Association of ADAM33 gene polymorphisms with adult allergic asthma and rhinitis in a Chinese Han population

Abstract: Six polymorphic sites (V4, T+1, T2, T1, S1, and Q-1) were genotyped in 128 patients with AR, 181 patients with AS, and 151 healthy controls (CTR). Genotypes were determined by the polymerase chain restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test with Haploview software.The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), V4 G/C, T+1 A/G, and T1 G/A, of the ADAM33 gene may be the causal variants in AR, whereas ADAM33 V4 G/C, T2 A/G, T1 G/A, and Q-1A/G may participate in the susceptibility of AS.These results suggest that polymorphisms of the ADAM33 gene may modify individual susceptibility to AR and AS in a Chinese Han population.Rhinitis is defined as inflammation of the nasal mucosa and is characterised by nasal discharge, blockage, sneezing, and itching [1,2]. Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airway which causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing in susceptible individuals. These episodes are usually associated with widespread, but variable airflow obstruction that is often reversible, either spontaneously or with treatment. The inflammation also causes an associated increase in existing bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) to a variety of stimuli [1,2]. Epidemiologic studies have consistently shown that asthma and rhinitis often coexist in the same patients in every region of the world [3-5], suggesting the concept of 'one airway, one disease.' The basic premise is that rhinitis and asthma represent the manifestations of one syndrome in two parts of the respiratory tract [6]. Abstract: Real-time reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) has become the most frequently used system for studies of gene expression. Manystudies have provided reliable evidence that the transcription levels of reference genes are not constant at different developmental stages and in different experimental conditions. However, suitable reference genes which are stably expressed in polyploid preimplantation embryos of different developmental stages have not yet been identified. Therefore, it is critical to verify candidate reference genes to analyze gene expression accurately in both diploid and polyploid embryos. We examined the expression levels of 12 candidate reference genes in preimplantation embryos of four different ploidies at six developmental stages. Stability analysis of the reference genes was performed by four independent software programs, and the stability of three genes was evaluated by comparison with the Oct4 expression level during preimplantation development in diploid embryos. The expression levels of most genes in the polyploid embryos were higher than that in the diploid embryos, but the increasing degree were disproportionate with the ploidies. There were no significant difference in reference gene expressions among embryos of different ploidies when they reached the morula stage, and the expression level remained flat until the blastocyst stage. Ubc, Ppia, and Pgk1 were the three most stable reference genes in diploid and polyploid embryos.

Abstract: 牌楼似斑状二长花岗岩出露于武当隆起的西部,是南秦岭地区新元古代岩浆活动的典型代表.锆石LA-ICP-MS年代学研究获得其成岩年龄为667.2±3.5 Ma.岩体Na2O+K2O含量和A/CNK分别介于8.31%~8.47 %和0.89%~0.94%,显示出亚碱性、准铝质特征;同时样品富集大离子亲石元素Rb、K、U、Pb及高场强元素Nb、Ta,亏损Sr、P、Ti和重稀土元素,具有较高的Zr+Nb+Y+Ce含量以及10 000 Ga/Al、FeOT/(FeOT+MgO)比值,出现特征矿物铁韭闪石和富铁钠闪石,属于A1型花岗岩.牌楼岩体ε Hf( t )主要集中于-1.8~+1.5,来源于软流圈交代岩石圈地幔类似于OIB熔体,并伴随有一定的地壳混染作用.微量元素模拟显示,母岩浆在成岩之前发生了大规模的斜长石和辉石的分离结晶.综合区域研究资料、地质年代学、地球化学及同位素特征,结果表明武当隆起在新元古代成冰纪处于板片断裂的弧后伸展环境.
As a typical case of the Neoproterozoic magmatism in South Qinling, the Pailou porphyritic monzogranite exposed in the western margin of Wudang uplift. Zircon U-Pb dating on the granite yields an age of 667.2±3.5 Ma. The granite shows sub-alkaline and metaluminous affinities, with Na2O+K2O and A/CNK values ranging 8.31%-8.47% and 0.89-0.94, respectively. The monzogranite enriched in LILEs (i.e. Rb, K, U and Pb) and HFSEs (i.e. Nb and Ti), and depleted in Sr, P, Ti and HREE. Due to the high content of Zr+Nb+Y+Ce and ratios of 10 000 Ga/Al and FeOT/(FeOT+MgO), as well as characteristic minerals of hastingsite and ferropargasite, the Pailou monzogranite displaying A1type geochemical features. The zircon ε Hf( t ) values of study rocks mainly varying from -1.8 to +1.5, indicating that the magma likely to have been sourced from mantle metasomatized by asthenosphere, OIB-like melts, with minor crustal assimilation. Based on modal calculations of trace elements, the fractional crystallization of plagioclase and pyroxene has been proposed during magmatic evolution. Integrating the data obtained from studies on geology, geochronology, geochemistry and isotopic compositions, we propose that the Pailou magmatism was the product of anorogenic magmatism and formed in tectonic setting of a backarc rift setting that probably developed in relation to slab tearing during continued slab rollback

