Moreira, Letícia F;Barbosa, Alfredo J. A;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442011000500009
Abstract: introduction: ghrelin is a 28 amino acid peptide mainly secreted by endocrine cells of the gastric mucosa, which is believed to have a modulating effect on cell growth. objective: to assess the presence of ghrelin and its precursor preproghrelin molecule in endocrine hyperplasias associated with atrophic body gastritis (abg). material and methods: endoscopic biopsies from 54 patients with abg were processed for immunohistochemistry and specific antibodies against ghrelin, preproghrelin and chromogranin were applied. we assessed the immunoreactive cells in endocrine hyperplasia from the atrophic mucosa and intestinal and pseudo-antral metaplasia areas. results: there was ghrelin expression in a variable number of hyperplastic endocrine cells from all patients studied. there was a statistically significant difference in the number of hyperplastic nodules with more than 50% immunostained cells for chromogranin and ghrelin and for chromogranin and preproghrelin. the mean number of hyperplastic nodules identified by chromogranin was 8.6 per patient. most nodules were immunoreactive to ghrelin and preproghrelin. the presence of ghrelin and preproghrelin expression was uncommon in glands showing intestinal metaplasia: four (9.5%) and nine (21.4%) cases, respectively. in contrast, they were relatively frequent in pseudo-antral metaplasia areas: 37 (72.5%) and 26 (50.9%) cases, respectively. conclusion: ghrelin- and preproghrelin-immunoreactive cells are frequently present in endocrine hyperplasias associated with abg. however, further studies are required to determine to what extent these hormones act as modulators of hyperplastic nodular growth and evolution.
Infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and its importance as an etiological agent in childhood community-acquired pneumonias
Vervloet, Letícia Alves;Marguet, Christophe;Camargos, Paulo Augusto Moreira;
Brazilian Journal of Infectious Diseases , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-86702007000500012
Abstract: this manuscript reviewed the literature on infection by mycoplasma pneumoniae with emphasis on etiological aspects of childhood community-acquired pneumonias. bibliographical research was carried out from pubmed medline, mdconsult, highwire, lilacs, and direct research over the past 10 years with the following keywords: mycoplasma pneumoniae, pneumonia, and childhood. fifty-four articles were selected. mycoplasma pneumoniae has a high incidence in childhood. clinical presentation includes respiratory and extrarespiratory symptoms. mycoplasma pneumoniae lung infection can be confused with viral or bacterial pneumonia and is unresponsive to beta-lactams. in addition, co-infections have been reported. mycoplasma pneumoniae infection occurs in all age groups, being less frequent and more severe in children under the age of five. its incidence as a causal agent is high. mycoplasma pneumoniae infections constitute 20%-40% of all community-acquired pneumonias; the severity is highly variable, and this condition may lead to severe sequelae. mycoplasma pneumoniae frequency is underestimated in clinical practice because of the lack of specific features and a diagnosis that needs serology or pcr. effective management of m. pneumoniae infections can usually be achieved with macrolides. in brazil, epidemiological studies are needed in order to assess the incidence of this bacterium.

Costa, Ricardo Justen Moreira da;Krauss-Silva, Letícia;
Cadernos de Saúde Pública , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-311X2004000800013
Abstract: the objective of the present study was to assess the available evidence regarding antibiotic prophylaxis taking the case of abdominal hysterectomy, as an aid to decisions related to coverage and to the development of evidence-based clinical guidelines. using a previously elaborated protocol, the pertinence and quality of double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials were examined. clinical heterogeneity among studies was also analyzed. the studies were found to be homogeneous, considering p > 0.10 as the significance level for rejecting heterogeneity. combination of the 16 selected studies resulted in a summary rate ratio of 0.49 (95%ci: 0.41-0.59), i.e., efficacy of 51%, and in a summary rate difference of 11% (95%ci: 8-14), utilizing the fixed effects model. results according to the random effects model were very similar. exploratory analysis of subgroups of single versus multiple doses did not indicate more benefit for multiple dose interventions. evidence from comparative trials is insufficient to consider third-generation cephalosporins more efficacious than first-generation ones.
Personalidade e religiosidade/espiritualidade (R/E)

Revista de Psiquiatria Clínica , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-60832009000400005
Abstract: background: although there are many studies linking the religious context with fisical and mental health, there is little research on the interface between religiousness/spirituality and personality. objectives: the main goal was to review the empirical research on the relationship between religiosity, spirituality and personality. methods: a survey of the academic production through virtual databases: pubmed and psychinfo, published until january of 2008 and using the combinations: "personality and spiritu*" and "personality and religio*" was conducted, in addition to articles presented in a meta-analysis about the subject. results: high religiousness is associated with low psychoticism and high agreeableness and conscientiousness. conscientiousness in adolescents can be a significant predictor for the higher religiosity in the early adulthood. and the dimension of religiosity seems to be a potentially candidate to be beyond the big five. discussion: the belief in a dimension of religiosity, in a transcendent reality or in a personal god, in some cases, does not seem to show associations between any of the five factors of personality. this can indicate that the r/e is a potential sixth factor of personality that is not present in the current models of personality.

Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2004,
Abstract: This article aims at investigating the beliefs of teachers' and students' of English as a foreign language in the public school network of the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The analysis focuses on five main topics, namely, aptitude to learn languages, the degree of difficulty of a particular language, the nature of learning languages in general, the learning strategies and the degree of autonomy and motivation of the students involved in the research. The results provide evidence that teachers' and students' beliefs are relatively similar as far as the nature and the degree of difficulty of English are concerned, as well as in relation to the notion of aptitude to learn languages and even in relation to the learning strategies used in the classroom. However, they differ considerably in the vision that both groups have of the student.

Abstract:

Glutamate excitotoxicity has been postulated as a putative mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, a disease that can cause retinal cell damage. Thus, the modulation of glutamatergic parameters is a putative therapeutic target to prevent excitotoxic retinal injury. Here, we investigated the effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids (w3) in the retinal glutamate transport system in basal and ischemic conditions. Female Wistar rats were divided into two groups: w3 diet (w3 group) and w3 deficient-diet (D group). Their pups, at 60 days old, were used for the experiments. Retinal ischemia, a mechanism involved in the physiopathology of glaucoma, was induced by high intraocular pressure (HIOP, 140 180 mmHg for 45 min) to impair retinal blood flow. Analyses were performed 7 days after ischemia. The D group showed a decreased glutamate uptake in basal conditions and after HIOP when compared to the w3 group. After HIOP, there was a decrease in glutamate uptake in the D group that was not observed in the w3 group (p < 0.005). Concerning glutamate transporters, the w3 group presented higher levels of GLT-1 compared to the D group in basal and ischemic conditions. After HIOP, EAAC1 was increased in both groups, while GLT-1 increased only in the D group, compared to basal levels. GLAST and EAAT5 presented no alterations. The modulation of the glutamatergic system by dietary w3 fatty acids points to a potential mechanism by which w3 PUFAs exert beneficial effects in the retina.
