An Empirical Investigation of a New Measure to Assess Abrasive Personality Disorder Traits  [PDF]

Abstract: The psychometric properties of a new measure, the 33-item Abrasive Personality Traits scale, were investigated. College students (N = 84) completed the scale about someone they perceived as abrasive and an additional 75 college students completed it about someone who they did not consider abrasive. The scale had good internal reliability and acceptable test-retest reliability. Abrasive people were rated significantly higher on the scale than non-abrasive people (large effect size). The scale was also strongly and significantly correlated with the Narcissistic, Paranoid, Sadistic, Antisocial, and Passive-Aggressive personality disorders on the Coolidge Axis II Inventory. The results preliminarily demonstrate that abrasiveness may constitute a psychometrically reliable personality cluster, warranting further investigation.
Concurrent Validity of the Cognitive Assessment of Minnesota in Older Adults with and without Depressive Symptoms

Abstract: Cognitive impairment represents a common mental health problem in community-dwelling and institutionalized older adults, and the prevalence increases with age. Multidisciplinary teams are often asked to assess cognitive and functional impairment in this population. The Cognitive Assessment of Minnesota was created by occupational therapists for this purpose and is frequently used, but has not been extensively validated. This study examined the performance of the CAM and compared it to the MMSE with 113 outpatient clinic patients over the age of 60. Subgroups were established based on scores on a depression inventory to determine if the presence of depressed mood altered the relationship between the measures. Both measures demonstrated good internal consistency. The overall correlation between the two measures was high, statistically significant and remained high regardless of depression status. We offer recommendations about the utility of each measure in screening cognitive functioning for older adults. 1. Introduction Cognitive impairment represents a common mental health problem in community dwelling and institutionalized older adults, and the prevalence increases with age [1]. Several measures have been developed to assess cognitive functioning in this population with some measures having a greater emphasis on memory and language functioning in analog conditions and others focusing more on functional adaptive skill use. Occupational therapists often work within multi-disciplinary settings and are frequently asked to assess the functional and cognitive status of their patients. The Cognitive Assessment of Minnesota (CAM) [2] was created for this purpose. The CAM is a standardized assessment of cognitive functioning developed by occupational therapists. The advantage of using a measure like the CAM is that it covers a greater range of cognitive impairment compared to most cognitive screens, making it potentially more useful as a screening measure. In addition to providing a global measure of cognition, the CAM also assesses practical skill domains. For example, the CAM allows for assessments of working memory and simple mathematical ability (e.g., can the person make change) that would allow for specific recommendations (e.g., providing assistance to the affected person in managing finances). The CAM also allows for hierarchical grading of cognitive skills, which may be useful in monitoring change over time. Thus, the CAM may be a promising measure to be used in geriatric settings. Dominant Lethal Effects of Cyfluthrin and Malathion on Mice

Abstract: Male ICR strain mice were treated with three sublethal doses of malathion and cyfluthrin (Baythroid) through oral administration and intraperitoneal injection. One week after treatment, they were caged with two females and were allowed to mate. Seven days after the appearance of vaginal plugs, the females were dissected and observed for dominant lethality. Cyfluthrin came out as the more effective inducer of mutagenesis. The study found out that cyfluthrin was dose and route dependent but such results were not exhibited by malathion.

Stress-Induced Tradeoffs in a Free-Living Lizard across a Variable Landscape: Consequences for Individuals and Populations

Abstract: Current life history theory suggests that the allocation of energetic resources between competing physiological needs should be dictated by an individual’s longevity and pace of life. One key physiological pathway likely to contribute to the partitioning of resources is the vertebrate stress response. By increasing circulating glucocorticoids the stress response can exert a suite of physiological effects, such as altering immune function. We investigated the effects of stress physiology on individual immunity, reproduction and oxidative stress, across an urban landscape. We sampled populations in and around St. George, Utah, examining corticosterone in response to restraint stress, two innate immune measures, reproductive output, and the presence of both reactive oxygen metabolites and antioxidant binding capacity, in populations of common side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana) experiencing variable levels of environmental stress. Additionally, using capture-mark-recapture techniques, we examined the relationships between these physiological parameters and population-level differences. Our results reveal elevated physiological stress corresponds with suppressed immunity and increased oxidative stress. Interestingly, urban populations experiencing the most physiological stress also exhibited greater reproductive output and decreased survival relative to rural populations experiencing less physiological stress, demonstrating a tradeoff between reproduction and life maintenance processes. Our results suggest that environmental stress may augment life history strategy in this fast-paced species, and that shifts in life history strategy can in turn affect the population at large. Finally, the urban environment poses definite challenges for organisms, and while it appears that side-blotched lizards are adjusting physiologically, it is unknown what fitness costs these physiological adjustments accrue.
A Nd:YAG Laser-Pumped Hydrogen Raman Shifter with Capillary Waveguide

Abstract: Operation of a 355/532 nm Nd:YAG laser-pumped hydrogen Raman shifter with capillary waveguide (CWG) is demonstrated. For both pump wavelengths, more laser lines are generated using the Raman shifter with CWG compared to a conventional Raman shifter. Both 355 and 532 nm pumps showed a 60% decrease in threshold power for the generated first Stokes (S1) Laser line. The 355 nm-pumped Raman shifter with CWG generated S1 at 2.1 mW pump power at a hydrogen pressure of 1.38 MPa. On the other hand, for the 532 nm pumped waveguide Raman shifter at a hydrogen pressure of 1.72 MPa, the threshold power for S1 is at 8.3 mW. In addition, an improvement of the output powers is observed for the Stokes and anti-Stokes generated by Raman shifter with CWG.

Abstract: We study the behavior and report the control of the temporal coherence length zc of a 355/532 nm Nd:YAG pumped H2 Raman shifter with and without capillary waveguide (CWG). Depending on the application of the Raman-shifter light source, zc could be tuned rapidly or slowly by varying the H2 pressure P or the input power Pin. A more dynamic zc behavior is observed for a waveguide Raman shifter.

Abstract: Predictive models are often used for real-time decision making. However, typical machine learning techniques ignore feature evaluation cost, and focus solely on the accuracy of the machine learning models obtained utilizing all the features available. We develop algorithms and indexes to support cost-sensitive prediction, i.e., making decisions using machine learning models taking feature evaluation cost into account. Given an item and a online computation cost (i.e., time) budget, we present two approaches to return an appropriately chosen machine learning model that will run within the specified time on the given item. The first approach returns the optimal machine learning model, i.e., one with the highest accuracy, that runs within the specified time, but requires significant up-front precomputation time. The second approach returns a possibly sub- optimal machine learning model, but requires little up-front precomputation time. We study these two algorithms in detail and characterize the scenarios (using real and synthetic data) in which each performs well. Unlike prior work that focuses on a narrow domain or a specific algorithm, our techniques are very general: they apply to any cost-sensitive prediction scenario on any machine learning algorithm.