Abstract: Coptis chinensis Franch, a widely used Traditional Chinese Medicine, shows various kinds of bioactivity. The major active components of the herb are considered to be alkaloids. Thus, preparative separation of these alkaloids is critical important for further pharmacology and mechanism studies. In the paper, five alkaloids from C. chinensis were purified by HSCCC using the solvent system composed of chloro-form-metha- nol-water (2:1:1, v/v/v) single prepared. The content of each solvent in solvent system were determined by gas chromatography (GC), then according the ratios of solvents in each phase to prepare the mobile and stationary phase respectively. And a comparative study was carried out between together preparation and single preparation of the solvent system. The purities and recoveries of all the products were over 98.5% and 92%. However, 134 mL chloroform, 336 mL methanol and 452 mL water were saved when the two phase were singled by GC. Our research showed an economical method for separating alkaloids from C. chinensis by HSCCC using the solvent system single prepared by GC.

Modeling the Relationship between Texture Semantics and Textile Images

Abstract: Texture semantics, which is the kind of feelings that the texture feature of an image would arouse in people, is important in texture analysis. In this paper, we study the relationship between texture semantics and textile images, and propose a novel parametric mapping model to predict texture semantics from textile images. To represent rich texture semantics and enable it to participate in computation, 2D continuous semantic space, where the axes correspond to hard-soft and warm-cool, is first adopted to quantitatively describe texture semantics. Then texture features of textile images are extracted using Gabor decomposition. Finally, the mapping model between texture features and texture semantics in the semantic space is built using three different methods: linear regression, k-nearest neighbor (KNN) and multi-layered perceptron (MLP). The performance of the proposed mapping model is evaluated with a dataset of 1352 textile images. The results confirm that the mapping model is effective and especially KNN and MLP reach the good performance. We further apply the mapping model to two applications: automatic textile image annotation with texture semantics and textile image search based on texture semantics. The subjective experimental results are consistent with human perception, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed mapping model. The proposed model and its applications can be applied to various automation systems in commercial textile industry.
Representation of Dormant and Active Microbial Dynamics for Ecosystem Modeling

Abstract: Dormancy is an essential strategy for microorganisms to cope with environmental stress. However, global ecosystem models typically ignore microbial dormancy, resulting in notable model uncertainties. To facilitate the consideration of dormancy in these large-scale models, we propose a new microbial physiology component that works for a wide range of substrate availabilities. This new model is based on microbial physiological states and the major parameters are the maximum specific growth and maintenance rates of active microbes and the ratio of dormant to active maintenance rates. A major improvement of our model over extant models is that it can explain the low active microbial fractions commonly observed in undisturbed soils. Our new model shows that the exponentially-increasing respiration from substrate-induced respiration experiments can only be used to determine the maximum specific growth rate and initial active microbial biomass, while the respiration data representing both exponentially-increasing and non-exponentially-increasing phases can robustly determine a range of key parameters including the initial total live biomass, initial active fraction, the maximum specific growth and maintenance rates, and the half-saturation constant. Our new model can be incorporated into existing ecosystem models to account for dormancy in microbially-driven processes and to provide improved estimates of microbial activities.
