Brazilian Dental Journal , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-64402012000200011
Abstract: this study analyzed the weight loss and surface roughness caused in plexiglass specimens by conventional dentifrices (sorriso, colgate and close up) and specific dentifrices used for cleaning of dentures (corega and dentu creme). plexiglass specimens were divided into 6 groups (n=6) including: a control (distilled water - dw) and experimental groups. brushing was performed in a toothbrushing machine with a soft brush and a dentifrice suspension and dw according to different brushing times (50, 100, 200 and 250 min -18,000, 36,000, 72,000 and 90,000 cycles, respectively, calculated to correspond to 1, 2, 4 and 5 years of regular brushing). the results of weight loss and surface roughness were analyzed by anova and tukey’s test at 5% significance level. in all tested times, the effect of dw was insignificant. dentifrices differed significantly from dw in the initial period. corega dentifrice caused greater mass loss in all studied times, followed by close up. dentifrices resulted in a surface roughness similar to the dw at 50 min. in the other times, sorriso, colgate and corega caused more surface roughness than dw. in conclusion, specific dentifrices caused larger mass loss and lower surface roughness as conventional dentifrice.

Brazilian Dental Journal , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-64402009000400012
Abstract: this study evaluated the color stability, surface roughness and flexural strength of a microwave-polymerized acrylic resin after immersion in sodium hypochlorite (naocl), simulating 20 min of disinfection daily during 180 days. forty disk-shaped (15 x 4 mm) and 40 rectangular (65 x 10 x 3 mm) specimens were prepared with a microwave-polymerized acrylic resin (onda-cryl). specimens were immersed in either 0.5% naocl, 1% naocl, clorox/calgon and distilled water (control). color measurements were determined by a portable colorimeter. three parallel lines, separated by 1.0 mm, were registered on each specimen before and after immersion procedures to analyze the surface roughness. the flexural strength was measured using a 3-point bending test in a universal testing machine with a 50 kgf load cell and a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. data were analyzed statistically by anova and tukey's test (?=0.05). there was no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) among the solutions for color, surface roughness and flexural strength. it may be concluded that immersion in naocl solutions simulating short-term daily use during 180 days did not influence the color stability, surface roughness and flexural strength of a microwave-polymerized acrylic resin.

Abstract: while men technologies spread throughout the country, the role that textbooks play in classrooms is unquestionable. further than a tool widely used by teachers (men and women) in their educational practices, textbooks are cultural artefacts producing knowledge. multiple cultural pedagogies are present and circulate in them, teaching lessons that go much beyond the curricular content, encouraging students (men or women) to be in particular subject positions. from these observations, the present paper is devoted to analysing the current, active and cultural pedagogies in textbooks, most specifically the so-called gauchismo pedagogy, a term that was coined to designate how people learn to be a "gaucho" (someone from rio grande do sul state) in different social and cultural situations. the study has investigated how the gauchismo pedagogy is present in early grades of elementary school history textbooks, from 1960 to 2005, its recurrences and ruptures. data points to a prevailing way to understand the gaucho identity, particularly relating it to the symbolic and mythic gaucho. this prevailing representation is a strong cultural pedagogy, producing knowledge, which teaches how to be a gaucho, encouraging students to be in subject positions and identifying with this pedagogy.

Bruno Lemos Batista, Letícia Ramos Nacano, Rodolfo de Freitas, Vanessa Cristina de Oliveira-Souza, Fernando Barbosa
Food and Nutrition Sciences (FNS) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/fns.2012.31019
Abstract: The levels of Hg and Pb (toxic elements) and Ca, Fe, I, K, Mo (essential elements) were measured in 44 Brazilian rice samples divided among white polished (W), parboiled white (PW) and parboiled brown (PB). Rice grains were ana- lyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Concentrations of toxic elements varied from 0.3 to 13.4 and 0.4 to 14.5 ng?g–1 for Hg and Pb, respectively. The values for essential elements were in the same range of those for rice produced in other countries. In general parboiled samples presented higher levels of all elements in study compared to white samples. The Estimated Daily Intake through rice consumption was 0.44 μg for Pb, 0.22 μg for Hg, 0.65 μg for I, 39.5 μg for Mo, 0.43 mg for Fe, 4.1 mg for Ca and 88.9 mg for K. Our findings demonstrated that rice can contribute significantly to the RDIs of molybdenum and potassium, but it can not be considered an important source of I, Fe and Ca. Moreover, the estimated dail

Freitas, Rosana de Carvalho Martinelli;Nélsis, Camila Magalh?es;Nunes, Letícia Soares;
Revista Katálysis , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-49802012000100004
Abstract: the purpose of this article is to present the theoretical implications and consequences of the concept of sustainable development, with an emphasis on the elucidation of differences in their understanding and use. based on a bibliographic review, the paper first reviews marx's understanding about the relationship between man, nature and capitalism. it then presents marxist approaches that are critical of the concept of sustainable development, which, although commonly used, is ambiguous and the motive of considerable controversy. finally, factors are present for a new approach to environmental issues considering the unsustainability inherent to the capitalist mode of production and the destruction that accompanies it.
Qualidade de hortali as comercializadas no noroeste do Paraná, Brasil QUALITY OF GREEN VEGETABLES MARKETED IN THE NORTHWEST OF PARANá, BRAZIL
From July/2002 to July/2004, 66 samples were collected in 13 smallholdings and 181 samples in 17 free markets. Heads of lettuce (varieties flat, curly and American), watercress and rocket salad, picked up randomly and in triplicate, were submitted to Oliveira & Germano's and Kynioun staining techniques and to the research of total and thermotolerant coliforms. The total index of parasitism of the vegetables of free markets (63%) and smallholdings (71.1%) didn't differ statistically. The fresh vegetables from smallholdings have shown more protozoa than (10/47) that from the free markets (19/114). Rhabditoidea larvae and Ancylostomatoidea eggs were equally distributed in the fresh vegetables of both places. Parasitic forms of other species were also found. All the curly lettuce samples collected in the smallholdings presented total and thermotolerant bacteria index incompatible with the human consumption. The difficult in doing laboratorial diagnose at the genre and specie level of the human parasites in fresh vegetables and the sanitary surveillance chal
