Linear Programming for Optimum PID Controller Tuning  [PDF]
Edimar J. Oliveira, Leonardo M. Honorio, Alexandre H. Anzai, Tamara X. Soares
Applied Mathematics (AM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/am.2014.56084
Abstract:

This work presents a new methodology based on Linear Programming (LP) to tune Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control parameters. From a specification of a desired output time domain of the plant, a linear optimization system is proposed to adjust the PID controller leading the output signal to stable operation condition with minimum oscillations. The constraint set used in the optimization process is defined by using numerical integration approach. The generated optimization problem is convex and easily solved using an interior point algorithm. Results obtained using familiar plants from literature have shown that the proposed linear programming problem is very effective for tuning PID controllers.

Nature and Culture in the Rituals of San Antonio
Velasco Maíllo, Honorio M.
Revista de Dialectología y Tradiciones Populares , 2009,
Abstract: In this paper I analyze the cult of San Antonio Abad, San Antón, as an example of the ritual fusion of nature and culture in the different communities commemorating this Saint. The festive practices of this old Saint are associated to preChristian rites related to fire and the protection of animals. The cult to this Saint was very pread out in Europe, and was even exported to the American colonies. It is a clear example of how popular practices appropriate Church initiatives within their own logic, bordering heterodoxy at times, while expressing mechanisms of resistance to change. Yet it is clear that this cult has survived because it has adapted. When industrialization came to the countryside, the animal blessing gave way to machine blessing. When stockbreeding is on the wane, the cult adjusts to new ecological sensibilities and the blessings go to pets. St. Antonio unifies nature and culture, rural and urban, remote cults with ecology.
Lipschitz Parametrization of Probabilistic Graphical Models
Jean Honorio
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: We show that the log-likelihood of several probabilistic graphical models is Lipschitz continuous with respect to the lp-norm of the parameters. We discuss several implications of Lipschitz parametrization. We present an upper bound of the Kullback-Leibler divergence that allows understanding methods that penalize the lp-norm of differences of parameters as the minimization of that upper bound. The expected log-likelihood is lower bounded by the negative lp-norm, which allows understanding the generalization ability of probabilistic models. The exponential of the negative lp-norm is involved in the lower bound of the Bayes error rate, which shows that it is reasonable to use parameters as features in algorithms that rely on metric spaces (e.g. classification, dimensionality reduction, clustering). Our results do not rely on specific algorithms for learning the structure or parameters. We show preliminary results for activity recognition and temporal segmentation.
Convergence Rates of Biased Stochastic Optimization for Learning Sparse Ising Models
Jean Honorio
Computer Science , 2012,
Abstract: We study the convergence rate of stochastic optimization of exact (NP-hard) objectives, for which only biased estimates of the gradient are available. We motivate this problem in the context of learning the structure and parameters of Ising models. We first provide a convergence-rate analysis of deterministic errors for forward-backward splitting (FBS). We then extend our analysis to biased stochastic errors, by first characterizing a family of samplers and providing a high probability bound that allows understanding not only FBS, but also proximal gradient (PG) methods. We derive some interesting conclusions: FBS requires only a logarithmically increasing number of random samples in order to converge (although at a very low rate); the required number of random samples is the same for the deterministic and the biased stochastic setting for FBS and basic PG; accelerated PG is not guaranteed to converge in the biased stochastic setting.

Abstract: Corn's tocosh is a food consumed by children and adults in the andine region of Callejón de Huaylas in Peru, Germination and fermentation phenomena produced during its elaboration contribute to modify the chemical composition of the original corn; that is the case of the fatty acids in the lipidic fraction. The analytical data of the corn's tocosh, show the presence of trans isomers in non significant amount, an increase in linoleic acid related to the time of fermentation, and the presence of gamma linolenic acid.
Education Not for Money: An Economic Analysis on Education, Civic Engagement and Life Satisfaction  [PDF]
Leonardo Becchetti, Nazaria Solferino, M. Elisabetta Tessitore
Theoretical Economics Letters (TEL) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/tel.2016.61006
Abstract: Many recent theoretical and empirical findings both in Economics and in Psychology show that, in addition to the effects on policy outcomes, political participation may affect individual utility and increase happiness and well-being. In this paper we devise a theoretical model where the individual utility grows through the civic engagement, which may be enjoyed only with a sufficient level of investment in civic capital accumulated through education. We show that investing in education may have important consequences for subjective well-being by enhancing civic capacities which are relevant to improve individual’s civic engagement and social outcomes, even without any monetary effects. More specifically, we identify a form of non pecuniary benefits of education represented by the possibility of taking an active and successful part in social and civic life which significantly contribute to life satisfaction.
Estudio de los polinomios en contexto
Valdivé,Carmen?; Escobar,Honorio;
Paradígma , 2011,
Abstract: the research aims to describe how to build eighth graders, the concept of a polynomial. although the study is based on the cognitive theory of advanced mathematical thinking (amt), specifically in the elementary mathematics (calvo, 2001), there was need for teaching and epistemological analysis from other theoretical frameworks as socioepistemología, in the absence of a notion resignificar and recover the complexity of the objects studied (colin, martinez and farfán, 2006). methodologically this research lies in the qualitative paradigm, is descriptive, interpretative and exploratory. to compare and analyse information was analysed didactic, cognitive and epistemological consistent with the framework socioepistemológico. the findings may be summarized as follows: (a) the school used interchangeably discourse the notion of polynomial as a polynomial, polynomial function and expression in a polynomial algebraic (b) the historical study allowed an epistemological approach and the notion arose and evolved in every culture, observing the indiscriminate use of it, as does the school address and (c) the actors understand and assimilate the concept when they transit from arithmetic to algebra in different contexts, giving different meanings to the concept, thus securing a break from their practices algebra arithmetic.
Kume, Honorio;Piani, Guida;
Revista de Economia Política , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31572005000400004
Abstract: mercosur: the dilemma between the customs union and a free trade area. in 2001, the government of argentina - facing a major economic crisis - took a rather controversial decision and reduced the tariff rates of all capital goods to zero. this became a main source of conflict with brazil, the only country of mercosur that produces such goods. this paper discusses two possible scenarios for the resolution of this issue. in the first one, the countries would opt for the maintenance of the customs union. the authors present some suggestions for the rebuilding of the common external tariff (cet), by which the countries would take a middle course acceptable to all. the other possible outcome would be a step back in the direction of a free trade area, with no cet at all.
Palabras clave: Política petrolera, globalización neoliberal, Estado venezolano ___________________________ Abstract: This work explains the main elements of Chávez’s government oil policy in order to assert that around it a conflict between the advance toward neoliberal globalization and the validity of The Stated to defend the national interests occurred. While the transnational companies interests sought to subordinate the state-owned company (Petróleos de Venezuela - PDVSA), the Chávez’s government, doing to use of the state sovereignty, designed a policy in order to defend the state-owned company. To develop this idea, the paper was split into two parts, the first analyzes the main elements of the Venezuelan oil policy during the 20st century, emphasizing on certain governments from 40s through 90s. The second part deals with the modifications inserted by the Chávez’s government oil policy from 1999 and what these represent. KeyWords: Oil policy, neoliberal globalization, Venezuelan State
Causas e interpretaciones del Caracazo
José Honorio Martínez
Historia Actual Online , 2008,
