Abstract: sjogren - larsson syndrome is a rare autosomal recessively inherited neurocutaneous disorder which occurs with 100% penetrance and is classically characterized by ichthyosis, spasticity and mental handicap. the disease is caused by mutations in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene. the ocular manifestations are highly characteristic bilateral, glistening yellow-white retinal dots from the age of 1 to 2 years onward. the number of dots increases whit age. the extent of the macular abnormality does not correlate with the severity of the ichthyosis or with the severity of the neurological abnormalities. we report the clinical characteristics and ocular manifestations associated with the sj?gren-larsson syndrome in two siblings, emphasizing the clinical importance of the ophthalmological examination of the sj?gren-larsson syndrome. bpls, a eleven year old boy and mpls, a ten year old girl from non-consanguinous parents, presenting congenital ichthyosis, spastic diplegia and mental retardation. miopia, fotofobia, subnormal visual acuity and glistening yellow-white crystalline deposits that were located in the foveal and parafoveal area were found in the ophthalmologic examination.

Abstract: dengue fever is a well known viral infection transmitted through the bite of an infected aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus mosquito. its geographic distribution covers over 100 countries. clinical presentation is variable and depends upon the age and immunological status of the patient. it can be classified as asymptomatic illness, dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic or dengue shock syndrome. ocular manifestations of dengue have been described, however there are few reports on neurological involvement. we hereby report two cases of bilateral optic neuritis after dengue viral infection. both of them rapidly recovered the visual acuity without treatment.
Desempenho de híbridos experimentais de tomateiro para processamento industrial nas condi??es edafo-climáticas do cerrado brasileiro

Abstract: genetic parameters for yield and processing characteristics were estimated using 26 experimental processing tomato hybrids in an experiment conducted in cristalina, goiás state, brazil. the commercial hybrids 'hypell-108' and 'rtp1095' were used as standards. the experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. each plot consisted of two rows (30 plants each) spaced 0.50 m apart with a within row distance of 0.25 m. the following parameters were evaluated: mature fruit yield (fm), green fruit yield (fv), total fruit yield (pt), uniformity of fruit ripening (um = (fm/pt) x 100), soluble solids [brix (°b)], paste yield (rp), fruit color (cf) and fruit firmness (ff). significant differences were found among the 26 experimental hybrids for fm, fv, pt, um, °b, rp and cf. experimental hybrids (as a group) were superior to the commercial hybrids for fm, fv, pt and rp. the commercial hybrids (as a group) had superior performance only for °b, as compared to experimental hybrids. however, six experimental hybrids had °b values similar to that of 'hypell-108'. a negative genotypic correlation (-0.40) was observed between fv and fm. a negative (-0.27) genotypic correlation was observed between cf and °b. both associations are undesirable from the breeding for processing industry standpoint. a multivariate analysis indicated fm, um, °b and cf as being the traits with highest relevance to discriminate hybrid performance. a multi-trait selection indicated eight experimental hybrids with superior performance in this assay. the top one ('cnph 1346' x 'cnph 1272') had 40% and 58% higher paste yield production as compared to 'hypeel-108' and 'rpt1095', respectively. the groups of experimental hybrids with the inbred lines 'cnph 1299' or 'cnph 1346' as parental had the best performances in this assessment. these f1 hybrids could be recommended for commercial production in central brazil.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of acclimatization, frost intensity and soil water availability on damage caused by frost on wheat. the experiments were carried out in screen house conditions. the wheat plants were grown in pots. the acclimatization and frost incidence were simulated in a growth chamber. the abiotic factors evaluated were: acclimatization regimes (with and without); temperature gradient (2, -2, -4 and -7°c) and variation of soil water availability prior to frost incidence (9, 6, 3 and 1 day without irrigation). all factors were evaluated at tillering, stem elongation and heading stage on wheat cultivars br-18 terena, more tolerant to frost, and brs 194, less tolerant. the response variables were: degree of leaf scorching symptoms at 7 days after frost; total dry weight; and grain weight. the acclimatization, before frost, decreased the damage caused on wheat heading stage, which resulted in less leaf scorching symptoms and higher grain yield. temperature of -7°c, at heading stage, resulted in grain set failure in both cultivars; and frost damage was lower in plants with nine days without irrigation. prevailing conditions before frost influence frost damage.

Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of six water depths on the reproduction factor and gall index of meloidogyne incognita race 1 as well as yield of eight pea cultivars in cerrado conditions of the federal district, brazil. treatments were replicated four times in a completely randomized block design and combined eight pea cultivars (triofin, mikado, marina, vi?osa, maria, luiza, amélia and kodama) besides six water depths, 479, 395, 311, 239, 177 and 156 mm. there was no interaction between cultivars and water depths for the nematode reproduction factor and gall index, but there was for yield. the means for reproductive factor and gall index per cultivar in the six water depths did not differ, showing that the cultivars presented the same degree of susceptibility. however, the general means of the eight cultivars for each water depth showed that the reproductive factor reduced by 60% in water depths of 156 and 177 mm, indicating that the nematode did not tolerate water deficit. cultivar yield did not differ, considering water depths of 239 to 395 mm, but it reduced to 12, 30 and 40%, respectively, considering water depths of 479, 177 and 156 mm. pea cultivars reached the best yield under water depths of 239 to 395 mm.

