some of them already registered as RL) showed that this AFS, although productive systems, hold similar number and diversity of species to the renenerating forest , satisfying the legal minimum requisites expected in RL and thus suitable to be used as a technology for recovering and managing the RL. Moreover, as its management is agroecological, it was observed the recolonization of several native species, corroborating the potential use of these AFS in ecological restiration processes.

Abstract: Carbon storage of agroforestry systems, regenerated areas, conventional agriculture and pasture was evaluated at Alto Ribeira Valley region, S o Paulo State, Brazil, in different compartments of Land-use systems (LUS). In soil, classified as Entisols and Inceptisols, we found similarities among all LUS, dued to their low contents of organic carbon, and similar values of bulk density. The total carbon stocked on land-use systems, greater amounts were determined on regenerated areas (115.78 Mg ha-1), followed by agroforestry systems (75.38 Mg ha-1), agriculture (47.07 Mg ha-1), and pasture (36.01 Mg ha-1). Despite their conservative characteristic, the silvicultural practices of multistrata agroforestry systems have to be improved for forest production and carbon sequestration.doi: 10.4336/2011.pfb.31.66.143 Foi avaliado o estoque de carbono no solo, serapilheira, biomassa arbórea e biomassa herbácea de SAFs multiestratos, em compara o a capoeiras em diferentes estágios de regenera o, sistemas agrícolas convencionais e pastagem, todos na regi o do Alto Vale do Ribeira, SP.
