FDI and Employment by Industry: A Co-Integration Study  [PDF]

Abstract: The relationship between high levels of FDI and of employment has been of enduring interest in the development literature, particularly in the context of economy as China which has enjoyed exceptional inflows of foreign capital as well as huge amount of working population. Aiming at exploring the specific relations between FDI and employment of three strata industries in china, EG cointegration method and Granger causality test is applied to identify the long-run relations and short-run linkages between FDI and employment in each of the industry via distributed lag model; moreover, first-order and second-order ECMs are created to assess the short-term deviation. Findings indicate that, in secondary and tertiary industry, growth of FDI in the long run would promote employment, and it is especially true for tertiary industry, where bidirectional linkage between FDI and employment exists; in the short term FDI has limited and even negative impetus on employment, with the latter indirectly increasing the former.

Abstract: Endeavors have been made in this paper to discern the long-run relations between FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) and economic development in China in the comprehensive framework, which incorporates determinants as output, FDI, capital formation, employment, human capital and international openness. VAR (vector autoregressive models)Impulse Response, Variance Decomposition, Johansen Co-integration and VECM (vector error correction) have been estimated, focusing on the long-run structural relations; findings indicate that in the long run, FDI tends to decrease economic growth; economic development in China seems to be fueled by domestic capital accumulation and employment growth; FDI inflows do crowd out domestic capitals, and reduce employment growth.
Intravascular large B-cell lymphoma of the kidney: A case report

Abstract: She had renal dysfunction with a total urinary protein of 5.61 g/dL (56.1 g/L), serum albumin of 2.89 g/dL (28.9 g/L), urea nitrogen of 2.24 mg/dL (1.6 mmol/L), and serum creatinine of 0.54 mg/dL (48 μmol/L). Bone marrow biopsy revealed myeloproliferative disorder without abnormal myeloid or lymphocytic proliferation. Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) showed marked bilateral swelling and enlargement of the renal parenchyma with splenic enlargement and involvement of multiple vertebrae. Percutaneous renal biopsy showed island-like accumulations of medium to large lymphoid cells in many areas of the interstitium, with round vesicular nuclei containing distinct basophilic nucleoli. Immunohistochemical analysis together with other supportive investigation confirmed the diagnosis of intravascular large B-cell lymphoma. Ten days later, she was started on chemotherapy with CHOP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, leurocristime and prednisone) for a week. Palliative radiotherapy DT 40Gy/20F with other supportive treatment was provided for metastatic foci in the medullary cavity of the sternum, T1-T7. The patient regained muscle strength in both lower limbs and was able to walk again after three weeks. The patient was discharged after hepatic and renal function and proteinuria values had returned to normal. Cell orientation of swimming bacteria: From theoretical simulation to experimental evaluation

Abstract: The motion of small bacteria consists of two phases: relatively long runs alternate with intermittent stops, back-ups, or tumbles, depending on the species. In polar monotrichous bacteria, the flagellum is anchored at the cell pole inherited from the parent generation (old pole) and is surrounded by a chemoreceptor cluster. During forward swimming, the leading pole is always the pole recently formed in cell division (new pole). The flagella of the peritrichous bacterium Escherichia coli often form a bundle behind the old pole. Its cell orientation and receptor positioning during runs generally mimic that of monotrichous bacteria. When encountering a solid surface, peritrichous bacteria exhibit a circular motion with the leading pole dipping downward. Some polar monotrichous bacteria also perform circular motion near solid boundaries, but during back-ups. In this case, the leading pole points upward. Very little is known about behavior near milieu-air interfaces. Biophysical simulations have revealed some of the mechanisms underlying these phenomena, but leave many questions unanswered. Combining biophysics with molecular techniques will certainly advance our understanding of bacterial locomotion.
Forecast of Stock Index Volatility Using Wavelet Support Vector Machines

Abstract: Support vector machines (SVM) is one of the important intelligent forecasting methods. Wavelet support vector machines (WSVM) is a kind of SVM, which replace the ordinary kernel function in SVM as wavelet kernel function. Using range volatility as the proxy of the true volatility, this paper applied WSVM with three different wavelet kernel functions to forecasting Shanghai Composite Index (SHCI) in China stock markets. In-sample and out-of-sample forecasting results from the three WSVM models are compared with those of SVM model with Radial basic kernel function (RBF) to test the effectiveness of WSVM. Empirical results indicate that for the evaluation indices HRMSE and HMAE, WSVM with three wavelet kernel functions are superior to SVM with RBF kernel function for in-sample and out-of-sample volatility forecasting accuracy. And the WSVM using Morlet kernel function has better volatility forecasting performance than the other two WSVM models.
Effects of Exogenous Nitric Oxide on Wheat Exposed to Enhanced Ultraviolet-B Radiation  [PDF]

We explored the use of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) on alleviating effects of UV-B light on winter wheat development. Triticum aestivum L. cv. Linyou 7287 seeds were irradiated with UV-B (10.08 kJ·m2·d–1) (enhanced UV-B) and watered with either water or 100 μmol·L–1 SNP solution. Plants were also watered with the SNP alone. The results showed that enhanced UV-B produced negative effects on seedling development. Leaf length decreased and seedling biomass dropped significantly compared with the control. Photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) dropped, and chlorophyll and carotenoid content as well as the ATPase activity declined. Content of UV-absorbing compounds and activity of the POD increased compared to the control. Application of the SNP, a NO donor partially protected wheat seedlings exposed to elevated UV-B radiation in that their leaf lengths and biomass accumulation were enhanced compared to the UV-B treatment alone. SNP also improved the contents of chlorophyll, carotenoid and UV-absorbing compounds in leaves. ATPase activity was enhanced but no influence on POD activity. Furthermore, the application of SNP alone showed a favorable effect on seedling growth compared with the control.

Abstract: This study used different intensity ultrasound treatments, wheat seedlings in the germination energy, germination rate, growth potential, root length, and number of lateral roots optimal radiation dose selection. Studied under drought stress were the optimal dose of radiation treatment of wheat seedling leaf relative water content (RWC), protein content, Methane Dicarboxylic Aldehyde (MDA) content, relative conductivity, Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and the impact of amylase activity. Studies have shown that after ultrasonic treatment enhanced drought resistance of wheat seedlings, alleviate drought stress on wheat seedling injury to 65 W 15 min ultrasonic treatment works best.
