Abstract: medical residency (mr) is known as the best form for a doctor to start his professional life and to developing his skills in a specialty. there is however a discrepancy between the number of graduate/ candidates for medical residency and the number of vacancies. in this context, students in the 5th and 6th years of medical school are sacrificing their medical graduation during their internships to dedicate themselves to preparatory courses (pcs) for the medical residency. this study sought to investigate the expectations of the students with regard to rm as well as/ their opinion about the creation of the pcs. 70.83% of the students of the 7th, 8th and 9th semesters/ of the medical school (ms) answered questionnaires with eight objective questions. they all stated to know the pc method; 76%/ intended to enroll; out of those who did not intend on to enroll, 63.17% claim that the/ main reason/ is poor financial conditions. 59.45% disapproves the current method of admission tests for mr. in conclusion, it is necessary to adapt the current teaching methods of the medical school to the model of admission tests for mr. the criteria for admission to mr should be adjusted, also considering the practical skills. the medical schools should always make inexpensive, up-to-date and modern educational material available to the students.

Abstract: in brazil there are not enough vacancies for medical residency (mr) and a very high competition for vacancies in certain specialties and regions. this favors the establishment of preparatory courses (pcs) for mr tests. medical students have been increasingly neglecting their curricular activities for en rolling in these preparatory courses. for evaluating the effectiveness of these courses, a questionnaire was applied to the candidates for mr at the university hospital of federal university of juiz de fora. 74.7% from the 368 applicants agreed to participate in the study, most of which (72%) were frequenting pcs. there was no significant difference in the rate of approval among the candidates who had prepared themselves in pcs and those who did not. on the other hand, the average grade of the candidates that took pcs was 4.07 points higher (66.89 versus 62.82, p < 0.05). it is concluded that in the traditional evaluation model, whose theoretical test corresponds to 90% of the final grade, the preparation of the students who took pcs is more effective, valuing memorization above medical abilities. thus, the 50/50 model, in which the practical test corresponds to 50% of the final grade, can be considered an adequate proposal.

Abstract: the objective of this experiment was to estimate the dietary phosphorus requirement (p) for maintenance of kid goats in the growth phase by the endogenous loss method and comparative slaughter technique. twenty-one males, average 18 kg lw, were used. from those, three were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment, as reference, and the remaining 18 animals were fed isocaloric and isoproteic diets in a completely randomized design with 3x2 factorial arrangement (level of dietary p [0.12, 0.21 and 0.29% as fed] and feeding way of the diet [restricted and ad libitum]). the experimental period was 37 days, with 30-day of adaptation and seven days for total collection of feces and urine. at the end of the collection period, three animals, from each treatment, were slaughtered. the dietary requirements of p for maintenance were estimated the by fecal and urinary endogenous loss (endogenous loss) and the p retention in the animal body in relation to their intake and in that retained in the reference animal (comparative slaughter). the average values were: coefficient of apparent and real absorption of p, -157+30, 98+10, 43+24, and 65+33; 235+09, 145+24%, respectively; daily fecal and urinary endogenous loss of 8.84 and 4.84 mg kg/ lw, respectively, p balance 187.62+153.87; 14.0+160.59; 85.96+337.85 mg/d; and ?11.42+10.98; 1.04+9.14; -2.33+11.69 mg/kg lw, respectively. the daily dietary p requeriments for maintenance were estimated in 72 and 58.46 mg/kg lw by the endogenous loss and comparative slaughter, respectively.

Abstract: physical exercise can promote benefits in the functionality of the venous system. however, in the strength training context, contraindication concerning its practice is observed, since it can be related to worsening of venous dysfunctions. objective: to analyze the effects of resistance exercises practice on venous diameter of physical inactivity women with chronic lower limb venous insufficiency. methods: twenty-two women with age between 21 and 58 years (34.27 ± 12 years) were randomized divided in two groups: experimental (n = 12) and control (n = 10). the resistance training was carried out over a period of 16 weeks and the venous diameter measurements were determined at the left lower limb great and small saphenous veins by a color eco- doppler. two-way anova was used to determine the modifications in veins diameter between groups and training moments (pre and post) (p < 0.05). results: statistically significant alterations were not found in smaller saphenous vein diameter (upper, medium and lower points: p = 0.80; 0.32 and 0.20, respectively), great saphenous vein on leg level (p = 0.17; 0.74 and 0.96) and great saphenous vein on thigh level (p = 0.57; 0.67 and 0.52). conclusion: resistance exercise practice can be considered a treatment or intervention since it does not promote changes on the venous diameter of the venous system of women with chronic lower limb venous insufficiency.

Development of Mathematical Models for the Analysis of Hepatitis Delta Virus Viral Dynamics
Bruno C. de Sousa,Celso Cunha
PLOS ONE , 2012, DOI: 10.1371/journal.pone.0012512
Abstract: Mathematical models have shown to be extremely helpful in understanding the dynamics of different virus diseases, including hepatitis B. Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a satellite virus of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). In the liver, production of new HDV virions depends on the presence of HBV. There are two ways in which HDV can occur in an individual: co-infection and super-infection. Co-infection occurs when an individual is simultaneously infected by HBV and HDV, while super-infection occurs in persons with an existing chronic HBV infection.

This article discusses the home visiting in mental health, bringing up the meaning of the relationships built among the staff members, inside the family attended and its members and among the staff and the family. This way it can contribute to the family development and to the user social inclusion. The study basis is an experience in a psychiatric hospital and an attitude triangle was designed inside the psychiatric reform principles: ethics, theoric action and reflexive atitude. Conclusions are that questioning concepts as the inability of the psychiatric patient to deal with the world, the family as the main question leading to the disease and its inability to take care of the patient can lead the user to regain his citizenship. Since the psychologist knows the importance of the relations for the building of meaning and due to his capacity of listening to others, his role in the home visiting staff was defined as the forerunner of this relationship change.

Nova Economia , 2004,
Abstract: The geographic concentration of firms has been successful recently in many ways: international competitiveness of these firms, regional income growth, etc. The Italian industrial districts are the case of highest relevance in international literature. In Joinville, there is a significant geographic concentration of mold manufacturers for the plastics industry. When a geographic concentration of firms is a cluster, the potential growth and competitiveness of the firms increase. This paper sought to determine whether this geographic concentration of firms was in effect a cluster, and to study its potential of growth and of competitiveness were this true. The finding was that the geographic concentration of mold producers in Joinville does represent a cluster and has significant growth potential. However, this cluster is less developed and less competitive when compared to the major mold producer clusters in the world.
