Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the genetic parameters estimated in intra and interespecific hybrid families of elephant grass under two evaluation strategies: per se and genetically stratified mass selection. ten families of intraespecifc hybrids and ten families of interespecific hybrids were used. the characteristics evaluated were the following: plant height, plant agronomic score, dry matter content and dry matter production. it was estimated, for genetic parameters, heritability in the wide sense, variance, genetic and experimental variation coefficient and genetic, phenotypic and environmental correlation. the experiment was evaluated in a random block design with three repetitions. greater genetic variability for the studied characteristics were observed among the interespecific hybrids of elephant grass and pearl millet in comparison to the intraespecifc hybrids of elephant grass. heritability showed higher percentages for per se strategy among the studied hybrids. genetically stratified mass selection is less effective in removing the environmental effects aiming at improving experimental precision.

Abstract: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as características do pasto e da extrusa de novilhas Girolanda, submetidas a três taxas de lota o, em pastagem de capim Brachiaria decumbens Stapf., em diferentes períodos de avalia o. Foram utilizadas seis novilhas da ra a Girolanda e os tratamentos foram constituídos por diferentes taxas de lota o (2, 4 e 6 UA); cada bloco foi formado por três piquetes. O delineamento foi de blocos ao acaso em parcelas subdivididas com medidas repetidas no tempo. A taxa de bocados dos animais variou com operíodo de avalia o, com valores de 41 bocados min.-1 (Período 1) e 33 bocados min.-1 (Período 3). A taxa de bocados reduziu ao longo dos períodos de pastejo com valores de 41 a 33 bocados min.-1 Já o tamanho do bocado apresentou valores maiores nos períodos de avalia o 2 e 3, na taxa de lota o 2 UA (0,40 e 0,43 g MS bocado-1). A matéria seca da extrusa apresentou valores maiores no 3° (15,0% de MS) e 2° (17,4% de MS) dia de pastejo. O aumento no teor de proteína bruta da extrusa ocorreu no terceiro período de pastejo (14,4%) e no teor de fibra em detergente neutro (75,3%). The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the grass and extrusa from Girolanda heifers, under three stocking rates on grass pasture of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf., at different evaluation periods. Six Girolanda heifers were used, and treatmentsconsisted of different stocking rates (2, 4 and 6 UA). Each block was formed by three paddocks. The design was a randomized blocks design in split-plot with repeated measures over time. The bite rate of the animals varied according to assessment period, with values of 41 bites min.-1 (Period 1) and 33 bites min.-1 (Period 3). Bite rate decreased over the grazing period, with values from 41 to 33 bit min-1. Bite size was larger in grazing periods 2 and 3, at the stocking rate of 2 UA (0.40 and 0.43 g DM bite-1). Extrusa dry matter was higher in the third (15.0% DM) and second (17.4% DM) days of grazing. An increase in crude protein content of extusa occurred in the third grazing period (14.4%) and for total neutral detergent fiber (75.3%).

Abstract: In this work, we investigated the spasmolytic effect of caulerpine, a bisindole alkaloid isolated from marine algae of the Caulerpa genus, on guinea pig ileum. Our findings indicated that caulerpine inhibited phasic contractions induced by carbachol (IC 50 = 7.0 ± 1.9 × 10 ?5 M), histamine (IC 50 = 1.3 ± 0.3 × 10 ?4 M) and serotonin (IC 50 = 8.0 ± 1.4 × 10 ?5 M) in a non-selective manner. Furthermore, caulerpine concentration-dependently inhibited serotonin-induced cumulative contractions (pD′ 2 = 4.48 ± 0.08), shifting the curves to the right with E max reduction and slope of 2.44 ± 0.21, suggesting a noncompetitive antagonism pseudo-irreversible. The alkaloid also relaxed the ileum pre-contracted by KCl (EC 50 = 9.0 ± 0.9 × 10 ?5 M) and carbachol (EC 50 = 4.6 ± 0.7 × 10 ?5 M) in a concentration-dependent manner. This effect was probably due to inhibition of Ca 2+ influx through voltage-gated calcium channels (Ca V), since caulerpine slightly inhibited the CaCl 2-induced contractions in depolarizing medium without Ca 2+, shifting the curves to the right and with E max reduction. According to these results, the spasmolytic effect of caulerpine on guinea pig ileum seems to involve inhibition of Ca 2+ influx through Ca V. However, other mechanisms are not discarded.

O segmento juvenil foi o mais afetado pelo desemprego, devido ao acirramento da concorrência no mercado de trabalho pelas vagas existentes dada a dificuldade para a cria o de novos postos de trabalho na economia.

