Rocha, Leonardo Andrade;Khan, Ahmad Saeed;Lima, Patrícia Ver?nica Pinheiro Sales;
Revista Brasileira de Economia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0034-71402010000100004
Abstract: the main objective of this paper is to verify the importance of institutional quality and human capital on the accumulation of wealth by nations, according to an extended solow's model. a variable capturing institutional quality increases the explanation power. despite the difficulty of measuring institutional quality, the experiment provides results which are consistent with the ones obtained by acemoglu et al. (2001) on the causality between economic growth and the quality of institutions, illustrating the importance of history in the growth process of a country.

The public health system management in Brazil has undergone a certain amount of restructuring over the past years. One consequence of the restructuring was the establishment of a new relationship between the Ministry of Health (MS) and the Ministry of Education (MEC) regarding the funding of University Hospitals of Federal Universities. Therefore, the Brazilian Ministry of Health has implemented the certification process of University Hospitals - a set of goals to be met concerning financial, management and education processes, as well as the assistance model to be adopted. This article presents the use of Multi Criteria Decision Analysis to support the development of a model aimed at assisting managers of a university hospital in assessing institutional performance, so that their goals jointly agreed between the MS/MEC can be met and certification is obtained. The case study was conducted within a hospital of the federal network of education in Brazil.

Jose Carlos Lynch, Leonardo Welling, Claudia Escosteguy, Alessandra G. L. Pereira, Ricardo Andrade, Celestino Pereira
Open Journal of Modern Neurosurgery (OJMN) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojmn.2012.21001
Abstract: Backgrond: To compare the survival of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients operated on at public hospital with that of patients operated on at the private hospital. Method: We carried out a retrospective analysis of the patients’ medical records, the surgical reports, and the pre and post-operative images of patients with a histopathological confirmed adult supratentorial glioblastoma multiform (GBM). Sixty-three patients were treated at public hospital and 21 at private hospitals. Results: The present study revealed that the survival of patients treated in private hospitals was statistically superior to that of patients treated in public hospitals (11.9 vs 7.7). Conclusions: Our study advances towards the confirmation of the hypothesis that socioeconomic and educational factors influence the KPS and the performance of RT treatment, with negative effects over the GBM patients’ survival.
Encoding through generalized polynomial codes
Shah, T.;Khan, A.;Andrade, A. A.;
Computational & Applied Mathematics , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1807-03022011000200006
Abstract: this paper introduces novel constructions of cyclic codes using semigroup rings instead of polynomial rings. these constructions are applied to define and investigate the bch, alternant, goppa, and srivastava codes. this makes it possible to improve several recent results due to andrade and palazzo [1].

Fractal : Revista de Psicologia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-02922012000200004
Abstract: contemporarily, typical job accidents are still being kept as an extremely relevant theme to society. the social welfare (inss), in 2007, registered 653,090 work accidents. owing to the statistics, several public offices have committed in facing the incidents characterized as typical work injuries (at). this research was originated from a dissertation which aimed to put in analysis the investigation practices in some public agencies in espírito santo state as the occurrence of typical work injuries, aiming to expand the questions concerning the binary guilt for the accident - sometimes due to the employer, sometimes due to the employee. in this article, we focus on the second chapter of the dissertation, for we used the tool-concept of biopower developed by michel foucault, to launch an analysis on biopower and the accident-control policies we conclude that subjectivation mechanisms are processed in a way to quell the importance of the trasversality of institutions in the formation of work accidents.

Silva, Carlos Leonardo Bahiense da;Melo, Victor Andrade de;
História, Ciências, Saúde-Manguinhos , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-59702011000200005
Abstract: the article discusses eduardo augusto pereira de abreu's estudos higiênicos sobre a educa??o física, intelectual e moral do soldado (hygienic studies on the physical, intellectual, and moral education of soldiers), published in 1867. marked by the experience of the paraguayan war, this was one of the first works that endeavored explicitly to conjoin medical and military concerns and to establish a clear link between molding a soldier and forming a citizen, both ready to defend the fatherland. placing heavy emphasis on the practice of physical activities tied in with civism, robustness, and good health, the book both anticipated and influenced subsequent debates in brazil on the importance of physical education.

Electrocatalysis in wastewater treatment: recent mechanism advances
Martínez-Huitle, Carlos A.;Andrade, Leonardo S.;
Química Nova , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422011000500021
Abstract: over 50 years, several scientists and industries have developed new alternatives for wastewater treatment and remediation. recently, electrochemical technology has been largely developed mainly because of its versatility and environmental compatibility. scientific contributions about role of the electrode material have allowed determining that the influence of material in the selectivity is an important parameter. however, to interpret this behavior, comprehensive physical chemistry models for organics destruction, related to electrochemical phenomena and material surfaces, were proposed in the last decades. so, this paper presents a critical and comprehensive review about the principles and recent mechanism advances in electrocatalysis for wastewater treatment.
Gest?o de risco e os impactos da instru??o normativa CVM no 550: análise empírica
Burlá, Leonardo Andrade de Almeida;Gon?alves, Edson Daniel Lopes;
Revista Contabilidade & Finan?as , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1519-70772010000200003
Abstract: the present study examines the effect of cvm normative instruction 550 on the use of derivatives and, consequently, on the risk management of brazilian companies. the instruction requires companies to disclose the fair value of derivative instruments in their quarterly financial statements. however, this resolution does not establish on the accounting treatment for these types of instruments. thus, it is supposed that the rule should affect both groups of derivatives users, hedgers (eh) and speculators (is). the empirical results show that the risk the companies incur basically refers to the interest rate and exchange rate. after the adoption of the instruction, statistical evidence was found that shows a decrease in derivative use for both groups. the evidence suggests that instruction 550 has encouraged companies to use derivatives contracts with more prudence, which may suggest a change in risk management behavior. for this study, a sample of 107 brazilian companies was used, belonging to 10 icb economic sectors, during a ten-year period (1999 to 2009).
