Abstract: a successful aging process is multidimensional and involves physical, cognitive, emotional and social factors. this exploratory and descriptive study investigated the perceptions of elderly men concerning limitations and gains related to the aging process and protective factors in old age. thirteen men older than 60 years of age with varied levels of education participated in semi-structured interviews and their answers were submitted to qualitative analysis. seven subcategories emerged from the thematic axis “results of aging”, with an emphasis on physical losses and personal gains favored by the accumulation of experiences. in the thematic axis “health in old age” four measures to improve health were categorized, with a predominance of answers related to the search of medical services and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. the participants presented a biopsychosocial perspective of factors related to aging well though with an emphasis on biological variables.
Enfrentamento, aspectos clínicos e sociodemográficos de pessoas vivendo com HIV/Aids
Seidl, Eliane Maria Fleury;
Psicologia em Estudo , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-73722005000300010
Abstract: the study aimed at describing coping strategies of people living with hiv/aids and identifying associations between modalities of coping and sociodemographic variables such as sex, schooling and marital status, as well as clinical ones (symptomatic versus asymptomatic conditions). a convenience sample was composed with 241 hiv+ people, 161 (66,8%) were men between the ages of 20 and 64 (m=37,4), 169 (70,1%) symptomatic. the instruments used included structured questionnaires and a brazilian version of a scale for measure strategies of coping, with assisted application and fulfilling of scale without the presence of researchers. results showed variability in the coping strategies used, with predomination of problem-focused coping. amongst women and less educated individuals there was a prevalence of emotion-focused coping and search for religious practices. the results provide subsidy for hiv-positive patients to draw sustenance from psychological support. limitations of conceptualization and evaluation of coping are discussed and must be taken into consideration for future reference in further research
Targeting Brazilian Market through Digital Branding Strategies: The Relevance of the Cultural Dimension  [PDF]
Lilian Maria de Souza Almeida
Open Journal of Business and Management (OJBM) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/ojbm.2015.31004
Abstract: While Internet has been achieving its omnipresence worldwide and offering to companies the opportunity of trading in a “no-borders” market, global brands, and those aspiring to become global, face the challenge of dealing with significant cultural differences. Emergent economies account for one of the greatest opportunities for global brands interested in extending their business overseas through digital channels. Among these economies, Brazil has been receiving special focus lately as a promising consumer market. Working from a theoretical point of view through literature and simultaneously examining companies as potential paradigms, this study aims to provide suggestions for global brands interested in targeting the Brazilian market through effective cross-cultural digital branding strategies. The results are valuable insights about how to establish better communication with Brazilian consumers and also offer some guidance to help marketers to keep brands desired and admired in Brazil. It was mainly concluded that global brands should find out the right balance between a standardized and an adapted cultural approach in order to establish a trust-worthy proximity with Brazilian consumers on the digital environment.
Dentro e fora da caixa preta: a mente sob um olhar evolucionista
Moura, Maria Lucia Seidl de;
Psicologia: Teoria e Pesquisa , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-37722005000200003
Abstract: this article aims to present a brief history of conceptions of mind in the last decades and to discuss evolutionary models of mind. the cognitivist movement, in which the mind is the protagonist, and evolutionary psychology, in which the philogenetic history of mind is contemplated, are focused. different models, modular and including central processes, are presented. the importance of considering ontogenesis is discussed, and two ontogenetic perspectives of the mind are presented. the conclusion about the direction of the contemporary efforts of comprehension of the human mind is optimistic, with the proposition of integration of aspects of the models presented.
Monitoramento e avalia??o da ades?o ao tratamento antirretroviral para HIV/aids: desafios e possibilidades
Polejack,Larissa; Seidl,Eliane Maria Fleury;
Ciência & Saúde Coletiva , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-81232010000700029
Abstract: the advances in research and treatment regimens have transformed aids into a chronic illness, with a marked increase in the quality of life of those living with hiv/aids. this brings new challenges in understanding and treating the disease and those living with it. from this perspective, adherence to antiretroviral treatment (art) has been made a priority in the public policy of countries such as brazil. this article discusses the challenges and potential solutions to the monitoring and evaluation of adherence to art as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the techniques available for its assessment. emphasis was given to the work done in countries with scarce resource with patients who have little or no formal education. it is necessary to take into account logistic, conceptual and empirical aspects in the choice of methods to monitor the adherence, examining sociocultural and economic contexts, especially in countries with scarce resource. the conclusion is that identify adequate and effective ways of measuring adherence remains an important challenge for those who work with hiv/aids.

Correa, Jane;Moura, Maria Lucia Seidl de;
Psicologia: Reflex?o e Crítica , 1997, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-79721997000100006
Abstract: mental calculation receives no special attention in school curricula and it has been often reduced to rote memorization. nevertheless its study has shown relevance to the comprehension of specific cognitive processes with direct implications for mathematical education. strategies used take form of theorems in action (vergnaud, 1985). this study investigated the strategies of mental calculation used by a sample of 160 elementary school children from first to fourth grade in public and private schools. the results confirmed the use of multiple strategies in addition and subtraction problems. the holistic, flexible and active nature of mental calculation was also evident. this study contributed to a better understanding of children?s construction of mathematical knowledge. the results are also discussed with respect to educational applications.

Albano,Lilian Maria José;
Revista Panamericana de Salud Pública , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S1020-49892000000100005
Abstract: the availability of genetics services in hospitals should be an issue of public concern. having genetics services helps shorten the time spent in making diagnoses and reduces the average number of inpatient days; it also helps accelerate the choice of adequate treatments, prevents or minimizes sequelae, and, ultimately, reduces costs. the objective of the present study was to describe the closing down in 1996 of the genetics division at the menino jesus children's hospital, a pediatric institution located in the city of s?o paulo, sp, brazil. a retrospective analysis was carried out of the work performed by this division between 1992 and 1996, with an emphasis on the detection of chromosomal abnormalities. of all cases assessed during the study period, 571 were entered into a database. some kind of chromosomal abnormality was observed in 20% of the 350 karyotypes performed. the existence of genetics services in hospitals helps minimize the appearance of clinical symptoms in carriers of genetic abnormalities, improves the quality of life of these patients, and enables them to receive information regarding risk of recurrence, while preventing the waste of resources that results from tests that are costly and unnecessary. such benefits amply justify the investment in setting up genetics services of the type described here.