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the contributions of Popular Education in Health for the elderly empowerment in the community context. It is characterized as a qualitative research, type action research, which were studied issues related to prevention and promotion of health of the elderly in the community setting, through the Popular Education in Health, among the Project activities extension “Popular Education and Health Care for the Family (PEPASF)”, the Federal University of Paraíba, in Jo?o Pessoa, PB, Brazil. The participants were 40 elderly (but here we used the answers of three of them), 90 students (but here we used the answers of three of them) of design and 3 professionals (here we used the answers of one physician and two community health workers), from local health services. The analysis showed the implication of experienced by the People’s Education care so to promote the health of the elderly in the empowerment perspective, promoting new attitudes in the face of situations of life. It was noticed that care so developed by PEPASF contributed to the promotion of the health of the elderly followed, encompassing the dimensions, social, physical and subjective, inherent in the human being. By valuing aspects of the subjectivity of the elderly, the project has expanded the prospects for comprehensive health promotion, demonstrating significant benefits to improve the quality of life of these people, opening new horizons for the search for autonomy and empowerment, as well as the transformation unjust and exclusionary social realities.
High-throughput nanoparticle analysis in a FEG-SEM using an inexpensive multi-sample STEM-ADF system

Abstract: Nanotechnology research requires the routine use of characterization methods with high spatial resolution. These experiments are rather costly, not only from the point of view of the expensive microscopes, but also considering the need of a rather specialized equipment operator. Here, we describe the construction of an inexpensive and simple device that allows the analysis of nanoparticle in a FEG-SEM; images can be generated at high magnifications (ex. x500.000) and with nanometric resolution. It is based on the acquisition of transmitted electrons annular dark field (TE-ADF) signal; the systems can carry up to 16 TEM samples and, it is compatible with SEM sample exchange air-lock. Performance test have shown the measured ADF signal showed the atomic number and thickness dependence for transition metal nanoparticle about 10 nm in diameter. Also, the signal quality is high enough that the determination of the histogram of size distribution can be performed using a conventional image processing software, for gold particles in the range of 2-10 nm in diameter. The developed ADF device allows a much faster and cheaper high spatial resolution imaging of nanoparticle samples for routine morphological characterization and, provides an invaluable high throughput tool for an efficient sample screening.
Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Crude Methanolic Extract of Red Alga Bryothamnion triquetrum

Abstract: The marine environment is an extraordinary reservoir of bioactive natural products, many of which exhibit chemical and structural features not found in terrestrial natural products. In this regard, the aim of this study was to investigate the possible antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of a crude methanolic extract of the red alga Bryothamnion triquetrum (BT-MeOH) in murine models. Groups of Swiss mice of both sexes (25–30 g) were used throughout the experiments. The potential antinociceptive of BT-MeOH was evaluated by means of the following tests: acetic acid-induced writhing, hot-plate test and glutamate- and formalin-induced nociception. The anti-inflammatory activity of BT-MeOH was investigated using the zymosan A-induced peritonitis test. The tests were conducted using 100 mg/kg (p.o.) BT-MeOH, 33.3 mg/kg (p.o.) dipyrone, 35.7?mg/kg (p.o.) indomethacin and 5.7 mg/kg (s.c.) morphine. The extract and all standard drugs were administered 40 min before the nociceptive/inflammatory stimulus. In the acetic acid-induced writhing test, BT-MeOH and dipyrone inhibited the nociceptive response by 55.9% (22.2 ± 2.0 writhings; p < 0.01) and 80.9% (9.6 ± 2.1 writhings; p < 0.01). In the hot-plate test, BT-MeOH did not increase the latency time of the animals in the time evaluated. In addition, BT-MeOH inhibited glutamate-induced nociception by 50.1%. While BT-MeOH did not inhibit the neurogenic phase in formalin-induced nociception, the inflammatory phase was inhibited by 53.1% (66.8 ± 14.2 s; p < 0.01). Indomethacin inhibited the inflammatory phase by 60.2% (56.8 ± 8.7 s; p < 0.01). In the zymosan-induced peritonitis test, BT-MeOH inhibited 55.6% (6.6 ± 0.2 × 10 6 leukocytes/mL; p < 0.01) of leukocyte migration, while indomethacin inhibited 78.1% (3.2 ± 0.1 × 10 6 leukocytes/mL; p < 0.01). Based on the results obtained in this study, we conclude that BT-MeOH has peripheral antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. However, more studies need to be conducted to confirm these properties.