Abstract: three culture media in combination with distinct accessions, crossing generations and periods of time after artificial pollination were evaluated in order to identify more efficient protocols to recover interspecific hybrids between lycopersicon esculentum and l. peruvianum. both type of media for seed plating and the interval time for fruit harvest after artificial pollination had significant influence on the recovery of interspecific hybrids. the hlh medium gave the best results. the interval between 25 and 35 days after the artificial pollination was found to be the ideal for recovering interspecific hybrids. for acclimation, the l. esculentum and l. peruvianum plants were evaluated as well as plants of the interspecific hybrids (f1) and those from the rc1 and rc2 generations. this process was affected by the size of the buds used in the seedling transfer before acclimation as well as by the accesses and the time period over which the plantlet was in the test tube. the hybrids presented a better acclimation ability. the ideal period ranged between 26 and 35 days after transferring the seedling to the test tube. the acclimation accomplished under mild environmental conditions improved the plantlet survival.

Abstract: Estudou-se diferentes protocolos de germina o e manuten o de híbridos interespecíficos (Lycopersicon esculentum X L. peruvianum) pela melhoria das condi es de cultura in vitro bem como da aclimata o das plantas germinadas. Quanto à regenera o dos embri es, três formula es de meios de cultura para resgate de embri o foram avaliadas, em combina o com distintos períodos de tempo. A recupera o de híbridos interespecíficos foi influenciada pelo meio de cultura utilizado para o plaqueamento das sementes e pelo intervalo entre a poliniza o artificial e o plaqueamento. O meio HLH proporcionou os melhores resultados. O intervalo entre 25 e 35 dias após a poliniza o foi determinado como sendo o período ideal para recupera o. Para aclimatiza o, foram avaliadas plantas de L. esculentum, L. peruvianum, híbridos interespecíficos (F1) e das gera es RC1 e RC2. O processo de aclimatiza o foi influenciado pelo tamanho das gemas utilizadas na repicagem anterior à aclimatiza o, pelos materiais genéticos utilizados e pelo tempo de manutenc o das plantulas em tubo de ensaio. A gerac o F1 apresentou a melhor capacidade de aclimatiza o. O período ideal para aclimatiza o variou entre 26 e 35 dias após a repicagem em tubo de ensaio. As aclimatiza es realizadas sob condi es ambientais amenas, alcan aram êxito total quanto à sobrevivência das plantulas.
Evaluación de la producción de 1,3-propanodiol por cepas nativas de Clostridium sp. mediante fermentación a partir de glicerol USP y glicerol industrial subproducto de la producción de biodiésel

Abstract: this work was aimed at evaluating 1,3 propanediol (1,3-pd) production from glycerol in thirteen clostridium sp. strains isolated from colombian soils. two culture media containing usp glycerol (g1a and g1b) and variable concentration of paba, biotin and mineral stock, and a third medium containing raw glycerol from biodiesel production were evaluated. volumetric productivity for 1,3-pd was determined in native strains in three media. in average native strains showed 1,6 greater volumetric productivity and a yield 128% higher when grown in g1b medium in comparison to those obtained in g1a medium. native ibun13a strain had 50% greater volumetric productivity (q1,3 pd= 0,060 mg ml-1 h-1) than the clostridium butyricum dsm523 reference strain (q1,3 pd= 0.030 mg ml-1 h-1) and the same parameter was increased by 28% in raw-glycerol medium (g2) regarding that obtained in g1 medium. these results suggest that raw glycerol obtained from the biodiesel process without any purification may be used for producing 1,3-pd at industrial level by optimising fermentation conditions. transforming this waste into an added-value product should become profitable the biodiesel production process in colombia.

Abstract: two different procedures for inoculation of hsv on corneas of balb/c mice were evaluated. the first was by the use of hsv suspensions directly on the corneas and the other was after corneal scarification. animals by this later method presented greater morbidity and mortality than those of first group, suggesting that inoculation of hsv without scarification of the cornea should be the method of choice for the study of hsv ophthalmic infection. this model showed also be an efficient experimental system to testing antiviral drugs.
Prevalence of Burnout among Professionals Who Care for Elderly and Chronically Ill Patients  [PDF]

Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of Burnout Syndrome among professionals who care for elderly and chronically ill patients and the relationship between the appearance of Burnout and sociodemographic and job related variables. The sample consisted of 265 employees who worked directly with the elderly and chronically ill. It was composed mostly of women, 94.3%. The average age was 43 (SD = 10.2). We made use of the following instruments: a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory—HSS (Semedo, 2009). The results show that 19.6% of participants have high rates of emotional exhaustion, 4.9% present high depersonalization, and 2.6% experience low personal accomplishment. Disease severity and support services influence personal accomplishment. Age proved to be a predictor of the emotional exhaustion variable, while the length of service at an institution variable not only proved to be a predictor of emotional exhaustion, but also of personal accomplishment. The prevention of Burnout Syndrome constitutes one of the major challenges for occupational health care providers to the elderly and chronically ill.
